CTIV-9: The Academians

GreyFox is up, and will hopefully not screw up the settler like I did :crazyeye: :D

I'm on deck, unless JOE is back in time.

EDIT: Scowler, looks like a good set of turns. Glad to see war is over. I'll have more comments when I get a chance to look at the save later.

Scowler said:
BTW, thanks so much Maquis for not telling me about that barb city that had popped up in the SE... :p
The Barb city popped on the 2nd turn of my turn set and I did include it in my report (see last montage picture)!

Oh, I might have guessed it would all be down to you! :p

(And apologies to Maquis: I shall only blame you for not removing it...)

Scowler said:

What is this? I report it and you are still upset? I actually like having some barb cities around - let them develop the land for me and also train some of my units. Also, they make it that much harder for an AI to found a city there.

I have it ... playing soon (better clear this tonight before I am UP n 2 more SGs tomorrow ... :p)

Abt the religious situation, one possibility is for us to convert to Christianity as well, while spread Taoism for the shine money (if we have a shrine). Given that cultural or diplomacy is the more likelihood route, having Christianity would not be such a bad thing, right???

--

While it sucks for the One Continent One Religion plan that Mansa got Christianity, at least it means the other Civs aren't so far ahead of us. I would spread Taoism to all our cities, build at least one monastery, and then convert to Christianity and spread it to all our cities as well.

EDIT: We don't have the Taoist Shrine, and who knows when we'll actually get it

SECOND EDIT: We could also build a Monastery in the Christian city and not convert until after Ptah and a couple others have been converted.

Well, I'll give you that much. But if you wish to keep barbarians (nasty, smelly creatures) then you must be the one who looks after them, clears up their mess, deals with their tantrums, etc. :hammer:

And could you ask your "friends" to kindly move their city so that it conforms with the agreed dot map... :crazyeye:

P.S., I'm sure GF has noticed already, but when I said a miss would be ready next turn I actually meant at Ptah rather than Nanjing.

Scowler said:

I'll get right on that during my next turn set. However, you should know that the only thing they really listen to is a good head kicking.

Edit: Do WE have an agreed dot map?

AH ... its time for me to give a tutorial to the Conference de Academia again ... but I have not prepared anything!

Let's see ... how about we talk about trade?

Trading 101

I asked Mansa for a technology exchange, here is what he offered.

ctiv9-AD0600-mansa-trade.jpg

Hmmm ... construction? But we are researching that.

Let's swap that with Horseback Riding ... its actually cheaper than Construction ... no???

Hmm ... Okay, Let's get construction and 160gold ...

No.

Hmm .. how about 100 gold.

No.

Geez ... obstinate old fool. 50 gold?

No.

:aargh:

20g?

NO.

Ok, you win, I give up! :crazyeye: 10 gold it is.

Let's check Roosy next ...

ctiv9-AD0600-roosy.jpg

Hmm ... he only has Calendar to offer. I looked around, and saw no calendar resources in our land ... so calendar is not only not helpful, it will actually harm us by obseleting our Obelisks. Calendar should only be taken just before we wanted Astronomy (if we really need it).

Nah. no trade for you.

Ok, next trade ... er ... actually, there is no more trade.

But here is the situation at the end of my turnset:

ctiv9-AD0800-tech.jpg

As you can see, we are almost completing research of Paper. That should opens up more trade. Apparently, Mansa is now ready to trade us

Heh heh, let's see, why don't we move on to religion?

Religion 101

I completed the first phase of our plan (the new one, since the Taoism-In-Unity-plan has gone down the drain with Mansa founding Christianity) -- spreading Taoism throughout the Chinese Empire. In fact, one more Taoist Miss is almost ready to convert any new city that we will eventually found or capture.

I have also constructed a temple (actually its more like whipped) in the holy city. If the team thinks its worth it, what we can do is to have some priest set up there to generate GProphet points. IMHO, not worth it. Not only will that take ages, it also push back our scientist.

Next player may proceed with the plan of spreading Christianity ... one good thing abt OR is we get to build missionaries without needed a Monastry.

Okay, that pretty much cover religions ... what should I talk abt next??

Hmm ... this is one of the quietest turnset that i am having trouble finding tutorial materials!!!

City Naming 101

Ok, we found our latest city ...

ctiv9-AD0620-tianjin.jpg

Huh??? Beijing? I thought we already had a Beijing!!!

Okay, I see, Beijing was renamed Ptah, and now the computer wantrs another Beijing?

Nah, that will confuses the hell out of people ... I renamed it to Tianjin, as I think that's the next city name in line.

We also had a change in name for Shanghai:

ctiv9-AD0760-socrates.jpg

Its now known as Socrates ... in honor of the Academy founded by Socrates.

Adminsitrivia -- For lack of a better name ...

Here is the world:

ctiv9-AD0800-world.jpg

As you can see, the barb infestation is still there. But I have an elephant, a few axes there. I also have a cataoult joining there shortly (in case the barbs produce another defender in the city).

The barbie had, at one point, 4 archers in that city, but they foolishly suicided one into our axe. And then, I got tired of waiting for reinforcement (axes has a low low odds of 20+%, so don't waste axes there.), so I charged the elephant in and killed one more archer. The elephant is now ready for another promotion, suggest the next player do so to hasten its recovery.

Oh, I have also started a settler (should finish soon) in Guanzhou. Suggested site would be one that grabs us the rice and horse, or one that grabs us the iron, rice and beavers. I pulled the archer near Roosy's border in advance to head towards the site.

