Is anyone else experiencing the MP dropping players for no particular reason or freezing all the time? I am really pissed off at this. I paid $50 for the game and it is worse then a beta release!!! This is real crap!

I played all the Civs since they first started and this must be the worst I have ever seen. Whomever allowed the release of this without proper testing basically stole money from the people that bough it!

Just my .02 cents.

Just have a read of the forums here or at Civplayers or the 2K forums, or Steam Civ forums, MP shipping as a beta is not new news. And the next patch is not for MP, but AI and AI Diplomacy issues. Sometime after that they will address MP.

I have been playing MP with a friend and we think we have identified one reason for the disconnects.

During the normal builder phase of the game we rarely get any disconnects. Also during regular land-combat phase the DC-s are fairly rare. However we get almost regular disconnects when we fight any more complicated sea battles. We also witness lag often there.

We believe it might be due to issuing simultaneous bombard/move commands. One player is bombarding another players ship while that player is moving / promoting it. etc. It should be possible to work around this by issuing orders one unit at a time round-robin and not in a clickfest way. Annoying but doable.

tbh i think i never ever disconnected from a mp game
i just saw OTHERS doing it so im not sure its some civ issue instead of some net/pc of ppl disconnected

its surely not a issue of simultaneous bombard, i did that hundred times and it just doesnt bombard, end of story

the max bug i saw was the cursor stuck in "bombard state"

A few weeks ago, I posted here asking if people have gotten the same problem, I have a red cursor and I can't do anything. It's just bombardment lag. You can try to get rid of it by right click but it doesn't mean you can bombard. After 3 "successful" MP game and many more failures (where game did not finish), I more or less giving up on MP game as lag is too pervasive after a while. Bombardment issue is just one problem, my units sometimes chases a shadow, a phantom, where I click to initiate combat, just to watch enemy unit is in a different tile when my unit arrives. It's very frustrating.

Does anyone know how this works exactly? For example, if I'm in a 1-vs-1 game and the opponent gets replaced by an AI player, would I know the difference between the opponent being the one who dropped vs. me being the guy who dropped? Do we simply each get our own version of the game running where the other player has been replaced by an AI?

In a duel there is no real way to know who dropped from who, this was no different in Civ4 either. That is why it is also handy to use Civplayers chat, as you can go back and page the other player and hope he noticed too that he is playing an AI :-/

This is probably the biggest issue in multiplayer for me. My bro and I have tried restarting different games but we always eventually get unavoidable disconnects. The most annoying thing is that the alert that a player has disconnected is just a subtle notice on the side hidden with all of the other messages. And the game just keeps playing as normal for both of you, except AI have taken the place of the human opponent. The first time it happened, we didn't even realize it until we started playing again the next day and my brother said it wasn't the right game and everything was wrong, and I told him he's crazy. But it turns out, we both had been playing against AI the whole time instead of each other.

I agree there should be a bigger notification... but of course you can always look in the top right players bar and see if your names are still there. :)

There should also be a reconnect feature that if you *do* drop, the game pauses briefly or at least tries to help you get back in. You can always right click on a steam friend and rejoin... but if you are not playing with steam friends then sorry, you're toast. It would be nice if when you restart it says something like 'join last game in session yes/no'.
