CS-1 - Farmer's Paradise

Inherited Turn - Look around and it looks good. I'm going to try to settle the last spot in the southwest and move forces towards the Arabian border. I want to see if we can see what the defenses of a second Arabian city look like. We could pretty easily take Bagdhad right now.

Turn 1 - Moving troops towards Bagdhad. Novgorod finishes a theatre, I guess for more cultural pressure. I start it on an explorer to scope out Arabia. I'll ask for open borders when it finishes, hopefully Saladin will give them. Yekat finishes a forge, starts on a library. Yakutsk starts on a lighthouse after finishing a granary.

Turn 2 - We get a prophet in St. Pete. We can discover theology, become a super specialist or save him for a GA. I'm going to save him for now. Moscow starts a settler to fill in the last space. The Colossus is still available, so I figure I'll give it a try in St. Pete. It's only 8 turns.

Turn 4 - Moscow finishes it's Settler, and I'm at a loss on what to build. I guess a theatre, but only for the purposes of being to use artist specialists. We are unfortunately going to have to cut some trees here to irrigate Vladivostok. I think it goes against the variant to wait until Biology to farm it.

Turn 5 - Optics comes in. We'll finally be able to meet some other civs, as well as go for circumnavigation. Ok, Saladin won't give us open borders, so I'll see what I can see from outside. I start research on paper. I start 3 workers. Hopefully we'll be better off on them by the end of my turnset.

Turn 6 - I change research to monarchy on the way to banking after realizing how poor our finances are at the moment. We get a great merchant in Moscow. I decide to use him for a golden age, as Saladin won't give us open borders and we don'tknow when we'll find anyone else. It boosts our science by 20%!

Turn 8 - We meet Huayna Capac. He's 200 points up on us in score. I trade philosophy for fuedalism and ivory for deer. We discover monarchy and start on guilds. Here's our stack by bagdhad. We'll still have to wait on it. I think it'd be a blood bath for us to take the city, even with 3 to 1 numbers.
untitled15dl.jpg

Turn 9 - Why does the AI never proritize this wonder? I think it's a pretty good one.
colossus6nx.jpg

I've got 3 caravels in production, though Capac has already found us so he has a jump on circumnavigation. That should be a goal for the next few turnsets, until it falls, whether to us or an AI.

So I think we are in an ok position, but we can't take Saladin on with the finances we have. I should have built more markets during my turns. Here's our boosted demographics. The lack of cottages obviously hurts, as we are last in GNP even during a golden age! Check out the crop yield though. Somehow even with all of our farms someone is ahead of us.
demo7qk.jpg

Good luck Snaproll.

Inherit turn, and things look pretty good, but I want to try something. We have the colossus now but we are working hardly any water tiles, which produce 4gpt under the golden age!!! So, I run a little experiment. By firing specialists and working the water tiles in our coastal towns, I change our finances from this:

01_before.JPG

to this:

02_after.JPG

Quite an improvement! Of course, what it doesn't show is our decreased GPP rate and ostensibly slightly decreased production rate due to the firing of priests and engineers. Are the extra beakers worth it? Debateable. Also, the equation will change we we leave the golden age, so I'll take another look then. I micromanage some cities but everything looks ok. All cities are building infrastructure right now, which is fine, bit if we want to take on saladin we need more catapults.

Turn 1 - Start a Market in St. Petersburg - right now it is by far our best gold producer with all of its coast tiles being worked.

Turn 2 - Meet Hatsepshut - She is WAY behind! Wow, suprisingly behind, actually. She doesn't know either of the other civs yet, so I go ahead and sign open borders with her. Novograd finishes barracks, starts catapult

03_hatty.JPG

Turn 3 - Guilds comes in. Moscow finishes courthouse, starts hanging gardens, due in only 5 turns. Banking due in 4 turns (I'll stick with the queued research).

