This time I took inspiration from movie Waterworld and made as water covered map as I could. Randomizer gave me Portugal. Let's see... Carrack! That is about the perfect unit for this map! Good start! Then I had to ponder a bit with the settler: north on corn for immediate food boost, east across the river on silk for immediate commerce, or in place along the river without any other immediate benefits. So I chose starting location and that revealed crabs up north just outside the BFC! Meh!

"I bring you good news, lord Joao" said Taoist priest. "Taoist missionaries have spread teachings of our religion to several cities. Their work has helped to calm down restlessness and more of our people are working. Our brothers and sisters in monasteries make significant contributions to scientific research, and people flock to our temples to hear and learn the Taoist ideals. With our work, cities and citizens of Portugal are happier and more productive than ever before. However, there is much to improve. I ask you, my lord, to guide our research to further improve our religion for betterment of our people and realm."
Despot Joao considered priest's words carefully while rubbing beard on his chin. "I hear and understand you. However, our land has gotten small and there are only tiny islands within vicinity hardly worth of new cities. We must focus our efforts to means of finding new lands and getting there. I deem that to be in best interest of our realm and the people."
Priest bowed deeply. "I understand, lord. We shall proceed according your will."

Becouse my first city doesn't have any water resources nearby, I researched farming first so I could farm the corn. Then was bronze working so I could chop down surrounding trees and build some cottages to fund research and expansion. After researching what is needed for cottages, I went to iron working so I could chop off surrounding jungles and build new cities in jungle tiles. Shortly before iron working's completion, I realized I could have made cities on jungle tiles without it! :wallbash:

In order to secure religion, I had to beeline for Confucianism. Somebody else got it first anyway, so I had to go for Taoism and got it secured. Next goal was getting carrack. After that, hereditary rule. Along the way I founded city on 1 tile island in the west. Nearby crabs provide growth and otherwise city can contribute commerce from water tiles. I had my first fight with carrack against pirate galley just outside of my shore waters. Then I discovered Incas just south of my island.

Subberoni!

King Joao studied the newest maps carefully. His people, the Portuguese, were the first to prove shape of the world. While doing so, they had discovered many islands and many empires. Along the way, trade was made which had brought both knowledge and gold to the Portugal.
"How do we compare to others?" asked king.
Science advisor was first to respond. "We are among the most advanced. Our carracks are more advanced than other deep ocean faring ships. Many empires still rely on galleys which can hardly leave vicinity of the shore. That said, some empires have great many of them. In addition one of our carracks had spotted more advanced ship, of Russian empire if my memory serves. They call it galleon. It is very large ship with sizeable cargo capacity."
He was followed by general. "Reports about ground forces are more encouraging. No other empire has any better equipped ground troops than what we are fielding right now. In fact, I expect we can train better equipped foot soldiers than any other empire in the world. And we should do so, for our army is among the smallest, if not the smallest."
Financial advisor was next to speak. "Our wealth isn't the best either. In fact, we could be below average. We get good amount of tax and other revenues from the towns we have, but we need more of them. We can build four more towns around the Lisbon, and I recommend we do so. In addition all cities should build marketplace and harbor to maximize revenues. That being said, becouse our army is smallest, I expect we spend least amount of money to its upkeep and therefore we can direct more money and effort to technological research. In my opinion, we should hold on to it, and increase our army only when we are attacked."
So advisors and officers read out their reports. When they were done, king sat silent and looked once more at the maps. Everyone looked at him expectantly. At last he spoke. "If we have any advantage over others, it could be our science. We need to keep that advantage by any means necessary. We should focus our efforts first to find better ways to research the science, and second to research for better and stronger military equipment to defend our lands. Those are our advantages, and we will hold on to them by any cost."

