Major Forum Upgrade This Weekend

.... the upgrade process is expected to take the whole weekend to complete.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you could PM the player in front of you your e-mail address it may help to keep the game going while the forum is down.

I got it.

I'm also up in EOC2 and I'll need a quick refresh of this one before I play, but I'll do my best to get the turns in tonight.

At any rate, I got the PM.

Who the hell is Trajan?

Looking at units, we have two galleys and 1 treb. Not much so far for the invasion force, huh? The good news is that we have 29 legions, which should be adequate defenders.

Science is turned off, making 78 gpt.

MM looks pretty good, except Rome was about to riot, and I find an elite legion in Brundisium. Do we not like leaders?

IT – Veii knight -> knight. Neapolis treb -> knight. Hispalis knight -> knight. Greeks begin Smith’s, Arabs begin Leos.

360 ad (1) – Battle of Hattusas: Cat hits vet spear. Vet legion rl vet spear but falls. Same thing again. Finally! Our vet legion wins and promotes vs vet spear. Vet legion wins vs rl vet spear. One unit left, our 3/5 elite vs rl vet spear, and we lose 2 hp but win. Hmmm, what’s this? Now why oh why would I want to rename this unit. Oh well, rename him Cuivienen for our fearless leader. Hattusas falls, giving us control of the Colossus. Now what to do with this funny looking Trajan guy? I guess I’ll make an army for future use. :p Elite legion loses vs vet archer!!!!! Vet leg wins vs vet sword. Elite sword takes revenge on archer for his fallen brother. We now have a single rl sword on our island, who will be used for elite fodder next turn.

IT – Cumae market -> treb. Lugdunum galley -> galley. Mongols building Leos, Japs building Magellans and Smith’s.

370 ad (2) – Elite leg wins vs rl sword. The Hittites generously offer all their kingdom for their lives. Well, all except the capitol, of course, but I think they’d give it if they could. I generously accept.

IT – Paris completes Cops. French go to Mags. Thebes finishes Leos. Egypt building Bach’s and Smith’s and Mags.

380 ad (3) – start reorganizing troops and shuttling defenders to new cities.

IT – Cleo comes to renew peace. Fine, just go away. Viro galley -> galley. English building smiths and Mags, and establishes an embassy with us. OK, there are way too many wonder pop ups happening here. From now on, I’ll only report completions.

390 ad (4) – Zzzz

IT – Cleo wants to renew the wines deal, I get WM + 7gpt. Pompeii knight -> knight. Hattusha galley -> galley.

400 ad (5) – Decide to import some fine Arabian ivory to combat the happiness problems I’m having. Costs wines +11 gpt. An odd thing I’ll ask about in the next post happened.

IT – Rome knight -> treb. Cumae treb -> treb. Brundisium lib -> barracks.

410 ad (6) – Fire clowns in Pompeii, Rome, and Veii.

IT - knight -> knight. Lugdunum galley -> galley. Lutetia market -> galley. Byzantium knight -> lib.

420 ad (7) - Watching the little men go where I told them to.

IT – Veii knight -> treb. Neapolis knight -> treb. Ravenna market -> barracks. Viroconium galley -> galley.

430 ad (8) – Zzzzz

IT – Rome treb -> knight.

440 ad (9) – starting to amass a respectable force here.

IT – Cumae treb -> aque. Hieranconpolis lib -> barracks. Enlish have built Smith’s. Two birds with one stone, now. :goodjob:

450 ad (10) – Well, the beginning of my turns was exciting at least.

We now have half dozen each of galleys and trebs. 8-9 knights. More of each on the way. I left science off as I figured we’ll be wasting money with the research. Despotism is killing us, but I also figured that we didn’t want to waste the 6-8 turns of anarchy we’ll probably draw. As soon as our troops depart on their noble journey, however, we need to revolt. Any troops that are on go to orders are headed towards their appropriate stack near Rome. We have 4 elite legions, so we have a decent chance at another leader or two. We have 1118 gold, currently at +148gpt. It really bites having to pop rush still, I’m waiting for those Hittite cites to flip back. Really need that revolt ASAP ……

The odd thing from turn 5? Aren't luxuries all supposed to have the same value?

And then this:

EDIT -- Dammit, I took the screenshot at the wrong time, but I do have the save and he did take the second deal.

