ct3 - Chieftain Training Day (for newbies only)

Ok, critique before I go to work... :)

Chieftess,
If the spot vacated by Barker is still open, I'd like to fill it. I'll need to read through the thread here to figure out what I need to do, but could you give me a brief synopsis of what will be expected of me? I don't want to ruin the game through my ignorance. Thanks, and I look forward to participating.

Sorry about the white space... I was using a really poor graphics editor.

Preturn:

Very good preturn! Although 3 shields were wasted, it doesn't really bite you as much in chieftain mode. But, we only have 3 immortals (from the latest save), and Pasagardae is somewhat inside the border. We could have let it build another immortal. If a unit was coming close, another spearmen behind-the-lines could have come and defended it. Nice use of diplomacy, too! :D

Turn 1:

Good turn, and nice use of micromanaging.

Turn 2:

Mine grasslands in despotism - good! :D Good movement logs.

turn 3:

Good move on fortifying the spearmen, but I still don't like spearmen in the midst of battles (unless they're escourting units with a weaker defense).

turn 4-7:

More workers. That's always good, espiecally for our newly conquered cities. Also, remember to check the tiles that the AI worked. Sometimes, they mine bonus tiles, and irragate grasslands in despotism. Good preperation for the attack, too. Any diplomatic checking during these turns? Sometimes, the AI will give you a city if they feel pressured. Nice move on the turn 7 science slider.

Turn 8:
When attacking capitals, it's best to have a nice sized stack. 3 is ok, but is risking it. This was a bit :smoke:. If you lose, you end up making the units more powerful.

Turn 9:

Very good move on the diplomacy part! :D Always get everything they have before taking them out! The AI will do surprisingly stupid things when pushed back, or caught in a stalemate (look at GOTM11 ;)).

Turn 10:

Looks like we're back on track! Did you check to see if science could be lowered with 1 or 2 turns left? Those immortals could stand on the hill on the other side of Bapedi, and still get to the city in 1 turn. Over all, good turn.

Also, did you notice that no one has built any wonders yet? They might be soon, but I'm guess that the other civs could be -
a: on seperate small islands
b: fighting constantly

Overall, good turn. (more city critiques when I get back from work)

Well, Shaka approaches us for a deal, so I take him for everything he's got. 71gp lump sum, Horseback Riding, Polytheism, and a worker. This should buy time to get some more offense in place to finish off Shaka.

I assume this means that you are going to let Shaka live for another 20 turns before you destroy him? Finishing off his last city before the 20 turn peace treaty that you negotiated would be a really bad rep. hit.

It does sound like you had a good turn there, though. Isn't it fun warring on your neighbours! :goodjob:

You may become BobtheWarmonger yet :crazyeye:

Barker asked:

I assume this means that you are going to let Shaka live for another 20 turns before you destroy him? Finishing off his last city before the 20 turn peace treaty that you negotiated would be a really bad rep. hit.

How will we get a rep stain if no one knows that we take him out? Does that transcend the reputation stain that we were talking about before?

Thanks for the props guys. I agree with Chieftess' criticism that I vastly underestimated the force needed. I should have at least waited for my second stack to get into range so we could finish them off on one turn. My bad :(

I'm learning to appreciate what a road network can do for you. I just can't believe we have a 100% approval rating. Maybe that's more normal than I thought, but it seemed pretty cool regardless. I was also surprised at how I was able to bring the Immortals much closer to the front than I believed possible. I didn't think I had a shot at even attacking Bapedi in my set, but sure enough they all got within range. :)

I hope that my endless detail isn't boring y'all, but I figure it's more helpful for purposes of critiquing what I did and it helps me catch things I might otherwise miss.

ct - on the earlier dip checks... they were ongoing but Shaka didn't want to chat without a peace accord in hand. That is, until we were rocking his capital. :) Sorry that I failed to mention that.

You are not boring me, Bob. You play a good game and write a lively log. I guess Chieftess is coming back for more comments.

(And by the way, you surely got good ones from her, so far.)

stwils :)

Actually, Bob, for the purpose of a Training Day Game, I think they are excellent write-ups! :goodjob:

As to the rep. hit, if we take him out quickly, before he meets anyone else, we should still be okay. The "stain" for attacking would be more severe than previous, because we have an explicit peace treaty with him, which is good for 20 turns, and needs to be explicitely revoked after that time for no rep hit. But, again, as long as nobody else knows we're a "dastardly" race ( :D ) then there will be no hit.

Yeah, I have seen the best reports here. In more of the ones that have Emperor and Diety, the people don't write too much.

I finally finished my first Emperor game. You can check out my writeup at First emperor Win

Check out the final score!

Excellent game barker! :goodjob:

rwprice, you can replace barker in the lineup. Welcome! :D

In response to stwil's earlier question about irrigation, I did some looking around on the boards, here, and I found an excellent resource!

Improving Your Opening Play

This is a series of strategy articles that would be helpful to anyone having trouble figuring out how to handle the early game. It includes sections on terrain, when to irrigate/mine/etc., when you may want to move your settler, how to get the most out of your position, and so on. I am heavily indebted to cracker for this series. I'm going to be reading it closely myself for tips. :)

Padma, the thread you gave us a link to is a god send!!!

I have looked for just such a strategy guide.

Thanks!

stwils :jump:

rwprice - welcome to the game! :)

You had asked about a few rules or suggestions - Chieftess posted them in the beginning right after Padma's opening play.

We look forward to having you on board.

:D

Padma - Thanks for the link to this great site - truly what I have needed - and now must learn ;)

Just thought I'd post the current turn order. I'll try to do that after each player so we can keep track more easily. :D

1. archer_007
2. stwils
3. BoBtheBUILDER
4. mcdan UP NOW (When Chieftess says "GO")
5. rwprice ON DECK

Edit: clarified "up now"

I thought we were waiting for ct to finish her critique...

I didn't realize GOTM 11 was an emperor game when I started... I was trying to figure out why the AI was expanding so quickly till I saved the game and loaded it up to play later and saw the difficulty level. I'll just say that Barker is ahead of the game as far as talent if he was able to compile that large a score and win against the AI at Emperor. I've played up to 1000 BC and have three, count 'em, three, cities. :(

That we are, Bob. :D

But I know I had to go back and forth in the thread a little to see who was up next, and when rwprice would fit in. So mcdan is "up now", but still must wait until Chieftess finishes her critique.

BTW, you're right, compared to Chieftain, Emperor is a whole 'nother world! I usually play Regent, because I don't have the time available to deal with the level of play necessary to win above that level.

Even compared to Warlord... I started playing the huge Earth scenario on Warlord and I'm doing pretty good with that so far. But I figured I'd try the GOTM since I'd followed that since I ordered my computer in May (I got Civ III with my computer, cool deal, eh?). I had no idea what I was in for, I guess. I've followed some of Sulla's Deity games too (they just wrapped up a cool Deity-level SG). I just don't know how people handle it, I guess it just takes practice and attention to detail. :)
