CTIV-9: The Academians

1750 AD (Inherited)
Zu Chonghi is starving, but there's no extra food to be had as Mansa's borders have some of our land. I veto Ptah's Aquaduct, and go for an Islamic Monastery instead (10 turns).

1755 AD
Socrates starts building an Observatory (10) after finishing an Aquaduct. Ah, I see a Worker is building a Windmill to stop the starvation in Zu Chongzi. FDR has a lot of Riflemen, and we've got squat. We can upgrade some units to Grenadiers if we wanted to...

No good trades on the table at the moment.

1760 AD
Workers are generally building Lumbermills on forest tiles.

1765 AD
Zu Chongzi is no longer starving as the Windmill has finished.

1770 AD
Yawn...

1775 AD
Wuhan starts a University. Ptah's Monastery finishes and the Aquaduct carries on (4 turns). I give Socrates a Scientist since it can afford one without going stagnant...this improves the beakers from 147 to 151.

1780 AD
Yawn...

1785 AD
HC offers a swap of World Maps which we take as we have no knowledge of anything other than his coast. This also reveals Napoleans little corner of the world. Napoleon requests OB which I deny. Islam has spread by itself to Socrates, so once the Observatory is finished, an Islamic Monastery should be built.

1790 AD
Assembly Line comes in and Steel is started (5). It's in the bee-line for Rocketry (Apollo Program), and railways would be nice...I did think about Rifling, but I've been waiting for a better trade than we've been offered so far. Johannes Kepler (Great Scientist) born in Ptah!

1795 AD
Wuhan is renamed J. Keppler! I start building a few Islam Missionary's to spread Islam and get more Monastery's built for the beaker boost. Also, I've built some Grenadier with the idea of taking out the two "rogue" FDR cities, but we need some Cat's to do it.

1800 AD
Shenzhen has Islam...used a missionary.

1802 AD
J. Keppler has finished it's University and starts an Observatory.

Played one too many, sorry about that. FDR has a fair number of Rifles but Grenadiers will handle those OK. As far as I could tell, we have only one city (Shenzen), without an Academy!

Turn "1" -- 1802 AD (playing 9 to even it up)

Primary Goal this turn: set Ruff_Hi up to build the next Academy so he doesn't feel left out ;)

Secondary Goals: Aim for Space, build up Soldiers both to deter the AI and to prep in case FDR needs to be taught an Academic lesson

JesusOnEez indicates we'll need cats for FDR's cities, since Steel is due shortly, I'll aim for cannons instead

I see a sign saying "We should have chopped" ... :hmm: no time like the present. I cancel the nearby workers, hopefully we won't lose the cultural battle before they're done

CITY CHECK
Ptah has gone stagnant, so I fire one of the scientists .. only costs us 4 beakers and we gain 2F2H2C

Socrates is growing slowly, then I see it's working a 3H tile when it can be working a 1F3H tile (maybe we just grabbed it culturally?), I fix, giving the 3H tile to Euclid

Bacon is stagnant, using two citizens. I decide to fire one. I also switch off a village for J.Keppler
---

Finances look good. Civics as well, although I wonder about Representation ... nah, not yet.

Diplomacy, things aren't that bad. Yeah, only Mansa is friendly, but a lot of the other Civs are pleased. I like the tech advantage we currently have on HC.

Religion: Everyone is Christian.
Taoism: Everyone but Shenzen
Islamic: Euclid, Keppler, Bacon, and Alhazen need it. We have 2 missionaries in the pipeline.

In terms of Power I'd like to try to at least catch up to FDR this turn. I upgrade 1 sword to Grenadier.

Everything else looks ok, I press Enter.

Turn 2 -- 1804 AD

Zu Chongzhi: Islamic Missionary > Taoist Temple
Euclid: Aqueduct > Grenadier

Gang, PLEASE BUILD ROADS ON LUMBERMILLS WHEN COMPLETED. It's a waste of turns not to since railroads up the production.

Turn 3 -- 1806 AD

Steel comes in. We need 4 techs before Rocketry:
Rifling
SciMeth
Physics (req SciMeth)
Artillery (req Rifling and Physics)

I go with Rifling first. Due in 4 at 70% (want a little cash, plus time to build Monasteries).

