Crusader Kings 2

yeah but im gonna give up on that game. The hansa has risen, and i cant build or seize any trade posts anymore, and it has completly ed up my trade zone by building in the middle of it. Playing republic is fairly boring (unless venice/pisa is more intresting), you wait a lot untill the patrician dies and you gather money. Seizing cities is also not happening much cause they are always under control of big realms (england, hre,...), which are to far too reach and the upkeep for your ships kills you.

Tried starting as venice in 1241 to get the 80 trade posts achievement as recommended on the wikia, but starting as venice is impossible after that date. It says "not allowed to play republics", although you can play as genoa and the hansa etc...

Genoa seems like it'd be more interesting because you are de jure HRE and they want to shank you. Venice is like Hansa except people will fight you for your colonies. Your republic has to be indie for it to be a challenge, really.

If you like the Elder Scrolls, try Elder Kings. Lots of republics that have to fight for their survival.

yeah probably it will be more fun with competition around and some rivals. As gotland, your de jure duke tries to conquer you at the start, but since the AI cant handle naval invasions, its quite pittyfull. But even then, i expected some more inside rivalries (there was some unsuccesfull plotting). It wasnt fun to have 4 times more trade posts as the other families. And if you're not the doge, high enough diplomacy or stewardship is enough to reject any request to hand over trade posts.

Gonna go restore roman empire for next game

You could try a Muslim merchant republic. TP cap is based off of how many adult men are in court, but so is decadence.

I got around to playing CKII last month, and it's a lot of fun! I played as Pfalz, starting in 1066. My first count tried to gain control of Lower Lorraine, but failed. His lord was merciful, and thereafter he was a loyal vassal. The second count, however, was able to become Duke of Lower Lorraine. From there I had a nice base in the HRE for decades - not particularly powerful, but interesting enough.

A couple generations down the line, around 1150, everything started going really well. My ruler married the Duchess of Savoy, and thus his son inherited Savoy. The son was a great duke, and made his most controversial decision around 1200 - converting to Lollard at the advice of one of his bishops. This looked like a terrible idea at first. But then an interesting turn of events happened. My duke arranged a marriage between a close relative and one of the claimants to the Empire, and she converted to Lollard. Around the same time, the Emperor died. In the resulting upheaval, the faction supporting her claim to the throne won, and the Empire became Lollard! Although the new Kaisirin would die by the blade in about a year, her son would rule long enough to begin a decades-long conversion of most of the Empire to Lollard.

My next Duke of Savoy was Catholic, unlike his father. At first this was good, but by 1225 it was increasingly a liability, and he eventually converted to Lollard. However, he was a poor ruler, lost the Duchy of Lower Lorraine, and generally saw a decrease in the family's fortune.

But then I had another great duke. Over the decades, he'd reclaim Lower Lorraine, expand slowly, and eventually become King of Lotharingia! All was honey and roses! Except that the Emperor hated him for proclaiming himself a king. Revokation of titles and eventually imprisonment followed. Thus the lesson of being too fast of a rising star was learned.

Fast forward a bit, and one of my rulers would find that in another war for the Emperorship, a faction was advocating him as Emperor! So he joined, and succeeded without too much difficulty over an Empire weakened by previous claimants. Thus began my era of greatest prosperity. At first, however, it was difficult. I was forced to concede an Elective Monarchy, rather than Gavelkind, at the Empire level. But for decades, I would expand the Empire, re-claiming northern Italy and claiming the better part of France as well. Fueled by both a small feudal tax and all the bishops paying taxes to their lords, not the Pope, the Empire was healthy like rarely before. My Emperor would live to the ripe old age of 85 before being succeeded by his eldest daughter, winner of the election. The game had actually been becoming almost boring for the last 5 - 10 years - even an alliance of Pisa, France, Castille, and the Danish-English-Norwegian union couldn't stop the Holy Roman Empire.

The new Kaisirin would only rule a couple years before dying a natural death, and that was not enough time to secure the Empire for her successors. One son became King of Burgundy (due to Gavelkind), and the one I played ruled the Kingdom of Italy (an Elective Monarchy). As the new king, I joined the Independence faction, which surprisingly was granted freedom with just myself and two duchies as members (one of which was quickly absorbed by Poland). I didn't really expect this, but it's been okay, and less steamroller-y. So far I've expanded south against Pisa. With fewer levies, I've had to hire lots of mercenaries - at one point I had nearly 60,000 mercenaries in the field at once to fight Pisa (who had tens of thousands of their own mercenaries), France, and Castille at the same time. Thank goodness for the huge war chest I'd built up while I was Emperor!

