Excluding European colonies and pre-Columbian native empires, the only two Empires in I can think of are the Empire of Brazil of Pedro I and Pedro II (1822-1889); and the short-lived Empire of Mexico of Augustin Inturbide I (1822-1823).

Are there any other "legitimate" empires?

There's one more

And mexico had two Empire periods. The other one was in 1860 with Maximilian I

shot in the dark:

Was Paraguay ever an empire - especially when they got their butts handed to them in the War of the Triple Alliance? (1870's I think).

Az, are you going for the Inca as the third empire?

One of the reasons why I used the word "legitimate" in my answer; Juarez remained President-in-Opposition -- needless to say, Mexican history does not recognize Maximilian's reign (nor, needless to say, did Lincoln -- though similar but obverse to the Zimmerman Episode, Jeff Davis and the C.S.A. did. On the other hand, initially, the U.K. adopted a typical "wait and see and what may be our best interests" attitude). ...

Wait a second, it's starting to ring a bell for the third Empire ... I'm thinking to guess Haiti ... just let me look it up. ... YES!!!!

Jean-Jacques Dessalines made himself Emperor of Haiti ... (Should have been L'Ouverteur; that was my first guess for the Emporer).

Is that the third "Empire" that you were thinking of?

If correct: A question customized for you, AZ

. Having played a national bar trivia game tonight with the topic of Athens, Greece -- and having helped my local watering-hole attain 7th in the nation -- a question I missed in the heat of competition, and a question I missed by a mile (or stade):

The "Parthenon," the magnificent structure atop the Acropolis that has inspired Western Civilization for centuries, means/(is named after): WHAT!!!

Duke o' York

That sounds like one hell of a better explanation/answer than that provided by the NTN Network!

If I was right on Haiti being the third Empire of the Americas, then, having answered my presumptive question, next question should be yours!

Hmmm.... <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/cwm40.gif" border=0>
Another easy one, I'm afraid:

# 16. Who is believed to have discovered the ruins of Troy? Both names please.<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/grad.gif" border=0>

Edit: D'oh - forgot to number it.

What do you mean by 'believed'. Was he wrong or something, or is it just not proven yet?