Islam is spread in Euclid (via Missionary)

Turn 4 -- 1808 AD

Mansa demands Steam Power. I tell him we're not going for Diplomatic victory.

FDR wants to trade World Maps, I offer to do so if he throws in Rifling. Surprisingly, he doesn't do it.

Ptah: Islamic Missionary > Islamic Missionary
Euclid: Grenadier > Islamic Monastery

Islam is spread to Alhazen

Turn 5 -- 1810 AD

FDR wants Open Borders. I decline.

Mansa is Emancipated, no negative effect yet.

Socrates: Islamic Monastery > Factory
Alhazen: Bank > Islamic Monastery

Turn 6 -- 1812 AD

Zu Chongzhi: Taoist Temple > Taoist Missionary
Bacon: Cannon > Cannon, however, I think Mansa may spread Islam there next turn

Turn 7 -- 1814 AD

Alex wants Open Borders. I decline.

Rifling comes in. I start Scientific Method, it's due in 4, please see note at bottom of report.

Euclid: Islamic Monastery > Infantry
Shenzen: Library > University

Hrmph, Mansa doesn't try to convert Bacon, apparently.

I promote one City Raider Axe to Infantry.

Turn 8 -- 1816 AD

Napoleon demands 190 gold. I give in, but only because HC is friendly with him.

Ptah: Islamic Missionary > Factory
Zu Chongzhi: Taoist Missionary > Factory (we're going to want to build a Taoist Pagoda and Hermitage here)
Alhazen: Islamic Monastery > Islamic Missionary

I spread Islam in Keppler. I spread Taoism in Shenzhen.

Upgrade another City Raider Axe to Infantry.

Turn 9 -- 1818 AD

Islam spreads in Bacon of its own accord! We're now completely spread of all 3 of our religions.

I start building an Islamic Monastery in Bacon (queueing the cannon behind it).

Turn 10 -- 1820 AD

Euclid: Infantry > Infantry (maybe put Ironworks here?)
Alhazen: Islamic Missionary > Infantry (whoops, guess we'll have an extra in case we found another city)
Keppler: Observatory > Factory (there's a Windmill build which will put some hammers into this when completed)
Shenzen: Christian Monastery > Islamic Monastery

I'm sending one of the Infantry up north.

Ok, SciMeth is due next turn. Now, the question is: does the research bonus survive the discovery of SciMeth? If so, switch to another tech (railroad or democracy) while finishing up the Monasteries. If not, I don't think we need any more monasteries.

I've started working on ramping up Production. We may want to switch to Organized Religion while building the factories, etc., since we only need 1 more GS (for now).

Sadly, we did not pass FDR in power, but it is increasing.

There's a Great Scientist coming available in 8-9 turns, so my primary goal is fulfilled ;). That can be increased by stagnating Ptah.

Here's the save:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/CTIV-9_AD-1820.Civ4SavedGame

Ruff_Hi is UP, Maquis ON DECK

I did a little playing around ... the :science: bonus from monastery disappears with SciMeth ... I don't know if it's worth delaying just to build more.

Of course, we'll lose the Great Library scientists as well.

Hey, it's tough enough making sure one of you gets to build one, I ain't a miracle worker!

EDIT: Waitasecond ... you had your chance and wasted it on Philosophy! So I don't want to hear any griping! ;)

Gang, PLEASE BUILD ROADS ON LUMBERMILLS WHEN COMPLETED. It's a waste of turns not to since railroads up the production.

I spent quite a lot of worker hours building roads during my turnset, and lumbermills for the exact reasons you outline (production bonus). Nice to see our military getting upgrades as well.

Looks like we've got the variant side of it won (was it ever in doubt)? Next stop Apollo Program and er...Kremlin.

:D

After we get Apollo, the following techs are a priority (not necessarily in this order):
Biology (cities are stagnating and we can use the farm boost)
Railroad > Combustion
Electricity > Radio
Industrialism > Plastics
Computers > Robotics

Space Elevator should be our top priority. After that 3 Gorges and Eiffel (prefer the former as I don't think we should build too many coal plants). After we get the next GS (or earlier, if Ruff_Hi doesn't mind missing one ;) ), we should probably switch to Organized Religion for the production boost.

