Current (SVN) development discussion thread

Wait: is it possible to use that ominous cheat with which you can switch Civs per shortcut? Don't really know about this, could anyone please give me a hand on how to do it?
If you have cheat mode active (chipotle), you can use Alt+Z to rotate through all civs.

Sorry to be persistent but I didn't hear any answers for my suggestions.
Belgrad should be Singidunum pre 700 a.d. and indpenedent or under Romans or Byzantines.
Should be Beograd after 700 a.d. and independent.
Should be Belgrad under Russians, Germans and Turks.
Should be Belgrado under the Spanish or Portuguese.
Should be Belgrade for everyone else.

Got this two times in my recent game (most recent SVN+blue marble, marathon).

I wonder why HRE flips Kopenhagen on start...is that intentional? Is this a result of making HRE settle more at North Sea and to make up for the loss of the Baltics?
And about that issue, I have a Prussian start (epic, emperor) and HRE again did not settle a coastal city in the North. Going to check this again tomorrow with an American start.
Also, Belgrade was razed in every single start I tried today (4-5, epic and marathon, early=HRE and late=Prussia start).

Maybe the AI should also be encouraged to "clean" ruins. They usually never tend a tile with ruins on it, they just leave them be.

Latest SVN 389 Belgrad starts 2 population and does not get razed.

Seems like a religion spread to one of your cities. Do you know which city?

Hello,
this is my first time posting here. There is probably a simple answer for this, but I am not that savvy with all this internet stuff. I downloaded the suggested SVN program and used it to download the Dawn of Civilization SVN. Afterwards I tried to update my version to 389, and it says that I have. However, when I open the either of the public maps there is no Polish civilization listed. I've redone everything and updated again, and it always says I am version 389 but none of the changes listed under the last several versions are in my game...Any help?

Did you rename that folder you checked out to "RFC Dawn of Civilization"?

Yes, I did.

Think I figured it out. I had forgotten that there was a BtS folder with mods in my documents as well...

Something is wrong with civs getting a cultural modifier on core tiles, as Italy I control the tile East of Austrian Wien with the tile showing 42% Italian, 43% Holy Roman and 13% Polish. I control the tile North of Frankfurt with it showing 55% Italian, 3% French, 36% Holy Roman and 4% Dutch. I'm unintentionally strangling the HRE to death because I beat the second UHV.

EDIT: attached save keeps crashing

Just started a game with Russia - the text that introduces the Civ that shows when you are waiting to begin is the one for the Dutch.

Everything else seems fine so far... Was surprised to see Poland pop up! :D

Old news. Will be fixed later.

This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about.
I am playing as the Phoenicians.
My capital is Utica, in my Core.
When the Arabs spawn, they flip my capital in my core.

There really, really, REALLY needs to be an exception for human players.
If Human-controlled Phoenicia, Egypt, Babylon & Persia are still alive by the time of the Arabian/Turkish spawn, their cities in their CORE should be granted immunity from flipping.

EDIT: Wrong save.

Isn't it already the case that human Phoenicia gets to keep the Sur tile in the event they survive to see the Arabian spawn? You can already absolutely cripple Arabia by razing the cities in their flip zone. I don't see why you should also be able to cripple them further through clever capital placement. IMO a capital flip is the price you pay for non-standard placement. Something about cake and eating and so on and so forth.

TBH, I'd rather see Sur flip even if controlled by a human. If you're good enough and have the desire to play past a civ's "expiration date," by all means do so, but you should have to face the difficulties head on, I say.

I do agree about Shush, specifically, as IMO Arabia plays with better historicity if they get Egypt, the Levant, and Mesopotamia as flips, and has to fight for Persia (the Shush tile being, IMO, part of Persia). Otherwise, let the flips commence!

I feel like that one tile is specifically excluded if Phoenicia is human-controlled. At least, I seem to recall something like that for Egypt and I assume it's true for Phoenicia as well. I've had bigger lapses of memory, so if it's not true, I apologize. I think the capital should flip regardless.

I think AI attitudes towards vassalization need some tweaking.
Some AIs will be on the verge of death and they refuse to capitulate or run into your arms for help (Russia & China come to mind).

The only vassals I have ever been able to get save for one game where I was able to peace-vassal Byzantium & Russia, are the following:

-Mesoamerican civs
-Ethiopia
-Egypt (with alarming regularity)
-Phoenicia (The only capitulation I've ever gotten)
-sometimes England.

But when England does become a vassal, it notoriously hoards tech like crazy.
It won't even trade something away (usually low-priority techs too) when you've got 4 or 5 techs to give them.
I've noticed it's the case with others too. It is incredibly difficult to fish tech from them.

We need AIs to be able to call on your help if they're suffering,
and they also need to be able to capitulate and peace vassal easier,
while the easy ones (aforementioned) should be bumped up harder like what you seem to have done with Mali.
(Mali seems to never surrender and will refuse to capitulate/vassalize even if they're dying).

There also seems to be a double-standard going on.
Often-times, I will be first in Score and Power and not at War.
But when a respawned civ resurrects and I have Pleased relations with them,
they don't vassalize to me, but they vassalize on the very same turn to someone else.
(This usually happens between Russia & Mongols)

So I wanted to address this and hear what you think about it, Leoreth.

That's strange. I seem to get Vassalization offers all the time. Khmer, Indonesia, Korea, Portugal, Italy, and Iran seem to want my protection quite often. I've also had a good number of offers from other civs that are usually strong but have either just resurrected or been beaten in a war. My last Spain game saw China come calling after its respawn, while in my most recent Viking game the Spanish got crushed by the French and made me an offer.

You do have a point about strange double-standards, though. And some civs, notably Mali (as you said) and Thailand, seem to stay independent way more often than they should, despite being backwards and tiny. And I definitely agree that civs should be more strategic when making vassalization offers; if they're at peace and don't see any immediate threats, they should stay independent unless they're seriously lagging. But when they're at war they should get smart and seek a viable protector. I admit that might be a lot to ask of an AI, though.

And it is annoying that friendly vassals are so tech-stingy. I mean, I get it, they shouldn't just give them away for free, but if I go through the trouble of getting a vassal and getting them up to speed technologically, I should get some sort of tech reward.
