Using God's name in vain is different than saying "hell" or "damn." God's name is holy, Satan's isn't.

Punishment may not come, during life.

Then why, on your theory, should any one judge others if all punishment will come in the afterlife?

Judging people is to prevent harm. Of course, punishment is not acceptable.

So you're saying their should be no criminal system, and we should therefore just be a lawless anarchy?

I wouldn't call that punishment. I would call that a judgment call.

Isn't it a sin to curse? If its an atheist I doubt they would care, and when it comes to religious people, well they simply hate atheists for just being atheists so it doesn't really matter.

I don't hate atheists. I doubt many religious people here do.

If I hated athiests, why would I debate religion on a forum like this? :p

Heh, anyway, this is a difficult one for me, as I do curse, although not at God (generally its because of a situation). I try to mitigate it as much as I can for the sake of my wife and kids; but sometimes one slips out like I have touretts syndrome or something.

To be honest, being a senior sergeant in the military sure doesnt help. I just hope and pray God's mercy will cover me for the instances in which I forget to ask for forgiveness.

While I am certainly capable of eloquence, in most regular conversation I swear like all hell (pun, no?). When talking with friends it's mostly for comedic effect. Let's face it, when done right, swearing is hillarious! Just ask Robin Williams or Richard Pryor.

I also do it when angry. I never really aim it at a certain person, just at the situation in general. When I do swear at someone it's mostly in a joking/teasing manner.

...

To the OP:

"Goddamnit" isn't really a curse at god, it's a request. You are asking god to damn something which you don't like. I hardly see how that could offend god. To say that is to recognize that he has power, and that you would like him to make use of that power to fix an unfortunate person/thing/situation. It's more like a prayer than anything, in my view.

Then again, I'm probably one of the more profanity-immune people of this planet. I just don't see why it's a big deal.

Mandatory Monty Python, Life of Brian Quote

OFFICIAL: You have been found guilty by the elders of the town of uttering the name of our Lord, and so, as a blasphemer,...

CROWD: Ooooh!

OFFICIAL: ...you are to be stoned to death.

...

MATTHIAS: Look. I don't think it ought to be blasphemy, just saying 'Jehovah'.

CROWD: Oooh! He said it again! Oooh!...

OFFICIAL: You're only making it worse for yourself!

MATTHIAS: Making it worse?! How could it be worse?! Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!

It is not the words that are important but the actions.