EDIT: Just a reminder on what we need to get to Apollo:
SciMeth
Physics
Artillery
Rocketry

Artillery/Rocketry may have long research times, so we might want to divert to Railroad > Combustion first, or maybe even do Electricity > Industrialism to get Aluminum to speed up Apollo. I would say as long as we're on track, we should pick the fastest tech from the above at most points, since all give an advantage.

It looks like we are on target. We have 7 of the 8 cities with Acadamies and 4 are currently building factories. We should discover Physics this turn set and it has a FREE Great Scientist - will he be ours? I've also swapped to Org Religion after I popped the expected Scientist for the +25% bonus. I think that when we have finished the factories (I started 1 coal plant before I read the comment from ChrTh about the 3G Dam), we should go back to Pacifism for another round of GPs. We want a mixture this time so that we can trigger a Golden Age (or two). We also want a few GP Engineers so that we can rush some wonders (Kremlin / 3G Dam / Space Elevator) - there is a free GP Engineer with Fusion - maybe we use him for our last Golden Age.

We have two sources of Oil on our land so that is good - we don't know about aluminium yet - tech outstanding.

Looking at the cities, Ptah is our best hammer city and it is down in population. When we get more people into that city, it will be a bigger hammer city (1 4H tile unused and 1 3H tile unused in max hammer configuration).

I pushed the tech slider up to race towards Physics for the free scientist and ran down our bank balance - we are just in the red (-3) when running at 90% - someone took pity on us and donated a chuck of gold (see below).

I couple of interesting pictures from my turn set ...

Could you say NO to this trade?

Yay Me!
ctiv9sc017ss3.jpg

I was 'that close' to changing the city name to 'Ruffs Scientist' :D

When will this city give it up ...

You can also see the culture that Mansa's city is pumping out. Taking distance 2 tiles away from us from 4 tiles away.

Heh, funny video ...

Anyway, our risk of losing space is production I think. Research wise, we should be able to match HC. Suggest switchin our remaining GP points to favour GE for rushing of space elevator.

We need to pump culture in Zu Chongzi a bit to take back our rice for growth there. Hmm .. how did Mansa generate so much culture?

That city is the holy city for two (2!) religions. That always helps.

Right, Maquis still hasn't posted his turnset in VQ06 and I have a window of opportunity now, so I'm going to steal the save!

Expect a report in a few hours.

More builder's turns, really.

In 1842AD, HC demanded that we switch to Buddhism. As we only have one city with Buddhism it would lose us most of the Org Rel construction bonus, so I tell him to go away and stop being so intolerant. -1 from him, but he remains Pleased, so no harm done.

During the same turn HC also completed the Kremlin.

Artillery was finished in 1852AD and we switched to Rocketry. We made the following trade to Mansa:

civilization42006071518104940em2.jpg

This allowed our cities (especially Zu) to grow more quickly.

FDR asked us to go to war with Alex in 1956AD, but I politely declined. BTW, was I supposed to declare war on FDR? I noticed that there were lots of grens on the hills above Philly, but in the end I redistributed them to various cities to help combat Emancipation anger (HC has now switched also).

Other points of interest: Rocketry is due in 3 turns. I built the Hermitage in Zu and borders are now due to expand in 2 turns. A Taoist Pagoda is also currently in production there for an extra 50% culture. We haven't revolted to Pacifism yet as I wanted to allow our cities to grow a bit first (thanks to Biology) before siphoning off the population as specialists.

We're still doing well scientifically. Mansa hasn't researched Rocketry or Electricity yet. Here is the current situation:

We're moving now! :goodjob:

Since Maquis has been kidnapped by alien forces I'm going to take a look at the save in a sec and add some comments.

From my tech list earlier:

SciMeth
Physics
Artillery
Rocketry -- due in 3
Biology
Railroad > Combustion
Electricity > Radio
Industrialism > Plastics (3 Gorges)
Computers > Robotics (Space Elevator)

Electricity and Railroad are both 6 turns. We should probably head to Industrialism asap to get Aluminum so I would do Electricity > Industrialism next. We then need everything else in the list for Robotics and Space Elevator.

Let's not trade any more techs to Mansa. Right now he's our greatest threat to a Space Age victory. Even though the cash was nice, I don't think I would've traded for Military Tradition since we don't need the tech but Mansa did.

Our weak point is Production. Anything we can do to increase Production should be done.
