I've searched, but I can't find it so:

1) How do I change a certain Civ's default "color"?

2) How can I change the default starting "name" whenever I launch a game? (it seems to be defaulting to my Computer's Name.

1) You would need a mod
2) Start CUSTOM GAME and in the Game Setup screen, click your name. Rename there.

1) Which mod exactly do I need? Is there a very simple one that isn't too obtrusive that will allow me to change colors?

2) Yes, I am able to change the name manually, however, is there a way to have a certain name of my designation be the "default" name? i.e. which file do I need to alter to change the game from using my default computer's name each time i start a new game.

for #2 there is a line in the ini file you can change.. dont remember what the line was.. but just look for the one with your computer name in it

sorry for being such a techno-idiot, but where exactly (i.e. which folder) is this ini file in? and ... what is an ini file? is there a specific place, name of the file i need to change?

Ini file is somewhere here (where user name is your user name and Civ4 is my custom install dir, for default it's probably Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civ...: C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\My Documents\My Games\Civ4

The file name is CivilizationIV.ini. Open it e.g. with Notepad.

The option in question is probably this:
; Game Name
GameName = civ4gotm08 adventurer

shouldn't i copy this into another folder before modifying?

it is safe to change it.. in worst case you can just delete it and a new one will be created with all the default options again