My current goals are:

- Secure the Kingdom for my heirs. I plan to leave Italy as an Elective Monarchy as long as I don't start losing the current election, but eventually I plan to go to Primogeniture. Ultimogeniture if the situation won't allow Primogeniture, but we'll see.
- Gain more of the Italian peninsula from Pisa.
- Perhaps train an heir with Italian culture, go across to Africa, destroy Carthage!

I do have a claim on the Empire, but I'm not sure I want it. It would almost be too easy again if I got it. That is, if I could keep the Empire, which is far from a sure thing.

One of the Muslim caliphates, currently ruled by the Hishimid dynasty, has been very successful, currently ruling most of Arabia, northeast Africa, Anatolia, and a good chunk of Greece as well, plus Catalonia and a few provinces in southern Italy. The Ilkhanate is also doing very well, having recently reclaimed Hungary after a previous Crusade had retaken it for the west. My successful efforts to convert the HRE to Lollard have certainly contributed to the sorry state of affairs for the Catholic world. Oh well.

thats the fun of ironman mode now for me, working out your situation without reloading or even the cheat console. and then you sometimes get setbacks where you cn plot revenge. As scandinavia i lost all my titles except the highest one, yet i managed to take back everything on a non-tyranicall way.

Started as byzantium now in 867. doing a cycle of pressing de jure claims, making peace, pressing claims somewhere else, and press claims again when truce is over. did only one holy war, for sicily when there was infighting. also married my heir to the heir of bulgaria. even won a tournament. only problem is iconoclast heresy becoming more apparent. ill probably need to capture Antioch to pump up the moral authority

Also had the hellpit event in another playthrough. Question though, what side effects does mending the great schism?

That's an actual modifier? Well color me murderous.

No, it isn't a modifier, but the Emperor went from basically ignoring me to be outright hostile after that, and I don't think it was a coincidence. Whether actually becoming a king was why, or that it significantly increased my power (de jure, at least) relative to his, I'm not sure. But the Emperor definitely seemed intent on making sure I was no longer a factor in imperial politics after that, and he pretty much succeeded (though my successors would be able to change that with time).

Gonna restart my byzantine 867 game. I spend more time fighting pretender wars than actually reclaiming territory (about that, how do you easily get parts of northern italy?). And when you end one, another starts. If it wasnt for two very lucky assassinations it would be game over way sooner. Might switch to elective on the next try

Kill Karlings. It will upset their realms and when Italy inevitably busts apart, you can quickly swoop in and take a couple pieces trying to become independent or force their liege to do something. Retinues + mercs are great for this since you can literally declare war a day before your armies arrive at the province.

Yes do that. Too many times I have seen a Catholic Karling to upsurp Byzantine throne and mending Great Schism.

when you restore the roman empire, oes the succesion law resets to gavelkind/primogeniture and you need to wait ten years? Cause im running elective and my ruler is already quite old

The drama in this game....
When my Empress of Scandinavia became a ruler in a young age, there really were no Norse characters of sufficiently high prestige and standing to marry her. Yet, she desperately needed a husband to help holding the realm together. So she married an old, possessed uncle with so-so stats.

After some time passed, she noticed a young, genius cousin had became a ruler of a vassal duchy and a plot to rid herself of her husband was started. The plot succeeded without a hitch... but days before my ruler got pregnant!

Undeterred, she set about to rid herself of the current wife of her prospective new husband.
At the very next day after the second plot succeeds, my character dies giving birth to twin boys. Cue mayhem, split of family lands and civil war.

:goodjob:

Got a some sort joan of arc event and had a maid with 54 martial that can lead armies.

My roman empire mission failed however when my ruler died at 42 and didnt have a son, so i had nobody reasonable to put for my elective succesion. Only had an ugly daughter of 4 who didnt even inherit a strong claim....

Announcement of new CK2 DLC. Called Rajas of India. Features 300 new provinces, map extended to India, three new religions.

That's not a very snappy name. I wonder it'll be compatible with both 867 and 1066.

I just hope that this means they have worked out the issues with sea zones in the Indian Ocean.
