Cultivating a dose of Anglophilia!

Maybe a useful layout is to start your report with your intentions for the set (and reasons why); followed by the set report; followed by an analysis of how the set compared to your intentions; followed by your view of how the game should progress from that point.

Good idea. I've already played and put in a small speech about where the game could go from the end. Didn't put a preamble in though, maybe next time.

This is a challenging thread. Seems to be because there are so many ways to attempt the cultural victory.

If ever there was a case for discussion of strategy before the turnset, this is it.

Then our voting would be more informed. I look at it this way, we may not all play a best ball culture victory again for a while, so we might as well learn as much as possible from each other while we are here.

Me personally, I'm going to look for a GA farm, build some cottages, and get some catapults ready for Mao in case he attacks. Sistine soon !

Have the pyramids gone?

Kmad: Completely right, it's a game and if its not fun for you then don't play.

Perhaps we can just put this episode behind us (again), and KMadCandy is invited to reconsider her stance. If not - it's a shame.

Here is my save.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/61698/Elizabeth_the_Cultured_jevind_AD-1000.CivWarlordsSave

Spoiler :
My goals were:
Make friends with Washington.
Prepare for possible attack by Mao.
Build up our military strength, which is inadequate with such a neighbour to the south.

175: Trade deal fish-spices with Mao. However...
200 AD: Mao declares war, so that deal was a shortlived one.
I relased our GA in Neapolis for culture bomb. It was that or lose the city to Washington.
Converted to Buddhism.
275 AD: GL built in a distant land.
350 AD: Washington hates Mao, warns me against him. Good news, that.
425 AD: Sistine Chapel built in York. Meanwhile, Mao's troops are rampaging in a lot of places. Fortunately, it has not occurred to him to land troops outside Rome. Maybe he doesn't have galleys? Hmm...
G. Scientist born in London. I used him to discover Paper. Hoping to build U. of Sankore in London.
Traded Theology to Washington for Calender + World Map + 140 gold.
Introduced OR - our economy is bad, but I didn't have to lower the research rate for this, and it does increase the rate at which you build things.
780: Traded Paper to Wash for Currency + 20 gold. That may cost us the U. of Sankore, but Currency is very needed. I mean to run Research in a couple of cities soon (London, certainly), and set Neapolis to generate Money.
960: GA born in York.
1000 AD: Mao (Annoyed) demanded we break with Wash. I said no.

Commentary: I actually forgot to mention that I bought a cease fire from Mao for Theology. Hopefully, we'll be in better shape to resist a new invasion. I traded away things like mad to Washington out of necessity. I am due to discover feudalism next turn and hope to sell it to Wash. Also, building Longbowmen will help against Mao. If I am any judge, he'll attack again soon.
N. Epic will be built in York as soon as library is finished there. H. Epic being built in the city with a resident GG. Should probably set Cumae to generate Culture as soon as that is possible; Mao destroyed the fishery outside the city, and now its borders are being pressed back by by Washington.
Good news is we have lots of luxuries: gold, dye, incense, wine, fur from Washington. Washington is Pleased with us and doesn't like Mao. Possible ally? He has horses, which could be helpful. I am trading Iron with him, which is a bit of a gamble but may pay off. We have Stone because of the culture bomb I released in Neapolis. perhaps we could get washington's horses by releasing the new GA in York.
Mao will attack again soon, methinks. Stand by to build lots of spearmen against his horsemen and longbowmen to defend our cities!

I'd like to advise that our lurker has agreed to step up to the plate!

mrchadt has agreed to join our roster. :high5:

This does not preclude KMadCandy from coming back if she wishes.

Hello everyone, I'm mrchadt from England. Thanyou for allowing me to join in. I've not won a cultural victory before so please take that into consderation.

Spoiler :
I played from 125AD to 1000AD. I had read the spoilers and played a couple of turns before being invited to join so I knew that mao was coming. So maybe my save isn't legit. But it didn't make much difference to the outcome. I will write a briefing on my activities and plans and post it with my save tomorrow if it's wanted.

Hi! :) You are welcome. And I think your save is legit.

:nono: - I think that there's value in seeing mrchadt's game, but it shouldn't be up for voting contention in this round if he's looked at the spoilers. If mrchadt wants to write up a report and so forth, that would be super :), but I think that it's not 'a level playing surface' in this instance.

