DaNES I: At the Precipice

Its being used in a VERY different context.

Well, it's not like there's going to be too much major going on elsewhere in South America.

@Dis/Russia - Naval permission rescinded until conflict dies down. The straits will be closed until the cessation of local conflict, or if Blue Russia enters into alliance with the Aegean Empire.

Hey, folks, orders *are* due on Thursday.

I thought I answered your PM, Shadowbound. Will attempt to resend what I sent awhile ago.

I asked for more detail on one thing, and had another new question.

Fertig. Fröhliche Weihnachten. ;)

Also, I stand in awe of Julien-Francois I, Holy Roman Emperor, and his visit to my humble thread with his ADC Patrice MacMahon. Thanks, Panda!

flyingchicken, I am sorry about the whole Russia thing, but Dis as usual planned ahead a lot, and you did sort of play into his hands with the whole election thing. He also kept it secret that they were a PC with him at the helm, which sort of screwed you over.

Yay. I thought I would have to kill myself doing orders tonight. I can put it off to tomorrow now :).

Do you know just how many wars have been fought over the freedom of those damnable straits? We are only asking for the free passage of diplomatic couriers as stipulated in the various treaties from the 1856 Treaty of Paris onwards. Any pressure from your american allies is quite uncalled for, and only adds to their apparent (and confusing) anti-blue agenda.

@Dachs: I don't plan; I prepare and I steer ;). Also 'kept it a secret' - was there another option?

Shia Power Activate!

Hearing of the complacency of the Shia population to the British, Ibn Saud was immediately offended. While in Kuwait during his exile about a decade ago, he tried to drum up Arab unity in the face of both the British Occupation and, before that, the Ottoman one. The shia population played a crucial role in the Arab Revolt and the overthrow of the Ottoman forces in Mesopotamia. However, such radical hatred dies hard, even in Ibn Saud who viewed the Shia's as having no connection with Islam, a radical disconnected group. In order to secure Iraq, however, he would have to make concessions with them, including giving them their own state.

To spread this message the path was not so clear, many contacts he had, including the Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim had died, either from age or from assassinations. As such, Ibn Saud determined, it would be nessisary to start small, with the one Ayatollah there he knew, and hoped his name would spread fast enough to allow him to travel and meet others without fear of violence.

He set out immediately by small unmarked fishing boat to Basra, where Ayatollah Sayed Mohammed Bariq al-Sader preached, and, without much difficulty, Ibn Saud arrived with a small security guard of only four. There they talked in private, where Ibn Saud didn't have to try hard to win this old friend over. The Grand Ayatollah eventually said “Excellent, how can we help?” Ibn Saud said that he wanted to make an adress to the people before or after Friday prayer, where the entire Shiite population, approximately half the city, would be congregated into this one large mosque. Although
the Ayatollah originally had some doubts, perticularly concerning Ibn Saud safety, the popularity of Ibn Saud in this particularly city where he lived many years in exile was apperent. There was even a substantial Wahabist community that had since grown to contain about 10% of the cities population.

Speech to Ayatollah Sayed Mohammed Bariq Al-Sader and his congregation at the Mosque in Imam Ali mosque in Basra

For many years the state that is Islam has been under attack, from tyrannical forces of all sorts, claiming to either represent Islam or represent our best interests. Neither is true, and their only goal was the exploitation of the Arab People. Today we have a chance to once again to overthrown the shackles of oppression and rise up to a glorious morning of freedom for all Muslims and Arabs alike!

However, the Shia population has reacted slowly and warily, thinking that they will just be under the rule of another tyrant or oppressor. However, this not the case. The Islamic Republic of Arabia has no territorial ambitions, and our action are only for the good of the Arab People. As such, I promise you, as does our entire government, that if you rise up against the British overlords, join in battle with you brothers in Arabia, that there will be an new independent state of Shia Islam in southern Iraq.

Eight years ago, both sides, Shia and Sunni, for such a demonstration. Immediately the British authorities crushed the demonstrations using white phosphorus bombs, a weapons so evil that only the devil himself could have devised of it, on entire Kurdish Villages. Infantry and war machines of untold size and number were sent in to brutally crush the resistance. However, we need not fear such actions. The British forces are off half way across the world, being brutally defeated with their allies against the United States and hers. The forces in the Mesopotamia are minimal at best. Arabia has been defeating them, but our forces are small as well. We need the peoples support to take a position and stand up against the British forces.

Perhaps the British will divert some troops, some planes, from the battles in the south to try and crush your cause for freedom. But rest assured, we will be right on their tails and crush the enemy wherever they lay. Do not doubt our resolve, we have liberated the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, as well as Jeddah and Kuwait.

If you agree to this cause of self determination, join the Army of Islam and fight against the British. If you don't, Allah is all merciful, and all forgiving, and you will understand the error of your ways and join us in this Jihad against the enemy of Islam, this occupier of the Holy City of Jerusalem.

Although there was no massive cheering at the end, or chanting of Allahu Akbar, like in Arabia, the speech seemed to strike a cord in more than a few. Perhaps some were in silent bewilderment of how they didn't act sooner against this British overlord, or perhaps why they did not do more to support it. In any event the message spread quickly across southern Mesopotamian Shiite community.

Army of Islam

No Arab man at the trench line at Basra felt so out of place in all his life. Before him, in no mans land, layed more dead bodies than most of the soldiers have ever seen alive. Most of them came from humble nomadic backgrounds, where they only saw people outside of their family once in a year or so when they brought the animals in to be sold. Pastoral nomadism however was degrading as new reforms industrialized much of the Arab agriculture, making such lives harder and harder and forcing them into the cities. Here many of them struggled, until the two motivating forces of their lives, service of Nation and God came together as one in the Army of Islam

The Army of Islam was a blanket name for all the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Arabia. It not only included the handful of organized infantry divisions, but also the numerically larger less organized cavalry forces, know only to the high command as “divisions.” The final element were the local militias that pledged allegiance to the Arab nation, and joined them in battle.