Great we've got a leader! This will ensure our taking London.

I would have revolted immediately at the beginning of your turns (I actually mentioned this in bold fonts). It would not have increased the time to invade England as we could cash rush knights and galleys. But since you didn't, maybe we can wait until the forces are ready.

We can fill one knight into the army and fill the rest two after landing. We could establish an embassy with England to see exactly how many units are there. With the army we could probably start earlier.

Don't forget building pikes. We actually need to hold London for one turn.

Got it.

@Microbe -- yup, I see the revolt thing now. As I said, I basically didn't want to waste the turns of production, but I suppose you're right with the cash rushing.

Also, I believe we can now just investigate the city when we need to as the English established an Embassy with us.

Third, why do we need pikes, except possibly for later upgrade? We'll have a bunch of knights, which have the same defense and will be more versatile for our plan.

Lastly, any of you guys know why the luxuries trade happened like it did?

Third, why do we need pikes, except possibly for later upgrade? We'll have a bunch of knights, which have the same defense and will be more versatile for our plan.

But pikes are much cheaper.

If the bottleneck is boats, we could build all knights, otherwise, building some pikes might be faster. I haven't seen the save so it's just a general comment.

Investigation sounds good.

Personally, I doubt the English, with only 6 cities, will be able to launchy an effective counterattack in a single turn. Knights can hold the city if it attacked, and, looking at the picture, I don't think England even has Horses -- which means no counterattacks the turn we take London.

Save and log e-mailed to mocrobe during downtime.
450AD
Do a a little city management to shave turns off builds and swap a few barracks to either libraries or marketplaces.

@Sesn: here's an example of the science conversion ratio I referred to somewhere. If I raise science to 10% gpt drops by 26 but only 23gpt show up in the science row, so though expenses have risen by 26 the amount going to science is only 23 for a beaker rate of 23pt for an 88% conversion rate. That is primarily the effect of the Hittite towns with populations of 1 and no libraries. If I raise science to 100% then our income drops by 206 but the beaker rate rises to 231. The library mulitplier acts in the towns with libraries and the conversion rate is 1.12 beakers for every 1 gold.

Otherwise alles in ordnung.

Start courtesy calls on the other nations.

Joan will spend her WM and 71g+3gpt for spices
Toku wants our wines for his WM, must be printed on yak parcment with gilt ink
Abu will buy spices for 34g
Elizabeth will spend 10gpt for wines
Greece and Hittites are broke
Egypt will spend 265g for spices.

Start the trading round with Egypt(spices) 265g 0gpt WM
England gets wines 0g 10gpt WM
Joan gets wines 71g 5gpt WM
England gets spices 10g 11gpt TM
England gets our WM 30g
Joan gets out WM 0g 2gpt

Open an embassy with Korea as getting to England will require crossing his coastal waters. Sign an RoP straight up and pay him 3gpt. He'll sell Invention for Chivalry and 250g. I figure it's time to start trading our way through the lower half of the tree.

iviewcapture_date_08_05_2004_time_21_10_27.jpg

Open another embassy with Egypt. It will take five turns to sail into her waters and the anarchy will last at least that long. At least the embassy is in place so we can sign an RoP when we need it
Revolution begins. Major cities are building cathedrals and where possible workers are chopping forests to accumulate shields so that something is produced during the anarchy

Run through the cities and hire taxmen, some clowns and a single scientist.

We draw six turns of anarchy.

T6 510
Sailing and forest chopping
Sumeria and England ally against the Greeks
T7 520
Sailing, sailing...
T8 530
Sailing some more

France joins in against the Greeks

T9-T10 540-550
Sailing some more. Reached the far end of Korea.
Three cities grew and rioted

We can get an RoP straight up from Egypt. She will also sell Gunpowder for 985g, or 940 from Korea.

Spices are an attractive buy to Japan for 103G and 4gpt.

All deals left for next leader.

Sail along whichever coast you choose and in about 5 turns lay the :hammer: down

Well I played 15 turns. :)

Good news: we're in Industrial Ages.
Bad news: our entire invasion troop is no more.

Preturn: looks good. We need more embassies. Spices+WM+125g to Greece for furs. Fire lots of specialists. No scientist - we will get everything from the GL.