Turn 4 - Islam FIDAL, and Saladin adopts Bureaucracy. Our golden age ends, and income just plummets. I have to go down to 40% research, just to stay even! Man, it sure is strange not having any cottages. Banking still due in 4.

Turn 5 - We meet Louis, and he's doing well, ahead of Saladin, but still quite a ways behind us.

04_louis.JPG

Turnw 6-7 - Quiet turns. Still focusing strongly on infrastructure, but we now should have enough catapults to start a war on Saladin. I don't think it's the right move since we are already at 40% science, but the option is there.

Turn 8 - Banking comes in and I immediately revolt to mercantilism. Representation + Mercantilism + Pacifism + lots of specialists = fun! Hauyana Capac is the first to circumnaviate though, unfortunately for us. We meet Mao Zedong, and he's doing well also.

06_mao.JPG

Turn 9 - We come out of anarchy with another specialist in every city, and I start research on Paper because none of the badguys have it yet and it only takes three turns to research. We meet Ceasar, and he's hopelessly backward, second only to Hatty. Things are really looking up - we've met almost everyone I think and we are still sitting strong in second place! We are down to 30% research now. Remember, this number is deceiving. With no cottages, all of our gold pretty much goes to cover expenses. Most of our research is being done by specialists.

07_julius.JPG

Turn 10 - We complete the hanging gardens in Moscow. I start Angor Wat. After that I think we should put the National Epic there. I've queued it, but please feel free to change it.

08_garden.JPG

Sorry about the sparcity of notes. We are doing just fine, allthough the low research rate makes it feel otherwise.

The Save

I like how you illustrated how our finances versus research are working. It's really amazing what this no cottage strategy is doing, though we should be swimming in GP soon enough. I think we might have to just try to stay out of war for now, as our economy certainly can't handle it. We will just have to stay up on the troops, as last I looked Saladin was pretty far ahead of us in power. We wouldn't want him to get any ideas. :(

Roster:
chriseay - swapped with snaproll
Beestar - up now
Morred
Woebearer
Sina
Snaproll - just played

Turn0 (1450AD)

Trying to specialize cities and create some more production cities; hope this matches what everyone else had in mind:
- Yaroslav'l for hammers / military production
- Rostov for hammers / military production (Heroic Epic)
- St. Petersburg for gold (holy city)
- Novgorod for science by specialists
- Moscow as monster everything-producing city

Diplomacy
- Rome/Egypt are a a Jewish alliance.
- Incas/Arabs are friends, which could be tricky because Incas are the most powerful yet Saladin will be the next to be conquered.
- Traded some resources to Mao. We don't really need happiness resources in return, so I asked for gpt instead (6).
- I noticed that Louis had a pile of gold so I sold him Music to get it. This should build up some cash for upgrades / deficit research spending. In retrospect, maybe I should have traded him a map for the cash instead.

Turn1 (1460AD)

- Got Paper, next research is Education for the path to Liberalism and Economics. 11 turns at our existing research rate. Slight deficit of -14 gpt. Didn't trade for maps yet because the AIs don't have much to offer in return, and we don't need that knowledge immediately.

Turn2 (1470AD)
- Louis came looking for open borders, declined
- Novgorod popped a Great Artist, probably its last before Moscow pulls ahead for good. We can get ~1000 beakers toward Divine Right, create a Great work, or create a super specialist (3 beakers from Rep, 3 commerce, 12 culture). We hold onto him to create a Great Work during future wars.
- Renegotiated deals with Huayna: existing deal was our ivory for his deer, and renegotiated ivory for deer+10 gpt! Clearly some resources are valued higher than others.

