WAR ERUPTS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

A Vietnamese fighter moves to intercept Chinese bombers
Louangophrabang, Socialist Republic of Vietnam - In supposed retaliation against the Communist uprisings across Southeast Asia, the Indonesian and Chinese nations have declared war on Vietnam. The war, which has been named the Indochinese War, has been split on two theaters so far. The first is the ground campaign, led by the Chinese. The second is the naval campaign, carried out by the Indonesians.
In Burma, the Chinese 42nd Army Group and Vietnamese 1st Corps both fortified their positions, with the Chinese settling in the tropical river valley and the Vietnamese digging into the wooded highlands. Chinese shelling and light naval strikes from the South Sea Fleet have inflicted minor casualties to the Vietnamese forces, and attacks by Marxist guerrillas have done damage to the Chinese in turn. In Laos, the Chinese 27th Army Group crossed the border with support from the Wang Hai Air Wing. Unknown to the Chinese, the Vietnamese had taken up positions in the dense jungle and had situated artillery emplacements atop the hills behind them. The 4th Corps waited for the Chinese to close in and once the enemy 27th Army Group was well within range, the Vietnamese rained shells and rockets down upon them, which was followed by an assault. The Chinese took substantial casualties, but still managed to hold their footing in Laos. In the Skies over northern Laos, the Wang Hai Wing had severe difficulty finding Vietnamese targets in Laos, and was unable to adequately support their ground invasion. Many installations and fortifications seemed to blend in with the jungle which led to blind bombing. While over Laos, the wing was intercepted by the Vietnamese Sao Do Wing, which managed to down a handful of Chinese aircraft before both broke off.
In the South China Sea, the Indonesian Eastern Fleet, fresh from the whipping of the Vietnamese Navy, maneuvered to begin making its second round of strikes against the Vietnam. Expecting to encounter Vietnamese aircraft, the Eastern Fleet sent its destroyers out first, which would be able to better protect the capital ships. What the Indonesians didn’t count on, were anti-ship missile gunners and their knowledge of the attackers’ crippled carrier. Although the Indonesians were able to shoot down most of the missiles, two managed to hit their target and avenged their comrades lost at sea. The success was short lived as the Indonesians soon tore through their positions.

A Sniper of the Southeastern Army engages government forces in São Paulo
São Paulo, People’s Republic of Brazil - Continuing their unwavering support for the Brazilian Peoples Movement, the Southeastern Army moved south to end the Republican stranglehold on Brazil’s most populous city. The soldiers were greeted by jubilant crowds who were happy to see the first step towards the downfall of Ricardo Honorato de Moraes’ defunct and corrupt regime. On the way to São Paulo, pro-BPM forces liberated Londrina, and the Socialist control of the two cities has effectively boxed out the Brazil’s southern region to Republican forces. A small skirmish between the Southeastern Army and the Atlantic Army resulted in Republican casualties as the soldiers of the Atlantic Army found themselves outgunned, outclassed, and outnumbered by their Socialist foes. Support from the Republican 1st Fleet managed to deal damage to the Socialists, but strikes were limited due to orders not to do damage to the city.
Elsewhere in Brazil, riots have picked up throughout Republican held territory, particularly in the northern areas, around the cities of Salvador and Montes Claros. This is widely attributed to both the lack of Republican forces and the spread of Socialist propaganda demonizing Republican soldiers and leaders. The only exceptions to this were the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte and their surrounding areas, which have been subject to crackdowns by both police and soldiers of the Atlantic Army and have been presently dubbed the “secure zone”. Due to continued problems in and around Brasilia, President Honorato has fled. It is believed that he is in the Republican secure zone, but his specific whereabouts are unknown. It is believed he and his family are to be evacuated via ship so he can lead his forces from the safety of a foreign state.

A Mexican infantryman takes cover during the battle for Havana
Havana, Occupied Cuba - Mexican forces stormed into Cuba’s capital this month, capturing the last bastion of Cuban resistance. Originally, the plan regarding the city was to surround it and starve it into submission which was endorsed American military commanders. Mexican commanders quickly grew impatient and ordered the Americans to cease bombing and allow for an assault. Reluctantly, American forces stopped bombing runs and cruise missile strikes and the Mexicans moved in. Gunships dominated the skies and provided support for ground units. Tanks and armored vehicles powered through roadblocks and took away the Cubans ability to fight in the streets. Most resistance was found in Old Havana, as was the fiercest fighting in the entire war. Entire blocks were leveled to take out snipers and anti-tank teams. Many men were lost, but in the end, the Mexicans found themselves on top.
The victory in Cuba, and the dauntless actions of the Ejército del Sur resonated throughout Mexico. This wasn’t necessarily because the Mexicans defeated Cuba, but more that they managed to show up the Americans, considered to be the strongest, most sophisticated military power on the planet. Many anticipate the division of Cuba and expect Mexico should get the lion’s share of the territory seeing as they did most of the fighting.

El Hierro, European Federation - This month marked the construction of the world’s second spaceport and the end of India’s iron grip on space technologies. Early this month, the European Space Agency broke ground on its first spaceport on the island of El Hierro, the westernmost of the Canary Islands. The best geographical candidate, French Guiana, on the South American continent, was deemed too risky with the recent happenings in Brazil and the possibility of such an important and expensive facility falling to a foreign nation. The Canary Islands, although in the backyard of the United Islamic Republic, are well within the jurisdiction of the European Federation’s fleets, and thus a much more secure location. The completed facilities are on par with the standards set by the Indian facilities in Addu City, and the spaceport is destined to be the focal point of the European space program for years to come.
European researchers received a massive boost in government financial support, which, coupled with India’s lack of research progress this month, brought Euros ahead in the race to weaponized satellites. The ISRO does however have a lead in the number of space vehicles in their inventory, with a single shuttle and a geocentric spy satellite, and many more such vehicles to come. Many in the international community are claiming this sudden jump in European space research to be the end of India’s reign. Several site the EF’s clear economic advantage over the Indians and Europe’s control over debt issues. The Indians are certainly not out of the race though, as both the Europeans and Indians could potentially have the capabilities to put armed satellites in orbit by as soon as next month.