Oops! Sorry.

Thanks for your support Öjevind Lång but I would side with Cam_H and say that it wasn't on a level playing field. I played it to get an idea of what is going on so I could judge the other saves better and play the next round knowing the terrain. Any way for those interested here it is. I've not done a succession game before or much reporting.
Spoiler :
My plan was to get drama so I could bulb music for the free artist, so I changed that.
I also wanted to get the GL asap so I fired specialists set them to work in the hills and started chopping trees around the capital.
I open border with washington, I want to make him my friend as I know mao will not be. I gift cows and poly, I want to be able to trade theology with him.
I traded theology with mao for calander, not great as he was comming to kill me.
moa declares. I raise raise his rice city in the north with axemen on their way to defend( I think these guys had a bit of a premonition, but in first look at save I was moving them back as they wern't enough to take barb city alone.)
I build GL, but miss the Sistine chapel get 500gold which is very good for reaeach, for anything other then a cultural game and I would be happy.
Great scientist bulbs philosophy.
drama for peace with mao.
change to hindu and pasifism.
hereditatry rule plus 120 from wash for theology.
lit to mao 150 to wash 100, music for construction to someone.
Great prophet makes a profit building the buda shrine.
change to buda. for relations with GW.
Unfortunately mao got the nice bard city in the south, I think I should have made an effort for this as it is very nice.
bulbed half of education, I think liberalism is 20 turns away and worth it.
Settled 2 GA in city that was building chapel, I think I would have built it if I had really concentrated on its importance, I was building triems for defense.
I lost my way here and there in trying for a cultural victiory. There are 4 cities which seem good for money/food/culture. I don't know which 3 are best. I think I should have concentrated on spreading religion more by building monasteries and missionaries.
I don't know if I could get a cultural victory from it as the threat from mao is very great, I think he needs to be silenced. Maybe beline to rifles draft lots and cripple him then concentrate on culture.

Welcome mrchadt from England!

I'll sum my attempt here: Retired. Yeah, yeah. I know. I'm a chicken. So sue me! ;)

If you still want the details...
Spoiler :
I changed research to Currency and mm'ed the cities for more commerce. Could get in the black with 50% science.
Lost the Great Library (this is getting annoying) but got Sistine. But that's not the point. Even before the wonders, Mao declared. I swapped some cities to trirremes and was able to sink all the ships I attacked. Mao took Notthingan (?) with a Cho-ko-nu and a HA. I was moving some axes down there. With a force of 4 axes, i parked just outside the city. After Currency, went construction for catapults, while building spears for all those HA. When I thought I was ready, Mao sent all the horde against the axes, killing them. No catapults could see action and the HA's were winning against fortified spears on a hill. I guess my machine wasn't in a good mood yesterday... Oh, btw, this was around 800 AD. I foresaw the loss of York and then a culture victory would be "impossible".

I learned two things from this set:
1- I still can't handle Monarch!
2- I still can play civ, even having a new toy!

So, I'll stay on the roster, if you still want me to. I thought about leaving, but it'll be good for me to play civ once a week. I don't want to abandon the game. This community keeps me sane during work. ;) I'll just be almost as stagnated as York was. :p

I think London, York and Antium are probably the cities we should go for as culture win cities.

On another tack: FeedBack, please stay on the roster!

All righty then, as I understand it we're waiting for Pigswill and Mice.

It's Saturday morning here in Australié, so if you guys are in a position to at least (a.) post your submissions, or (b.) advise of your non-participation in this round within the next few hours, it would be appreciated. Better yet, post your submissions and support them with a comprehensive report on what happened and some insight on where your games are respectively going. :)

And FBel - you are a 'required player' ... enough of that talk! :nono: ;)

Just call me Öjevind - or Ojevind, if your keyboard has problems with Scandinavian letters. :)

Culture wins are very hard to achieve - perhaps that's why I crave winning them so much. (That and hating constant warfare or going for the space victory all the time.) I also seem to be completely out of my depth when it comes to Monarch games. Still, we have some very seasoned gamers in the team, so I, for one, will just submit my games and enjoy the ride... (I did try pretty hard this round, though.)

OK sorry about the delay. Save coming right up.
