Actually, still today, the sun never sets on the French Republic. Not very hard knowing the locations of Guadeloupe, Réunion, or French Polynesia. :p

question #1 seems to be causing alot of confusion.

to clarify:
this is not a nation with colonies, or things which are similar to colonies. Guadeloupe, Réunion, or French Polynesia, for the purposes of this question, qualify as colonies. As do places like Bermuda, or Gibralter. Hence, for this reason, I can tell you that Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, and other such nations, do therefore not qualify.

also, I am looking for a nation. I've had people suggest things like Atilla the Hun, who's empire did indeed stretch the needed length, but who's "empire" was nothing close to a county as we'd recogonize it today.

there IS an answer. getting the right country gets you half points, getting the date gets you the other half.

5 people have sent in responces so far - I havent totaled their points due to this question. I've PMed some, telling them they can resubmit their answers for this question.

most people got half points for this one - Russia
most people forgot that before the end of WW1, poland was a part of russia!! so the answer is Russia prior to WW1

2-When Adolf Hitler died, who officially became ruler of Germany, and what position had he held until that point.

Karl Donetz, the former Naval Chief. I think only one person got it

3-George Washington was not made President of the United States untill 1789, yet the decleration of Independence was signed in 1775. Part of these 14 years was taken up with the war for independence, but that ended in 1783. - what happened for the remaining 6 years?

The articles of Confederation.

4-What is the oldest political party in the world which is still active? (for example, roman or greek political parties would have died out by now, what party that's still active is oldest, is another way of asking)

by my records, the British Tory party, though while researching, the Liberal party in Britain can argue that, but since no one guess the Liberals, no problem.

5-What large european nation was partly dismembered in 1772. What was this process called?

Poland, in the FIRST partation!

6-In 1775, the 13 colonies of the United States declared independence. At this time, there were, in fact, 19 colonies in the area. Name the 6 which stayed out of this, and their status as of today.

Newfoundland, Nova Scotia (which included NB at this time), Quebec, (which included ontario and ohio at this time) Prince Edward Island (or Saint Johns Island) West Florida, and East Florida. if you guessed any of these you got half points, no one got full points.

7-There is a canadian province named after Prince Edward. What happened to this Prince Edward after the province was named after him?

Fathered queen victoria

8-What settlement/city is the longest continuously settled settlement on earth

Damascus by my books. some of you presented an answer "well, some say Damascus, but I say..." if you did that, I gave you full points.

9-What 4 letter abbreivation was used in the early roman republic to represent the itself.

SPQR

10-Tutankamen was the ruler of what ancient nation.

the only one everyone got, as I intended. Egypt.

Congratulations PawPaw, looks like your the winner

Small nitpick

IIRC New Brunswick was split off from Nova Scotia after the influx of United Loyalists fleeing the US after the rebellion there.

I'd also say that there is no such thing as the British "Tory Party". There is the Conservative Party, the members of which are often referred to in a slightly derogatory way as "Tories" because of their historic links with the Tory faction in the eighteenth century. However, the Liberal Party cannot claim to be older, because it doesn't exist. The modern Liberal Democrat Party is the heir to the old Liberal Party but it was founded only about 15 years ago (off the top of my head).

Wasn't Damascus founded by the Arabs, or did they just pick the city as their capital?

I don't know, but I do seem to remember that it figures prominently in the Old Testament as the capital (?) of the Phillistines. Perhaps that's a different city, though...

both parties are clear modern day successors. just becuase the liberals merged with the SDP does not mean that the Liberal-Democrats came from nothing, both of it's halvs have a history.

anyways, I think we are waiting for PawPaw to post his questions. if he cannot do so for whatever reason, then in 48 hours, I beleive the responsibility will fall to North.