IBT Mongols+England MA vs Greece.

(1)560AD: Nothing.

IBT sign RoP with Egypt otherwise she would kick us out.

(2)570AD: We are a Republic and making 227gpt!

Embassies:

Sumeria (109g): Ur size 9, one clown, building library in 2 turns. 1 musket and 3 pikes. Saltpeter/iron/horses. Culture 859.

I sign RoP with it for WM+25g+2gpt.

France (116g): Paris size 12, 4 lux, 7 spear, building a spear. NO RESOURCES. 20spt. Culture 1975 at 35cpt.

Hmm, just noticed culture victory is off.

Greece (114g): Athens size 10, 4 lux, 4 musketmen, building knights. Iron/horses. 16spt. Lots of improvements.

Greece is at war with France/England/Sumeria/Egypt.

MM around - some gold tiles are not worked, and our income now jumps to 239gpt.

Switch some temples to libraries. Rush two temples.

IBT Hitties/England MA vs Greece.

(3)580AD: zzz

(4)590AD: zzz

IBT renew deal with wines.

(5)600AD: zzz

IBT renew ivory deal.

(6)610AD: zzz

(7)620AD: zzz

IBT Arabia/England MA vs Greece.

(8)630AD: zzz

IBT See English Cavs. :(

(9)640AD: zzz

IBT Maya/England MA vs Greece.

(10)650AD: zzz

Sorry, but I can't help to play 5 more turns. ;)

IBT I don't renew silks from England and I have to fix the riot. England starts Newton's.

(11)660AD: Temporarily raise lux to 20.

IBT Privateer sinks one galley of ours.

(12)670AD: I declare on England.

IBT Privateer sinks when attacking us.

(13)680AD:

3 treb, two misses and one hits.
army 8/4 kills musket.
vet knight 4/1 loses to vet musket and promotes it.
vet knight 3/4 kills musket.
vet knight 4/3 loses to the elite musket.
vet knight 3/0 retreats from reg musket.
vet knight 3/2 retreats from reg musket.
vet knight 3/2 retreats from reg musket.
vet knight 2/2 kills elite musket.
elite legion 3/4 kills cav.
elite legion 2/2 kills musket.
elite legion 3/2 kills musket.
vet legion 4/0 loses to 1-hp musket.
Our last attack! 4-hp redlined army kills the 1-hp musket and we capture London! Phew, if we are one unit short we'd have failed to capture it.

We now control Great Library, Oracle and Smith's Trading Company.

IBT Japan declares on us!!! Do they have an MPP with England? I hope we can hold!

Our army and 2 knights are killed by Japanese cavs, but we hold the city, and get:

Education, Gunpowder, Banking, Chemistry, Democracy, Economics, Navigation, Physics, Metallury, Free Artistry, Theory of Gravity, Magnetism, Military Tradition.

That's 13 techs. There is absolutely a bug because we don't get Music Theory, but we don't need it anyway as Bach is already built.

(14)690AD: We have two sources of saltpeter and i upgrade the remaining 3 knights to cavs. We have another 3 injured legions in London.

We now have war happiness so lower lux to 10.

I set 90 sci, Steam Power due in 9 at -143gpt.

We are tech lead and nobody has any IA techs yet (except England/Japan which I cannot see).

IBT London falls to Japan (and it even gets a leader - see pic). We held London for EXACTLY one turn, which is enough, of course.

CVN1-690AD.jpg

Fine, we've got the techs. We'll remember the heros and enemies. We'll come back!

(15)700AD: I start Newton's on Neapolis as prebuild for Universal Suffrage.

Greece is screwed.

Rush a cathedral in Viroconium. Make sure to fire the taxman next turn.

Next up is infra building. Universities and Railroads soon. We should also start building cavs to take out Korea and Hitties. Rush as needed. Do the normal Industrialization->Electricity->Sci Method thing.

Don't make peace with Japan until we have to - we need the war happiness.

We can buy others into war against Japan. :-)

The GL mission was really close - we used up all our attacking force, and held the city for exactly one turn to get the techs.

CVN1-700AD

You are awarded all the Eagles, microbe.

Good planning and excellent execution.

What a way for the Legions to finish their career.

Certainly wasn't the most ideal income, but it did get the desired result. Now on to more conventional warfare ....
