Cumulative PM-based History Quiz III

Capital! I have a few books myself, but some of them are used beyond recognition, while a large part has been lost during the years for various reasons.
Do you mind telling me where you found the expalnations on all those Victorian slang words (if they were not taken directly from your head, that is.

As a matter of fact, you'd better do that yourself after your recent famous display.
58 p, gentlemen! 58! :hatsoff::hatsoff::hatsoff:
Also 2 more p to Atticus.

A book some what about Sherlock Holmes that talked about the era (I have 10K+ books probably wont be able to find it again, I have my 50 favorite by my bedside :))

No, every source is forbidden, either internet or written material. You did the mistake to "confess" your "crime".
When in doubt, remember; ask first, shoot later.

Then I must also confess I also used a 'little help' online to come up with my answers. If there are others who can say they didn't use any sources, they can take the plunge.

lol, I have a feeling many people will start confessing

That's a fair cop.

Quite so.

I hope not. Wouldn't be overcome by joy then.
This is quite simple, gentlemen. If research were allowed, virtually everybody would get a clean score, as most people here know how to use google and such.
Actually we had a quiz some time ago where research was allowed, but that one did not turn out to be a success.

Considering the unfortunate situation and the fact that I will be off to Sweden tomorrow and only return on the 12th, I have decided to extend the deadline until the 17th. In that way other interested might be able to participate, and we will establish if any of the other who already submitted have something to confess.

One of the reasons I like picture quizzes is because they're difficult to google. For example, if I ask a question where one of the clues is a picture of Tsushima Island, you'd pretty much have to know (or at least strongly suspect) the answer just to check out that it is indeed Tsushima Island. Coats of arms tend to work better than flags.

Researchable quizzes tend to have a lot of pictures for that reason. I do well on some of them because I know a little heraldry, and they tend to have coats of arms. Quotations don't work as well unless you have a source somewhere that has never been put on the Internet.* Pictures of Saints are hard as hell to guess, and I always enjoy figuring them out.

*For instance, I spent several hours trying find the original of the quote that goes with Bronze Working in Civ IV. (For a Civ IV forum, not a quiz.) I knew it was Homer, figured it was the Iliad since it sounded bloodthirsty, but none of the places that have that exact quote said who the translator was. Someone supplied the next line of the quote, and I finally found an alternate version in a text file different translation. (It's in book XXII, around at the end of the fourth paragraph in Butler's translation.) I still haven't found who did the translation with the exact quote; it's possible someone cleaned up Taylor's version. Tracking down something like that is my idea of fun.

what does fair cop mean? (I have so many books because I read at about 150 pages an hour)

Wow... and I thought I was fast with about 100 pages per hour! :goodjob:

Edit: Submitted my answers - though I'm no danger for the current front-runners, that quiz is quite challenging w/o research, IMO.

most of my "research" was double checking like for example, I remembered most of the Victorian ones, but I double checked to make sure it was right

My reference to research had nothing to do with you, sorry - I was just saying I found the answers quite challenging.

My quote was about your speed reading, I didn't realize the edit might look as if it was referencing you as well.

Well, I often submit answers that I don't know, but I guess, sometimes from elimination.
Like question with numbers on a map and different places to identify.

Also, we shouldn't allow to submit new asnwers after the first one, as you then know where are your errors and can attempt to correct.

It's not really easy to find the correct limit.

It's a question of honour IMHO. No fun winning if you know that you've 'cheated'.

Yeah, I generally give myself the one chance at a multiple choice or numbered map question and don't try a second time.

I think checking your answers before you submit them counts as "research" and isn't permitted - unless, of course, you submit even the answers that you find to be wrong.

even if you're spell checking? (I spell checked the Mesopotamian ones)

So I am finally back after some lovely days in the capital of Scandinavia, and ready to wrap this up.

Did you ever watch Monty Python?:D

All you say is fine, but personally I rarely find myself in the situation where I can spend hours contemplating one image. I suppose many others are in the same situation, and that could easily be the main reason that quiz never was a great success.

And I finally returned to check it. You got the decent score of 20 p, which accidently also greekguy did.

That sounds correct.

Can't agree with that.
In my not so humble here are a number of legitimate reasons for this.

It's a question of honour IMHO. No fun winning if you know that you've 'cheated'.
True that. Part of the fun is to find out how much you really know and how good you are at qulified guesses. Not the least that actually, I have done it with a lot of success in the past.

Even if I have the sharpest ---- in London as an avatar, I am not in the grammar- and spelling police branch.
Usually I don't mind exotic spellings on people or geographical locations unless there are the case of ambiguity. In that case I'll just ask for clarification.
I haven't received any more confession from repentant sinners, so i reckon that yeekim is the current legitimate leader. but mind you, there are still a few days to change that.

okay, I'm waiting for a new quiz, now I'm reading a book titled "Safe for Democracy: The secret wars of the CIA" rather interesting actually

I am supposed to celebrate my birthday in a couple of hours, so I officially close the quiz this very moment.

Final scoreboard:
Yeekim 47
sydhe 44
BananaLee 26
Dragonlord 22
Atticus 20
greekguy 20
innonimatu 20
Plotinus 14
dutchfire 8
DONIMATRIX 6

In addition, two participants who got disqualified for using aid:
vogtmurr 58
civ_king 49

So the winner is Yeekim, who apart from the congratulations of yours truly, also gets the pleasure to make the next quiz.
Unfortunately I am to be hospitalised on Wednesday, but I will try to get the answers with some additional information posted tomorrow.

congrats to Yeekim, and congrats to Richard Cribb (why are you being hospitalized?)

Thank you, sir.
Something with my liver, apparently. Probably a sort of hepatitis. It remains to be sorted out how serious.
Mind you, this is not due to any excessive consumption of alcohol nor too lavish alimentaries, but an after effect of a nasty viral infection I had a couple of years ago.