I haven't got any wonders made. I tried some, but others got them first. I've made cities on small, 1-2 tile islands to work on water tiles to get commerce. One island closest to the main land has 2 land tiles with sugar to work on. One sugar has plantation, another has cottage. One little island has crab and fish tiles within its work area, but it's gonna take time to build work boats for them (gotta use citizens and whip to get anything done). Gonna build lighthouse and harbor on every little island city. When those have population close to max happiness (5 or so), I'll have some specialists (merchants maybe). Otherwise I'm beelining for representation which gives +3 research for every specialist. Then beeline for ship of the line and destroyer. Maybe some other techs along the way. Gonna aim for the space race again.

Today I had longer work day and yesterday I watched a movie (Fury) from DVD. So for today I show you close up on my main island. Outside of the screen to the west are 3 more island cities and a Settler is on his way on a carrack to make yet another one. Even right now highest city maintenance is -6.45. Should I use citizens to build courthouses to halve it, or should I keep them working the water tiles for commerce? Happiness limit is going to get in the way anyway and building temples and colosseums will take tens of turns even with 2 citizens for 3 production. One island has 2 water food resources to work on, so that one can have more citizens without starving, and another city on a 2 tile island has grassland hill with a mine on it for 4 production, so those cities have some means for development. But the others...

I'd like to have explanation about following items on INFO SCREEN:
Soldiers
Population
Approval Rate
Life Expectancy
Exports - Imports

What does each item mean, what does numbers mean, and how can I change the numbers?

Suryavarman of Khmer declared war against me and came with a fleet to raid my coastal cities (don't have inland cities anyway). I was totally illprepared for war. Those cities that were not immediately under threat had to be stripped from all military units in order to reinforce other cities. Khmer fleet skirted around the coast, then attacked and captured one city in the west. I got 1 back right away (garrisoned just by 1 knight). On second city at the south, siege ensued. We both had knights and some melee units, but he had catapults and trebuchets. Collateral damage was too much and city fell in some turns. I had to build reinforcements before I could get city back. But THEN I got rifling researched, I zeroed research, upgraded all my footsloggers to riflemen, and kicked ass! But before that, apparently he got researched military science, upgraded couple of his caravels to frigates and now those frigates roam around my islands, wreck fishing boats, and bomb city defenses. Then Alexander demanded world map from me! I really cannot afford another war, so I gave in under threat, but at least that improved relations to friendly.

In addition of Khmer, Inca declared war against me. Like that isn't pain enough, other civs demand tributes and cancellations of deals with their enemies. When I refused, they stopped trading with me. Frakkin' Hell! Never mind about that. Free religion improved relations all around and England even restored open borders. My riflemen have shot all invasive ground parties within 2 turns. As soon as I got military science researched, I started building ships of the line and those have steadily mopped off enemy frigates in my waters. I'm considering to invade Incas becouse they're closer and aren't as advanced as Khmer. I offered peace for both of them and Incas agreed to it, so never mind... I'm not the most advanced either, but I own military front with riflemen, ships of the line, and ironclads.

Trade with Ottomans got me scientific method which revealed oil in water tile at edge of my border. Gonna build some ironclads to guard my waters while I send ships of the line around to wreack havoc against my enemies (Khmer at the moment). Never mind, he's already got DESTROYERS! It's all thanks to their land based oil supply while most others, including I, have it available only on water tiles! Frak! I have to give up on sea battles and focus on defending my main island. Workers are hard at work building railroads that will allow me to move footsloggers all across the island. When I upgrade my riflemen to infantry, even Khmer can't take my island. Damn stalemate... Still could restart war against Incas, capture their cities, and get more tax to fund research. But can perform effective war on two fronts? Likely not.

Then Sitting Bull demands tribute, and when I rejected it, he declared war. Guess what? His primitive army was no match for my ONE rifleman defending the city! But becouse America is on other side of the world, I'm not going to spend turns for counter invasion.

Greek declares war, Khmer brings tank and marines against my capital, and Russia has completed Apollo Program. If I had gone offensive against Khmer before they got destroyers, I might have stood a chance, but now it looks pretty much game over for me.
