I would really like to see crusades play a more meaningful part in DoC. Just throwing that out there :)

Ok, I’ll bite.

What exactly do you mean? I thought the Apostolic Palace allows you to declare wars against unbelievers alongside your co-religionists?

Are you looking for some sort of quest?

I'm having trouble putting my thoughts about it into words.
At the very least I would like to actually see them happen. In my experience AP crusades are very rare.
Alternatively, revamping the whole thing to something like how CK2 handles it would be cool IMO, but probably too much to ask for.

In RFC Europe crusades are prominently implemented. How do you like that interpretation? And what parts would you like to adjust to implement them in RFC DoC?

As a Catholic Pope any Civ has an opportunity to call for a crusade. Unfortunately AI is very inept in this. And when human player is the Pope -- AI never supports. Perhaps Leoreth could tweak some modifiers and make Apostolic Council Civs more supportive of Pope? Or make it impossible to defy resolutions? The only thing Apostolics can agree on is to collect tithe.

In my Byzantine game, the Germans spawned in at war with the Arabs. I gave them open borders, and they began moving a large force through my empire towards the middle east (deus vult). Sadly, they got intercepted by a band of barbarian horse archers, and afterwards, their force got distracted by the minor cities in Italy. So I think the Germans might be scripted to kinda pursue the crusades, but implementation is iffy.

I agree with the sentiment though. It would be cool to see the apostolic palace crusades as being a useful tool to wield as the Germans. :)

I can't stand playing Civ 4 without the BUG module anymore, so my experience with RFC:Europe is minimal. How do they handle crusades?

The shortest and best way to find that out is play (only) two games of RFC:Europe. One as the Arabs and one as an early catholic civ (I suggest the Venetians).

The crusades get influenced by the quality of your religion, the quantity of your religion (both both within as well as outside of your civilization) and as a catholic player the amount of cash you've acquired.

They are very central to the gameplay in that mod (eg. you can choose to send units you've built on a crusade, or alternatively keep them around for your private wars. Either choice brings along consequences though...)

Personally I think copying that system outright would change the current gameplay of RFC: DoC a lot. So for diversion sake I would argue against it. Still, some of the results you are looking for might be in there.

A (locally) famous dutch author (Multatuli/Eduard Douwes Dekker, 1820-1887) wrote in his amply named work Ideas:

"A pearl diver does not fear the mud."

I saw bands of Germans or even Poles going to Syria through Eastern Roman Empire pretty often.
True, I often see those. But there is never an AP crusade, or support of other catholic civs in that direction.

Totally.

How about making the Crusades an 'event' in the same way there is one for when Greece, Rome, Mongolia (and in the older version the Seljuks) suddenly spawned armies to conquer the middle east.

Make it so that the Holy Roman empire is given suitable units to capture both Damascus and Jerusalem. The wonder Krek de Chevaliers can be constructed in Damascus, and Jerusalem can be held until at least 1200 so that it counts towards the HVC, before the Mongols and Mamluks arrive.
