CTIV-9: The Academians

Something I just thought of:

Whenever we build an Academy, we should rename the city to the last name of the Great Scientist. This does two things:

1) Pay tribute to the Great Scientist for creating such a fine institution
2) Make it a hell of a lot easier to keep track of which cities have an Academy in it.

Just a thought.

Great idea as long as the scientist is not called Beijing or similar. Maybe we should change the names to "Dr Einstein" or similar.

@ruff - That Total Realism mod you're using isn't going to alter our save from vanilla civ is it? Hmmmm???
I am using Blue Marble which changes the look of the country side and my cobbled mod pack. Neither do anything to the save (I think). I've used them extensively in other SGs and haven't had a problem.

How abt just adding the parenthesis with A inside t the city name? In any case, as long as there is a way of differentiating, its okay. I like the great scientists names, and I don't think there is any GS with chinese names. The only chinese GPersons I see form the game are artists ...

Apparently Maquis's sick kid is demanding more attention than Maquis thought. Hope nothing serious though.

Nothing too serious with the little guy. All the serious stuff happened with my turnset though...

Turn 1: Archery in. I chose IW next, because there's a lot of jungle to the N that needs to be chopped... and it would be nice to find some Iron as well. This will take a convenient 20 turns :)

Turn 4: Settler done. I order up an Archer next. Send the Settler off with warrior escort to the Bronze & Rice NW of Beijing. I was thinking of moving SE of Ruff's Red Dot... putting the copper in the first teir, since we have no way yet of generating culture... it'll be nice to get the copper online sooner.

Turn 6: Ok, I guess it was wrong to send the settler out with only a warrior escort! They move next to a barb warrior. And...

IBT: Barb warrior takes out our warrior and our settler is toast!!

Sorry if I did not pay tribute to the RNG god... or offer a sacrifice... but that was not fun!! I think that's the first time I've lost an escorted settler this early in the game... OUCH!

Ok, well I really didn't seem to do much the last 2/3 of the turnset. That really didn't make my day.

Learned IW on my last turn, and of course Iron is a ways away. There is a decent spot to the SW, in the area of Purple Dot.

Sorry fo rthe terse turnlog... I am just [pissed] at losing the settler....

Maquis - no worries mate. Actually, it is probably for the best as we didn't have a GP Scientist to create the acadamy anyway.

Oooooh, Blue Marble looks nice. Me wants. I have to admit, that I thought the Blue Marble mode just made the marble look, er...blue so it was more easy to spot. Definately looks nicer though.

Right, last minute posts done, and off on holiday! See you in just over a week chaps!

Maquis -- Just played!
Scowler -- UP!
GreyFox -- On Deck!
JesusOnEez -- On Holiday

Still 20 turns mates.

Bad luck, Maquis.

Got it and will play tonight.

Is it just me, or has Civfanatics been running slower than usual the last few days? It sometimes takes several attempts before a page loads successfully.

@ Greyfox: that's it exactly. Thanks for confirming.

Having taken a look at the save prior to playing, I thought it was worth making a couple of comments about the situation after Maquis' turnset.

As you can see, Mansa is caught between America, Greece, and Us:

He has already built two cities and is almost out of space, so he'll be expanding in our direction fast. This is where the loss of the settler is really going to hurt: I doubt we will have time to block him off. We need to prioritize the best sites now - note that the central city marked by ruff will already overlap borders with Mansa - and decide whether to go for the high-food sites or link up copper preparatory to an early war.

Anyhow, I have made another dot map with some additional possibilities now that a few more resources have been uncovered. Sadly, this doesn't solve the problem of actually grabbing all these sites, but it is further food for thought. (I've lightened the map so you can hopefully see the borders of Mali as well)

Would appreciate any comments / advice before starting the turnset (settler is due in 4).

If we're going to try to expand fast, I think our next city should be the green one. With the cows and grassland it should be able to grow faster for settler whipping. It'll also help block the southward passage somewhat (not fully, unfortunately, unless Beijing does an expansion soon).

