Croatia has signed a treaty to make it the 28th member of the European Union from mid-2013, becoming the EU's second ex-Yugoslav member after Slovenia.

EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy welcomed the "historic" treaty signed at the EU summit in Brussels after seven years of tortuous negotiations.

Montenegro and Serbia are likely to be accepted next year.

Meanwhile the UK is distancing itself from the EU.

From BBC

PM David Cameron has effectively vetoed an EU-wide treaty change to tackle the eurozone crisis, saying it was not in the UK's interests.

Instead a new "accord" setting out tougher budget rules will be drawn up for the eurozone, which all EU states, except the UK, look set to join.

Should the EU be expanding whilst the euro could still collapse? Why do some countries want to join whilst, some sections of others want to leave?

I think that ultimately the UK does not seem to want to be part of a country of Europe. But i am not sure if the rest want that either.
By country i mean having common budget, army etc, not the farce we now have.
But i don't know how realistic having a common country like that is.

Good thing the Tories are trying to create more jobs in the UK (though this means UKers will have less chance of getting any of them)!

As a EU UK and Irish citizen I would like the EU to be more like a country than a group.

The Condem government has started to move the UK away from the EU which will be bad for the UK. It could also lead to the Condem government breaking up depending how things play out.

Good news!

I'm a bit skeptical though.. I mean.. The EU has let in shady countries in before, like Greece. Are we sure that Croatians pay their taxes and that their economic system is not a total farce?

The mistake was not lettign Greece join the EU, the mistake was having them join the Euro.
I'm not sure if Croatia is ready to become a EU member. My skepticism is more due to political than economic reasons. The country is comically nationalistic by european standards, but it's fortunately too small to blockade and sabotage the Union, unlike the UK. Cameron really should have given the people their EU referendum. Either be part of the Union, or don't.

I wonder which EU will they join :twitch:

(And really, nobody started a thread about the latest summit yet? This forum is really degenerating.)

I was wondering that, too. But shouldn't you be delighted by results?

In EU noone can hear you scream!!!

Get out - run away!!!

Hi, welcome on board! You're in for a rough ride though.

Why? So because of the English they had to go outside the EU framework, which is bad, but even then they didn't use the opportunity to come up with something really serious and profound. It's more of the same crap we've been seeing in the previous months.

Would it be offensive if I said that England needs to be kicked out of the EU and bashed with a stick until it sinks into the North Sea?

I think we were all waiting for you to start one.
I was.:)

No, do it yourself. I am too angry to write even a moderately neutral OP.

What's there to be angry about ?
No one expected the UK to contribute anything useful anyway. Or are you pissed because Czechia isn't part of the new not treaty ?
I think it doesn't really matter if four non-Eurozone countries aren't on board, after all the point is to stabilize the Euro.

There is a few of the EU politicians who have some common sense tho...

Nigel Farage is one of them:http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ULns-cSUeVs

Yeah, the kind of common sense you hear at the pub. Spoken like a real statesman.

Hehe.. yeah well we need more politicians like him. More politicians that are not living in their own secluded elitist world totally out of touch with their populations!
