CTIV-9: The Academians

Do I have to do it myself :gripe:

Ruff -- Built Galileo Galilei Academy

Yes, yes, I know I am streching my 48hrs...

Here ya go then:

Looking around.... hmmm, we've achieved our Academedian status? All cities seem to have names of scientists! Cool....

What, you mean we still have to win? hmm... ok then I guess I play my turnset.

Research: Finished Rocketry (Mansa beat us to it by 1 turn!) Chose Electricity next, due in 6. Once Electricity was in, I chose Railroad. I think the added production will help, as we seem to have a lot of mines & mills. Also, our workers are sitting on their collective thumbs at this point. This is currently due in 4 turns.

One note on research, we should look at getting Democracy. We're starting to feel the Emancipation pinch. +2 to +4 in most cities, and Socrates is unhappy because of it. Mansa is the only one who has it available for trade, and someone told me we do not want to trade with him.

Been training troops in most cities, but have the following builds going:

Ptah: Ironworks
Alhazan: Apollo Program
Socrates: Wall Street

No, I did not declare war on America, but we can at any time. We did steal another tile from Philly. We are close to passing Roosevelt in power... so it's up to the next players if/when to declare...

Not much else going on, I think we can make this a great Space Race, as we have some excellent production in several of our cities, and may even be the first to complete Apollo. I'd still say that's a great way for the Academdians to win the game.

We're definitely in the Space Race, I feel, so let's not attack America. Make sure we keep the troops coming, though, to dissuade attackers.

Tech Situation:
SciMeth
Physics
Artillery
Rocketry
Biology
Railroad -- Due in 4
Combustion
Electricity
Radio
Industrialism > Plastics (3 Gorges)
Computers > Robotics (Space Elevator)

I think I would research Industrialism next to see if we have Aluminum (and to use it to speed up building the parts).

If you feel you must trade with Mansa for Democracy, go ahead. But if we lose the Space Race to him ... blame Maquis.

EDIT: If we pop another Great Scientist, hold on to him for either a late game Golden Age or for emergency Academy build (if we get an American city, for example).

blame Maquis

Oh sure... shoot the messenger! All I did was mention that MM had Democracy... I never advocated that we trade with him for it... :p

And since Greyfox did it to me... 10 hrs... 11 hrs... tick... tock...

Finally, its the old professor's lecture time again. Hmmm ... all cities have an academy? Hmm ... that makes it hard for me to decide where I should go for my first lecture ...

Hmm ... where?

while deciding, the war trumpet blows! ...

Fortunately, we are not the target, its poor Roosey:

Heh, Topic for my next lecture: "Its a Dog Eat Dog World".

We were two turns away from getting railways when HC offers this trade:

ctiv9-AD1884-HC-trade.jpg

This is evidence that the AI knows how much we have researched a tech into. Else, no AI in the right mind would offer a much more expensive Railroad for a much less beakers Military-Trad, and even add 260 gold to spice up the offer.

Anyway, I take the trade ... It save us 2 turns, Military Trad is not useful in Space Race, and our workers would finally have something to do.

Then Its Rossy turn to come begging ...

ctiv9-AD1886-Roosy-beg.jpg

Nah, I don't think so. I am not in a generous mood.

Finally, its Mansa's turn to ask:

ctiv9-AD1900-Mansa-ask.jpg

Huh? You must be kidding me. I would think hard even if you throw in the combustion ... and you expect me to give you Electricity for 1000gold? Ha!

Plus I believe ChrTh said: "Don't trade with Mansa" :old: .

I made a detour from Railraod to Democracy, before heading for Industrialism: This is because we need Emancipation, cities are starting to get angry. After getting Democracy, here is the revolution:

ctiv9-AD1888-revolt.jpg

Although I was tempted to move to UniSuff for the hammer and ability to rush, I resisted. Firstly, it will cause 1 more turn of anarchy. Secondly, and more importantly, I suspect we couldn't afford to leave Hereditary Rule as yet ... the unhappiness would kill us. For that, I have started Broadway in Ptah. I would also suggest building some temples in those high-unhappiness cities in preparation for the revolt to UniSuff.

You wondering why we need to go to UniSuff? My, for the extra hammers, of-course!

Wealth? :undecide: ... I think I'd rather build troops, even if it causes us to reduce Science. I don't trust the AI.

How close are we to Apollo?

After Broadway comes in, let's figure out our happiness situation. I'd like to be able to cash-rush Space Elevator and/or 3 Gorges so we'll want UniSuff for that too.

Apollo is due like close to 16 turns ... if we are lucky enough to have Aluminium in one of the mines that we already have, it would be reduced to half.

I am not too worried abt war right now, we are #2 in power, remember? Plus we have tons of axemans and archers ready to undergo intensive gun-powder training ... and those needs money too.

The main point is to leverage our strength. We have academies all over the place, so going 90% science when you can do 100% science is simply wasting your academies.

Well put, Professor. I will defer to your position.

Dude, we're FOURTH in power! Not only that, HC outnumbers us 4 to 1! And we have half the number of soldiers of the Rival Average. Upgrading won't help in that situation.

This requires a :gripe:

Sorry chaps, RL is going to get in the way tonight...I've got a video to render that'll take about four hours, then I've got to knock out 27 copies onto DVD, so there's no way I'll have time to play tonight. Tomorrow night I'll be packing for me weekend away, so I've got to request a skip.

Skip times are in my sig.
