That is a fine list. I like the parts about Republic, and then the sequence Explosive Engineers, Bach and Democracy.

A Question. Are we really planning to establish a Republic? It will reduce the number of disturbed population icons.

Please feel free to encourage me, Citizens.

In my games, the advent of Republic is a Great Leap Forward, a very Good Thing. :) It's usually a reason to celebrate! ;)

It's usually a boost to money and science but stalls expansion. The need to support troops and the increased support costs of settlers usually makes production drop becasue of the support and food is short because of the settlers.

Generally, the benefits outweight the shortfalls. As far as handling it within the game, we have plenty of people to help with ideas and ways to deal with the problems.

The first thing to do before we even get to Republic would be to check and see if any cities would be so hard hit by the support requirements that they would have to disband units to survive.

I agree with Duke and Octavian. Let's continue expansion as we prepare for eventual Republic. The actual government change would begin a period of consolidation and growth of existing cities.

Well ... we will be expanding forever, won't we? It is this indecision that concerns me. We are about to have Mike's and Leonardo, even Marco Polo. Then comes Bach, and how is the AI going to take that from us? I doubt they can.

My preference is to have the Caravans for Leonardo built, which btw they already are, then switch the Republic at the first available eodo year. No more waiting and worrying.

I just checked, no units will disband, other than some Udal and Fruit City units we must resolve ASAP anyway. A bit of stress in Neuma, MD, Reneaux. We really need to rehome a war unit in Elysium and RC.

The only question is, do we have the resolve?

I'm not saying it should be put off. I think if we are going to do it, the sooner the better. I just want to be sure everyone was ready for what will be ahead.

It will be different from the type of game people are use to up until now. Republic is considered so difficult by many Civ players because they can't maintain it. Many can't maintain it because they try to do too much when they first switch to it. It will be a period of much slower growth, but once we get to the point where we are stable in it, the production should increase to levels much higher than we have right now.

If the people don't feel ready for it, then it should be delayed. If they feel confident in our group, as a team, then we can get prepared for it and switch when the time feels right.

We have Mike's, we have decent infrastructure, we have our continent secured, we don't have any major wars going on. Those are the basic considerations. It sounds like adjustments need to be made to certain cities and then we should have no real problems switching.

One reason some have difficulty with Republic is the neglect of infrastructure in the form of Trade Routes. I consider the establishment of More Trade Routes as part of preparation for Republic/Democracy, and not merely routes between the biggest cities. Many "minor" cities will grow to size 8 through luxuries and celebration. The income from multiple trade routes per city adds to Science + Tax. Also, the more routes there are, the lower the lux rate needs to be to maintain order. This has been a big key for my own success with Republic.

Well, we are about to get a Trade Route going with Civvium, and another is recommended from MD to Elysium. I'm not sure MonkE views the MD Salt Caravan as Approved By The People. I've recommended several, and will continue. For example, sell the Uppsala Barracks, build Silver, rehome in Dellham or Ren.

The desire to build Marco Polo also detracts from Domestic Trade Routes. Has an AI already started to build Marco?

A High jolt of Luxuries will boost our Productivity, and the Trade Routes and Markets will follow.

I usually try to get to republic before I even deliver many caravans since the payoffs are quite a bit more than when in Monarchy.

If we wait until we are 'fully' prepared for Republic, it means we could have wasted lots of years of boosted gold and science. I have just grown accustom to the idea of a 'slowing' period while the Republic cranks up to full speed. Then, when that is very healthy (trade routes and such) I'll switch to Democracy and never look back.

This is a good discussion, based on the game experience of each individual. I would like to hear from as many people as possible here.

I tend to wait until I'm fully ready for republic but then realize that I could've made the switch a lot earlier. Waiting gives you less bad consequences, but they don't outweigh the benefits I could've gotten from republic during the time I was in monarchy. Still, I usually do the same mistake the following games:( (I'm a coward when it comes to switching to republic:p ). Recently I've been forcing myself to switch early, but haven't really been able to adjust myself to it, yet. Expansion stops, giving me less black guys who are essential for celebrating imo:( One of the reasons I joined this game was that I was interested in how other people played civilization, and therefore I think we should switch early if we think we can handle it.:)

I agree that if we go republic we should be absotely ready for it, as you have to be with democracy. Ive never used republic myself but I imagine it to be difficult to achieve expansion + conquest under this government because of the restraints on happiness.

I don't think we need Marco Polo's. It would of course be nice to have, but the resources would be better used on other things like marketplaces, libraries, crusaders, etc... Republic would certainly be a good idea considering all the happiness wonders we have.

I agree with Rout, we should go for Republic only if were absolutely ready for it.

I think I agree with everyone in this instance.

You see, I believe we are already absolutely ready for Repubic. We only lack the Science. Maybe you see something in particular we need to address, a unit to rehome or whatever?

Maybe a few more marketplaces to do some WLTKD and just generally improve our economy. But I agree we could switch to republic anytime now, but if we have a lot of things to produce and not enough trade squares to get a trade bonus that outweighs the production loss it could be better to wait just a little longer. I'll leave to someone else to do the calculations on that... That's also why I suggested attacking the vikings as soon as possible, with some luck we can capture a city or two before it's time to switch government and avoid some of the unit unhappiness.