Agreed - green should be the first site. Also, it is on the same river as Beijing so you only need to road from the copper to the river for Beijing to be able to use that copper.

Second site should be the light blue above - to block off the South. Beijing will not expand anytime soon - it just expanded.

Also, is that IRON I see two tiles South of the cows on the West? If so, a city 1 tile South of that will have RICE, FISH, WINE and IRON.

Question - is there a preference between the dot map above (basically solid colours showing the city and borders) and my dot map (pale colours showing the city and the borders)?

Good. That's settled then - or will be :)

Yes, with room for another 3-food resource city (if you don't mind the overlap):

Or you could go another 1 SW further and get Fish + Rice + Crabs + Iron:

I personally found your map slightly harder to read, simply because the shading tended to mask the tile colours (the combination of poor eyesight and the less distinctive colours of Blue Marble plains). No problem with the actual content, of course.

lurker's comment:
I think I prefer the more traditional dot map with solid outlines and solid center dots.

Scowler, when you say you lightened the picture, what process are you using? (correction in a photoshop type app?)

We are distinctly lacking in escorts for the new settler so I decide to leave Beijing undefended for a few turns, sending the archer there out in advance towards the proposed site. It is just as well, as a barbarian archer and warrior are wandering around that area. I am able to trick the archer into attacking mine across the river, so that gets him out of the way and gives the settler the opportunity to nip across and found Shanghai in 1360BC (you'll notice that we were just in time to interdict a nosy Malinese skirmisher):

I start work on an archer, but I am planning to switch to something else soon...

Stonehenge is built in 1320BC by the Americans, but this is of little interest to us.

Writing is finished in 1240BC and we start on Mysticism. This only takes 3 turns, and as soon as it is ready I switch the build at Beijing to an obelisk. The city will grow in a couple more turns and I will then whip the obelisk so that the borders expand as soon as possible, giving us access to the copper.

Meanwhile, Mansa has noticed that we have acquired Writing and wastes no time in asking us for OB. Obviously, I tell him where to go.

In 1080BC the Oracle is built by Mali (no Confucianism, thank goodness), but the following turn our second city is founded (I chopped the settler and once more left Beijing unguarded to escort him):

This time we weren't quite so quick and we now have a skirmisher running around trapped behind our borders. You will note that I didn't settler at Cyan Dot after all: by this time I was getting a little alarmed by the speed at which the other civs were expanding (you will see from the screenshot that Roosevelt has already founded a city a few tiles to the west, snatching those bananas), and wasn't confident that I could expand the borders of the new city quickly enough to stop someone from slipping past. The new spot solves this problem and keeps both the copper and rice. The only disadvantage is that it is one tile off the coast, but it only wastes a single water tile that would have been of little use anyway - once the jungle is cleared there will be a vast stretch of grassland available that will have better potential than the water.

In 925BC our luck runs out. There is still only a single archer at Beijing and I send him out to defend the city's rice from a barb. Even though the barb is attacking across a river he still manages to win and the rice ends up being pillaged:

There is no danger of Beijing itself being assaulted, but it is annoying nonetheless. A replacement kills the barb before he gets any further, and that is how things stand at the moment.

GreyFox: please return the victorious archer to Beijing, pronto. Apart from the defense aspect, the city is about to grow and will become unhappy unless the archer is in place. Also, please bring down the worker from Guang to replace the rice farm.

Both Shanghai and Guang now have obelisks, so borders will expand in a matter of turns. Beijing is now building a library so it won't be long before a scientist is available. I have sent a newly-built worker out to Shanghai and he is currently building a road from the river to the copper. However, be aware that there is a barb warrior nearby - I'm not sure yet whether he will head for Shanghai or Beijing. I have been using the scout for spotting duty to try to prevent any ABCs from popping up, but there seem to be quite a few nasties coming up from the south so I suppose it is only a matter of time before they become more established.

I did a very quick gamma / contrast / saturation adjustment to make the colours slightly clearer, using IrfanView:

It took no more than a couple of seconds to complete - less time than it would have taken Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop to even load...