The fishing boats is sleeping with the galley at the fishing site ... as sson as Tianjin's border popped (I have spread Taoism to Tianjin, so it should occur soonish), you can get the fish on-line.

Alright, tried to determine if JesusOnEez would be back soon, but he didn't post to the Out of Pocket Thread  and he didn't add it to his signature [pissed] ... I had to dig back to Page 4, where on 6/21 he indicated he'd be gone for more than a week, so that puts me up again.

Playing tonight, should have an update later. Will try my best to get the settler in the right place this time.

GreyFox -- Built Socrates' Academy

Just a quick note, Alex might have founded a city off to the far south... he snuck that settler off in a galley back in my turnsets. I don't know if anyone re-scouted down there or not...

Hey Gang,

I wrenched my back a couple days ago, and sitting down is putting me in a lot of pain ... and since work requires me to sit down for 9 hours a day any additional sitting is no fun. I'm not going to request a skip ... yet ... but I am not going to play tonight in the hopes that I'll feel better tomorrow night to play.

GreyFox said:
 you could play standing ...

Don't think I didn't try ;)

no problem, between maquis, scowler and myself, we advanced like 12.23471 turns a day ... you could take a rest for a day ...

I feel much better today (did a lot of exercising last night to hopefully loosen it up), so I expect to play tonight.

How euphemistic of you. Glad you are feeling better, though - back injuries can be a real nightmare. Just don't do anything energetic like declaring war.

Turn 0 -- 800 AD

First things first ... is there still a settler running around? All signs point to NO:
ctiv9n8jq.jpg

Granted, he may be hanging out in the fog. But there are definitely no cities down there.

Second things second: what to do about the barb city :hmm: ... I don't like it at all. I'm going to raze it ... it was suggested we get a city that has Iron, Beavers, and the Rice ... but there's a city-spot on the river that gets 2 beavers, the iron, and sheep. I'm going to settle there. It'll also give us the ability to still build a city (after we have good economy going) to grab the rice and horses in the BFC.

Thirstly, I preempt Ptah's Temple build for a Monastery build--more science, man! Socrates gets one queued after the Sword finishes next turn.

Finally, I'm going to build up more troops! You know, in case my back feels good enough to declare war

Turn 1 -- 820 AD

ctiv9o1ak.jpg

On the plus side, we're not the weakest. On the negative side, there are two powerful Civs currently undiscovered. Hopefully they hate and are fighting each other.

Socrates: Sword > Taoist Monastery

I can reduce Science to 60% and still get Paper next turn, so I do.

Turn 2 -- 840 AD

Paper comes in. I start Feudalism (due in 14 @ -2gpt) for now.

Nanjing: Taoist Missionary > Library

Great Lighthouse BIFAL.

:coffee: (I'm not attacking the Barb city until it's less likely to kill our troops to do so).

I make the following trade:
ctiv9p8oa.jpg

I wanted Metal Casting so that I can switch from Feudalism to Machinery (Cho-Ko-Nu!). Due in 12 @ -8gpt. You'll notice that Mansa already has Feudalism.

Turn 3 -- 860 AD

Mansa and FDR both want to trade World Maps. Since I just got Mansa's WM out of him, I see no reason to.

Barb City pops an Archer that attacks (and loses to) an Axe.

Mansa adopts Serfdom and Vassalage.

Turn 4 -- 880 AD

Guangzhou: Settler > Christian Missionary
Ptah: Taoist Monastery > Taoist Temple

:coffee:

Turn 5 -- 900 AD

Attack on Burgundian:
Catapult defeats Archer!
Elephant defeats Archer, and Burgundian is razed.

Hey, look who I found!
ctiv9q9xl.jpg

Turn 6 -- 920 AD

Ptah: Taoist Temple > Forge
Tianjin: Lighthouse > Barracks

Tianjin's borders expand, I build the Fishing nets.

Mansa now has Optics.

Turn 7 -- 940 AD

Socrates: Taoist Monastery > Catapult
Guangzhou: Christian Missionary > Axe

:coffee:

Turn 8 -- 960 AD

New Beijing is built
ctiv9r5gq.jpg

Library is started. And Taoism is spread there.

Christianity is spread to Ptah.

Turn 9 -- 980 AD

FDR wants us to trade him Code of Laws for 40 Gold :crazyeye: ... however, I notice he now has Feudalism, so I make this trade:

ctiv9s5mk.jpg

I don't revolt.

Alex wants Open Borders. I say No. (I bet he wants to get a unit to his floating Settler)

The burgeoning Chinese Empire now has 1 Million Souls!

Turn 10 -- 1000 AD

Barb Archer loses to an Axe.

Guang: Axe > Longbow
Nanjing: Library > Workboat

Chichen Itza BIFAL.

Healed troops start leaving New Beijing for the Northern border.

Ok, the Millenium is upon us! I have a worker building a "Southern Road" towards New Beijing. I've been moving the scout around in the south to minimize Barb popups.

Alex's settler still hasn't moved.

Once we get Machinery, we might want to trade it for Optics and more (HBR?). Or maybe hold onto it.

Yikes, look what FDR did!
ctiv9t3cu.jpg

And that of course results in
ctiv9u5kf.jpg

After Ptah finishes the forge, we should Christian Missionary pump to get us over to Christianity asap (so that all the Christian Civs on our landmass don't crusade our a$$).

Hey - what happened to the nice cuddly barbs? Where they not providing enough training and general fun-in-the-sun for you?

Got it. I will not be able to get to this until Thur night so if Maquis wants a swap - that is fine by me.
