If you need someone to take Methos place......

I imagine it will happen when ChrTh is back in the pocket .... why do people call it a pocket anyway? :crazyeye:
It is called a pocket because when you are back, you are in the fold.

First I have to find the origin of In Like Flynn, now I must provide the origin of Out of Pocket here. Perhaps we should change this to CTIV-9: The Phraseologists?

Alright, after tallying the votes, we're going Communist:

ctiv9a1pk.jpg

As a result, Rex and Methos have been downgraded from Communists to Trotskyites.

Since I always make the environment random, I check to see what we got:

ctiv9b1fb.jpg

Ok, normal sea level but a colder world. Hopefully people won't turn to burning books!

And the starting position:

ctiv9c2hy.jpg

Ivory and Cows. Southern hemisphere, but not close to the ice. I'll be moving the Warrior SE to get a better view, but I suspect I'll settle in place.

Techwise I'm going to look towards the top of the tree ...

Roster
ChrTh -- UP! Playing tonight (20 turns first rotation)
Ruff_Hi -- On Deck!
Maquis
Scowler
GreyFox
JesusOnEez

Alternate:

Trotskyites:
Rex_Tyranus
Methos

Turn 0 -- 4000 BC

Ok, Warrior moves SE as specified, and reveals that there will be rice in the BFC as well

Beijing is built, giving us 4 ivories in our BFC. Warrior started.

ctiv9d4vk.jpg

For techs, I start The Wheel with an eye towards Pottery.

Turn 1 -- 3960 BC

Warrior may have already spotted the eastern shore ...

Turn 3 -- 3880 BC

Ocean Ho!

ctiv9e4pw.jpg

Turn 5 -- 3800 BC

The borders of Beijing have expanded, revealing a Hut to the NW. Still no contact with other Civs.

Turn 6 -- 3760 BC

Find some Jungle in the NE. We must be close to the equator...and turning on the resource icons shows that we are indeed.

Turn 9 -- 3640 BC

The Wheel comes in. Start Hunting, due in 5.

Beijing grows to Size 2, I mm to get fast growth and extra commerce.

Buddhism has been founded in a distant land.

The Warrior climbs a hill, revealing several things:

ctiv9f0ae.jpg

A hut to the N. Dyes to the NW (which will be nice once the jungle is cleared out when paired with the bananas). And a border ... Huyana?

Turn 10 -- 3600 BC

Warrior > Warrior. I fortify.

Warrior pops the hut, we receive 47 gold.

Turn 11 -- 3560 BC

:wallbash: Warrior killed by a Panther! Our Beijing Warrior is sent out to scout.

Turn 13 -- 3480 BC

Warrior pops hut to the NW, gets 36 gold.

Turn 14 -- 3440 BC

Hunting comes in, start Animal Husbandry.

Turn 15 -- 3400 BC

I believe I've found the Western Coast:

ctiv9g5nf.jpg

Turn 17 -- 3320 BC

Nice jungle city site with 2 bananas and 2 dyes.

Turn 18 -- 3280 BC

Yikes! Another Panther! However, we're on a jungle hill so hopefully we'll survive this time.

Turn 19 -- 3240 BC

Warrior takes damage, but survives!

Beijing completes Warrior (guard duty), starts Worker.

We finally reveal the nation to the North:
ctiv9h6fs.jpg

Much better than Huyana as a neighbor.

Turn 20 -- 3200 BC

Warrior moves 1N to fortify on a wooded hill.

Here is the world as we know it:
ctiv9i2ja.jpg

I'm hoping there's a lot of land to the South, my guess is that it's just us and Mansa on this continent (just a guess, though). We may want to go for a settler next into the Jungle area if we're feeling the need to contain.

Here's the Save:

HA - I have found an even better city site - more details tomorrow.

wOOt! We've started. Can we trample Mansa under our War Elephant like feet? Pretty please?

Oooh, I think I mentioned it before, but my first turns are probably going to turn up whilst I'm on holiday...I'm back on Saturday, 1st July so could you mark me down as a skip until then.

Ta.

Busy busy busy. Wife's birthday so home early for celebrations, training tomorrow (giving, not taking), client meeting that I wanted to go to but cannot tomorrow, mets game on Thur, World cup soccer match to watch (go aussies!). So much to do, so little time.

Hence ... short report written on train with undoctored screenshots (depending upon length of trip).

First of all, Beijing does not have an acadamy! What is the penalty for that? I stop the worker and start a scout - plan to send him south.

Spoiler the future :

CTIV-9-sc-001.jpg

Turn 20 (3200 BC)
Beijing begins: Scout

IBT:
Hinduism founded in a distant land
Contact made: Greek Empire

And ChrTh said that we were the only two on this island - wrong! Don't you just love saying that.