Before the declaration of war, the issue of command of all these forces was hard to deal with, as well as the training of the Infantry forces. Never before had an Arab Nation tried to create such a unified modern fighting force, and there were no skilled commanders to use, originally. However, word of the creation of this army spread through canals of the Aegean Empire officers as an anecdote, saying how humorous the result would be. However eventually it reached the ear of Ismet Inonu, a former Turkish commander that refused to join the Aegean forces and was extremely loyal to Mustafa Kemal. He realized that he could easily take part in the destruction of the British forces in the Middle East, forces that he had previously failed to defeat in past wars. He set out immediately to Riyadh from his place in exile/hiding in Azerbaijan.

Traveling openly by camel, he was treated hostilely by the local Arab population in Mesopotamia, due to the racial sentiments between the Turks and Arabs, but found a receptive ear further south. He was immediately recognized by a former Ottoman Army member living in Riyadh and he told the information to a soldier guarding the government compound, it eventually made it all the way up to the Amir al-muminin Ibn Saud, and he sent out a group to meet him at a local inn and bring him back.

Ibn Saud was overjoyed by the presence of a veteran military commander, as the only military commanders they currently had were ones who only read about tactics from books and heard tales, and quickly Ibn assigned him to the Infantry Corps, based out of Damman. He headed there on a train, recently built, and arrived the next day. He was greeted by a number of military officers on horseback, alerted of his arrival by telegraph. There he was placed instantly in charge of the entire company of soldiers who clearly have never held a gun, and were far more at home on a camel with a bow than in a trench with a rifle. He was not made aware of the intentions of this force until he arrived, that the force would be used to take southern Iraq and, hopefully, more.

Continually he sent telegrams back to Riyadh, telling them of his difficulties. But his messages got progressively more and more optimistic. He decided the best way to train the force was using a top down method, to concentrate more on the commanders than on the infantry man. The reasons were two fold; the Arab Infantry man would never hold ground against a single elite British infantry man, and the fights would most likely evolve into trenched fights that even a monkey with moderate training could do his duty to country and banana. He sent letters to many of his former underling officers that choose not to participate in the new Aegean Empire to come down and join the Arab one. Many choose not, fearful of the Arab hatred of the Turks, but others obliged, most notably Mustafa Kemal's friend Ali Tabid who was a well respected general in all circles. They all participated hand in hand to set up the command structure of the new Army of Islam, training hundreds of Arab officers.

Battle around Basra (Part 1)

The Army reached proficient level of organization and command right as the Arabian Cavalry pushed into Mecca and Medina. As various British divisions defected, the officer ranks of the Army of Islam were further expanded. Eventually the order was given to strike hard at souther Iraq in hopes of puncher through to Baghdad.

However the advancing IRA lines clashed with British forces and were well drove back. Eventually the orders were given by Ismet Inonu to entrench around Basra. Most of the men on the field only realized what the commanders were talking about by “trench” from the Battle of the Trench during the early days of Islam, and it quickly made the Trench digging and the brutal warfare that soon followed, at least originally, a very pious and religious activity. Occasionally Ibn Saud himself would come up and re chant the stories, driving great zeal into the men.

However, when Ismet Inounu gave the first order for an infantry charge, the relationships to the famous heroic battle were supplanted by images of hell on earth. Artillery Brigades were called in by the British, causing giant balls of fire and smoke, while the constant clatter of the British machine guns shot bright tracer rounds out, as well as lethal bullets.

Stories take many different forms, these particular ones are arranged like biblography entries. I have made stories which were computer animations, and other multimedia. Basically a story is something which adds to the overall immersion in the time period. When people read, for example, my story, they sort of understand what is going on in the IRA far better than just what the stats or updates present.

Others have news stories which are even more "statements of facts" as you put it, but I see no problem with providing background that way.

Edit: oh, and at least I make stories :p

Meh, the Americans didn't pressure me about it, though he probably doesn't disagree with me. At this point, I just didn't want to have to worry about a Russian fleet attacking me. I guess diplomatic passage is fine.

Dachs, while preparing my orders I discoved something quite amusing. I ordered that Jean Decoux take his naval force south and link up with the Argentinians. This was done. However, during the conflicts, somehow Decoux lost 3 submarines- hilarious as he had none :). I specified not a single submarine be dedicated to the force- if you wish, I can send you a copy of those orders.

By 'statements of fact' I mean your writing stories about victories and events that haven't been confirmed by the update as existing yet. And I've written stories (well one at least ;)).

And surely the best way to ensure we don't attack and even gain our friendship is to grant our reasonable requests?

have never said anything of the sort, I did not say whether or not the Shia rose up against the British, all i did was say that they gave a speech, and some were stirred, but i made clear to leave it open ended.

As for the second two it only speaks of what has happened so far, currently my troops are in Basra fighting the aforementioned battle, like it says in the update.

If your commenting about the fact an old Turkish general came and joined me, it is such a small thing that I am able to take that much artistic license.

Yeah, upon review I was stoned, or something. Those are destroyers now. :p

Also, the orders deadline has passed, and I am missing orders from the UK, the USA (sort of), the Blue Russians, the Spanish, the Dutch, the Aegean Empire, Japan, and the Bulgarians. I guess I can give you another few hours, but since I'll be out of contact for the next few days while I update (on the road to Massachusetts) I can't accept anything after tonight when I transfer the orders over to a .doc and write the update offline.
