At the turn of the 4th century the Roman emperor made all his legions pay homage to " the gods " by bowing to their eagle standards. The Theban legion was all christians and refused--they were decimated, asked, refused, decimated again. Finally after a third time they and their commander (Mauritius ) were all put to death. Mauritius is now St. Maurice 2/7

The zimmermann note--The existance of a german note offering mexico all of her lands lost to the U.S. in 1848 if she joined Germany leaked out. Tensions grew between the U.S. and Mexicio and pushed the U.S. that much closer to joining the allies. 6/7

In WW II a German u-boat torpedod a British ship, it turned out to be a hospital ship carring 1800 British wounded and Italian prisioners. The u-boat put its few lifeboats out to them and called several more u-boats to help. They even called a nearby allied base offering a truce so they allies could come put up the suviviors. The allies thought it a ruse and refused and 1 base send bombers to attack the u-boats. He was commenting how the Swedes had lost their " invincibility " at Nordligen when they broke and ran, while the Spanish kept their honor but had to die to do it 0/7

Here are my questions:

1. We had the outbreak of the German- Franco war 1870 in the last turn by pawpaw. What was the reason for the "Emser Depesche"?

2. Who was Shogun in the time the Mongols tried to invade Japan?

3. To Roman law a man could become slave when he was captured by enemies. However this was only possible by foreign nations and these nations had to be recognized in some way. In the height of the Imperium Romanum only 2 enemies were recognized to do so. Name them! Be aware, one of them was no nation in the sense of an empire like Rome or Carthago.

4. An easy one: Napoleon counted out the 7 generals who he thought were the great captains. He once stood at the grave of one of them saying: If you was alive I wouldn´t be here!" Who´s grave was it. Bonus: Where is this person lying now?

5. Which pope introduced the celibate into the church?

6. Emperor Charles V. of Germany was also king of Spain. Under his reign one Spanish colony was given to Germans. Which colony was it? Bonus: Who were these Germans?

7. Who was the first Russian Czar?

8. Mac Arthur had to leave the Philipines 1942. What did he use to do so?

9. Who were the first Europeans to discover Australia?

10. The HMS Beagle was an important warship, but much more to science than to a heroic fight. Why?

Good luck!

Edited I.: Loulong for researching an answer.

1. We had the outbreak of the German- Franco war 1870 in the last turn by pawpaw. What was the reason for the "Emser Depesche"?
The French Minister for foreign affairs ordered his ambassador in Prussia to follow the Prussian king into holidays. France was in a crise, Napoleon III. had to be very aware not to lose the crown. So it would be a fantastic PR if the Prussians would be humiliated a bit. However Wilhelm rejected the demandments of the French ambassador and sent at once a telegram to Berlin. Bismarck edited it a bit by deleting some words. This lead to war...

2. Who was Shogun in the time the Mongols tried to invade Japan?
Bakufu and Tokimune fron the Hojo- family.

In the height of the Roman empire the Partians/ Perser and the Germans were the only ones which were recognized as foreign nations by the Romans. Carthago was already history as well as Egypt.

4. An easy one: Napoleon counted out the 7 generals who he thought were the great captains. He once stood at the grave of one of them saying: If you was alive I wouldn´t be here!" Who´s grave was it. Bonus: Where is this person lying now?
I thought it was an easy question but most of you got this wrong. It was Frederic the Great. He stood at his sarkophag in the garrison church of Potsdam and said that. Frederic was for over 200 years not allowed to find the eternal peace at his place of choice. In 1991 however he was burried in Sanssouci, his Palais in Potsdam.

5. Which pope introduced the celibate into the church?
Gregor VII.

6. Emperor Charles V. of Germany was also king of Spain. Under his reign one Spanish colony was given to Germans. Which colony was it? Bonus: Who were these Germans?
Venezuela. The Welser family of Augsburg.

7. Who was the first Russian Czar?
Ivan IV., the terrible. This should have been an easy question. However many of you were wrong.

8. Mac Arthur had to leave the Philipines 1942. What did he use to do so?
At first a submarine, then a PT boat.

9. Who were the first Europeans to discover Australia?
The Dutch, but they kept it secret.

10. The HMS Beagle was an important warship, but much more to science than to a heroic fight. Why?
It was Darwin´s ship. One of you was not knowing that!

All in all pawpaw has the most points. It is your turn.

P.S.: Thanks to Loulong I had to correct a mistyping here. However this had no consequences on the result.

Should have fought of that but guessed it was a political donation not just a financial take over as warranty....

You are wrong here. First Ivan the Terrible was Ivan IV, not II.

Besides Ivan III married a Byzantine then called himself Czar of all Russia.
The real crowning ceremony system indeed started with Ivan the IVth but the name started with Ivan III.

I have gotten least answers right in enough quizzes already. I don't need to embarass myself further, especially when I can't muster enough decent guesses to take the lead even if all my guesses were right. And they wouldn't be.