Turn3 (1480AD)
- Declined open borders with Julius Caesar because no value to us (in retrospect was a mistake, would have improved relations).
- Started building our first knight in Yaroslav'l

Turn 4 (1490AD)
- Declined Mao's offer of his wine for our ivory. We don't need happiness, and our relations with him already are at +4 for good trading.
- Raised spending to 60% science, -15/turn deficit, 233 gold left
- Huayna Capac and Mao both have knights

Turn 5 (1500AD)

Turn 6 (1505AD)
- We are alone with Saladin on this continent. If we can conquer the continent, we'll be unassailable until everyone else gets Astronomy
- Zhang Heng, the Great Engineer, is born in Moscow. He can research Engineering, but instead I chose to switch Moscow to producing Notre Dame (550 hammers), hurried it with Zhang Heng, and then plan to switch back to Angkor Wat (250 hammers left to go). This will give us the happiness bonus, which should be useful for our high-population strategy, and also more GP production in Moscow. It seemed a waste to spend the Engineer on only 250 hammers to finish Angkor Wat ...
farmer's-1505ADb.jpg

Turn 7 (1510AD)
- Courthouses finish in Yakutsk, Smolensk. City maintenance has dropped from 47 to 39 and our 60% research now nets us 243 beakers per turn.
- Somehow we just got a giant pile of cash. Courthouses should just decrease burn rate, not award us gold. Nuts - just realized why: China beat us to Angkor Wat (we still had six turns to go). Raised research rate to 80% with the cash from Angkor Wat.
- Louis lacks Code of Laws - traded it to him for cash and his map, which showed us the Eastern Continent he shares with Rome and Egypt. Our map is now good enough that Mao will give us his world map + 40 gold for it. This gives us the details of the big Southern Continent (China and Inca). Traded map to Saladin to take his 140 gold. Is the AI smart enough to use the information on the world map in war?
farmer's-1510ADmap.jpg
- Upgraded several Axemen to Macemen

Turn 8 (1515 AD)
- We are neck-and-neck with the Incas for score lead. In terms of power, we are not doing very well, and Saladin's definitely ahead of us. I think the AIs are starting to realize this because Caesar demanded a world map, and Louis demanded 170 gold. I gave Caesar the map because it could be useful to have him as Cautious instead of Annoyed. I declined Louis' request because gold is too valuable to give up.
- Barbarian horse archer from the northern tundra came down and killed a worker near Orenberg. Attacked with a maceman (90% odds) and died! Finished off the horse archer with a swordsman.
- Turned down research, accumulating gold in anticipation of upcoming war. Since we now have a pretty good world map, started pulling back caravels for coast guard / pillaging duty on our own continent

Turn 9 (1520 AD)

Turn 10 (1525 AD)
- Saladin has two macemen
- HC completes the Hagia Sophia

Closing notes
- Some cities still don't have Confucianism as I forgot to build missionaries.
- Is Pacifism really advantageous? Seems like the +100%GP production only benefits one or two cities.
- We still have Open Borders with Egypt but this isn't doing much for us and I think we should abandon it as soon as HC or someone else asks. Egypt is really weak (thanks to some early wars with Rome) and we can afford to tick her off. In fact, Hatty would probably make a good next target after Saladin.
- We're second last in power. Only Saladin can attack us, but it does mean that the other AIs are getting all up in our faces: farmer's-1525AD power.jpg
- Looking forward to Astronomy to unlock some of the trading potential.

Looks good Beestar, and I have to say I agree on Pacifism. The question is, what would be better now? OR and theocracy are expensive and paganism is still more expensive than pacifism. Once we start to gear up for war, obviously theocracy will be the way to go, but for now....

I like the specialization too.

I go ahead and put in our Beeline for Biology, I went the gunpowder route to preserve the Colosus for as long as possible.

I ment to switch out of Merc during my turns, but completly forgot. I would also switch to Free Religion to get our relations up, and to cut the costs of our units. Also once you get out of Merc, try to get open borders with as many civs as possible to fatten up our trade routes (which are dismal right now because of Merc).

How far from Biology are we? Four techs if I read it right? So we're looking maybe 20, 25 turns? When that comes in we should have an absolutely amazing amount of food. Should be fun.

I guess this puts Morred up next, if you can play in the next couple of days.