Turn 21 (3160 BC)
Tech learned: Animal Husbandry

IBT:

Turn 22 (3120 BC)
Research begun: Bronze Working
Beijing finishes: Scout

I selected Bronze working so that we can chop some settlers - we need to block off the way south and quick. Alex is North too. Our healing warrior was two tiles away from a hut and Alex's scout stole in - grrr. Scout heading South - runs into Bear AND Lion! Bye-bye scout - waste of time building him.

IBT:
While defending, 1 of 10, Unimatrix 0 (Scout) defeats (0.16/1): Barbarian Bear at 31.5 percent.

Turn 25 (3000 BC)
1 of 10, Unimatrix 0 (Scout) promoted: Woodsman I

Yay! Scout - best investment I ever made. And experience too.

Turn 31 (2760 BC)
Tribal village results: a little gold
Beijing finishes: Worker

I couldn't do much mapping down south - too busy playing tag with the lion. The worker is sent to pasture the cows.

Turn 32 (2720 BC)
Beijing begins: Settler - at the end of my turns, I have 1 chop in this guy and he is due in 3 - I don't have any protection handy for him so I would suggest he takes Beijing's warrior and head North - we need to put in some choke cities to stop the other 2 civs to our North getting to The Great Southern Plain.

IBT:
Contact made: American Empire

Everyone together now - WRONG WRONG WRONG. We are not alone. Did I say 2, I meant 3 civs to our North.

Turn 33 (2680 BC)
Tech learned: Bronze Working

Turn 34 (2640 BC)
Research begun: Archery

IBT:
While defending, 1 of 10, Unimatrix 0 (Scout) defeats (1.00/1): Barbarian Wolf at 100.0 percent.

Turn 38 (2480 BC)
Tribal village results: experience

IBT:
Judaism founded in a distant land

Turn 39 (2440 BC)
1 of 10, Unimatrix 0 (Scout) promoted: Woodsman II

Turn 40 (2400 BC)

And here are the promised screenshots of our land with the kick-ass city site shown as the purple city. Actually, the light blue city above the purple (need to look at the same city in both screenshots as it is on a boundry) is really good too (cows, fish, rice and wine).

Shot South
CTIV-9-sc-003.jpg

Shot North
CTIV-9-sc-002.jpg

I'm not happy with any of these city placements so feel free to ignore them all. For my money, it is fairly obvious that Beijing is in the wrong place - it should have been 1 Tile NW - that would have gone a long way to cleaning up my city placements. The other option is that I can claim to be way ahead of my time by proposing the Green Corridor (TM) around Beijing.

Spoiler :
Did anyone notice the changes to the logger?

Note: The zip file includes the save and the two screenshots (not marked up) of the South and North.

4 Capitalist-worker exploiting nations to the north! We are not defeatists though (for they get :ar15: ), the Communist Academicians shall crush the defeat mongers and capitalists under our boots.

Settling order is a bit tricky there, for this variant you want a really nice big GP farm (which to me looks like that city getting those bannas and dyes--farm all those grassland too and wow! that will be a big city!), but of course that does not block the path south and it won't be a good city for a long bit still.

Strong fast-growing cities is way more important than utilizing every space.

We must be on a big-ass continent with 2 more Civs north of Mansa. The question is, do we settle north with cities that will take a long time to be productive to block, or do we settle south for the good cities?

Is it just me, or does Ruff_Hi enjoy saying I'm wrong a little too much :hmm: ... perhaps I need to leave him out of CTIV-10

Putting on my hair-splitting hat for a minute - I said you were wrong once. I said I was wrong 3 times. Maybe I just like saying WRONG!

And I vote for North to block. Yes, the cities will take a while to get up and running, but we really just need 1 border pop to block.

Ah, ok, I thought you were calling me WRONG both times. You can be in CTIV-10: Peacenik Reeducation Redux :D

If we do go North, do not Open Borders until we settle the South. I think we can win this game with 6-7 cities, so if we can actually build them all ourselves that would be super.

I realized playing CTIV-10 would be the best punishment I could give Ruff_Hi ...

Hmm ... something is not very right. ChrTh barred ruff from CTIV-10 for calling ChrTh wrong. Then ruff posted to say ChrTh is wrong again, and ChrTh re-invited ruff to CTIV-10??? :crazyeye: ... something is obviously very wrong!
Thanks GF - I needed a good laugh today! :D Maybe he is setting CTIV-10 to be a SG where you are deliberately wrong.

Well, I'm home with a sick kid today, so I can grab this... I'll play in a couple hours. Hopefully that's not wrong of me to take it so quick! :p
