There is some doubt about Pele's record:
He claimed to have scored 1000+ 'first class' goals. 'First class' is usually taken to mean either competitive Internationals or when playing in the topmost league of your country. I don't know the facts but some people claim Pele included friendlies and non-top-league matches.
Not that it matters - Pele was the ultimate footballer and also coined the phrase 'the beautiful game'. Good enough for me.
Tostao? Nope.
Another clue - he sounds like he should be playing for a completely different country in the Mediterranean - not only that, but about 2,000 years ago.
Here's an easy one::
The Brazilian league started to be called that way in 1972. In 1997, one player scored 29 goals in a single season, breaking the previous record. Who is he?
Indeed, I made it too easy in the end but the quiz must go on. But what a great name, I just remember one commentator saying something like "the brilliant, chain-smoking Doctor Socrates" and I fell about laughing. Too cool!
