Figured I'd post cartoons that catch my eye here.

Cute. How come they're in English?

It's from one of the few english newspapers here. There are lots of Arabic newspaper cartoons but what's the point of posting them here. Hmmm.. maybe I can translate those.

Ah.. here's the Arabic version:

But what does it mean???

Shi'itte, Sunni and Kurd unite to be martyrs by pushing American made bowling ball over a cliff whilst being chained to it :crazyeye:

First Iraqi ski-jump is mis-used within hours of creation?

Looters who escape from American jail in Iraq face certain death.

I think it means that without the US, Iraq's ethnic groups don't have a chance to become a real, united country and will self-destruct in an orgy of ethnic cleansing, which I can agree with.

Judging from the angle on that cliff and the fact that the three gentlemen are having to push the ball, I thought it means that there is a lack of gravity in Iraq.

This could be bad. Should other nations supply Iraq with gravity? Everyone, donate some gravity. It's for a good cause. ;)

I do not know exactly what this toon is saying, but I think it means the Ethnic groups think the U.S. is the problem. Removing the heavy US pressence, however, puts them off the cliff as well. I don't know.

Maybe its meant t be a positive comment- the situation can`t be all that grave if there is a lack of gravity:crazyeye:

hmm... I must be looking at a different comic, it looks to me like the 3 ethnic groups are cozying up to america (pushing it) despite the fact that it is leading them off a cliff (they are chained to it).

An anti-american comic, and a boring one at that/

I think you are all missing the point somewhat.

All except napoleon, who was spot on. :)

Wow! maybe you are looking at a different comic:confused:

They seem to be keeping the "USA" at arm`s length and trying to get rid of it rather than cozying up to it.

Yeah, it looks to me like they're trying to push the U.S. out of Iraq, not realizing their fate is 'bound' to our presence.

I'd see why you'd be think otherwise. You mean this is in the Arab press? Does the artist have a fatwa against him yet?

Well it's in the Saudi press. Pretty typical cartoon too so I don't see why you think a fatwa would be forthcoming. Here's another one for example, though I don't think it's as interesting. It's referring to the recent Kuwaiti elections where Islamists and government backers took the vast majority of seats at the expense of the reformists/liberals.

I think it's some kind of jab at the weight problem a lot of Americans have.

Or something.

I love the way America is represented by a fat man with a top hat. Only pigs and Uncle Sam wear top hats, and I don't find the former implication flattering.

 I think the fat part is because we are, on the whole, fat! What is it, 1/3? And I think the top-hat is the same reason your pig has one - its supposed to represent consumerism and capitalism, I guess...
