acidsatyr was also a top player. i think the greatest downfall of that thread was that acid didn't go for a space victory. he was too much in love with domination, alas :( i wasn't enough competition for dave as i was only a low-level monarch player at the time. now i've improved a fair bit, but i still wouldn't tangle with davemcw ;)

Did Acid even play?

Dave, you must be reading this, don't you feel obliged to answer your call to arms?

Edit: Also, Futurehermit, when I read the first CE vs SE thread, it seemed that you would indeed tangle with Dave.

I also sign my name on the petition for a new "CE vs. SE" thread. WHOO! WHO'S WITH ME?!

Well, it's about time. CE hasn't improved any cause there really isn't much strategy there to begin with. More people are aware of SE now, but seems the big guns have long left to find another game, which is the sad part.

Anyhow... we'd have to come up with some sort of standards...

What happens if one guy picks Philo, and another financial for example...

Anyway, Dave... you've been summoned.

Dave said he had only played immortal once, in part 1 of the thread, so maybe you weren't too far off. I think given the start, it was a little unfair to assume he'd cottage the capital, and I guess that he wouldn't build pyramids.

I think acid proved that farm economies are good at, well, production, and demonstrated that by killing everyone on his continent. What was never concluded is that FE would out tech a CE, and if not, that the teching advantage would always beat a land advantage.

Speaking of which, where have all the insanely aggressive players gone? You know, settle next to an AI capital, just rush the hell out of everything?

I only wanted a walkthrough by DaveMcW but playing a new SE vs CE game would be fun too. What happens if we pick financial and Philo ?

Err, you beeline to rifling and kill everyone with Liz's redcoats?

They were originally going to play as Elizabeth, but Dave said he didn't need Liz and they played as Peter. Anyway, they'd have to be the same leader.

Would you like to start one? I surely won't be participating, but I'd love to watch it play out and maybe debate a little.

I think a leader with both financial and philo would be unfair to the SE player if a GP-farm is allowed for the CE player. It would be far more interesting to pick a leader without either of those traits.

Dave McW's specialists can cure cancer. Too bad Dave McW has never used a specialist. Ever.

If you have 5 cottages and Dave McW has 5 cottages, Dave McW will have more commerce than you.

CE vs SE thread? Got it.

Same map, exactly. Just get a map up, do some Python stuff with it, ensure the same starting position. We'll play with Unrestricted Leaders. Choose any Civ, and then give Mansa Musa (Spiritual, Financial) to Dave, and Gandhi (Spiritual, Philosophical) to the SE Player. Thus, the 2nd trait, UU, UB, and map are controlled. The only variable is the first trait. Or, we could take it a step further and grab Asoka for both, giving neither side a trait advantage.

This is the way I see is the best. Because IMHO Financial gives more benefit for CE than Philo gives for SE. Maybe that's because I tend to play SSE with only a couple of well-timed lightbulbs - not so many GScientists needed.

What brings us to another issue... Should the SE be played with a lots of bulbs or more like SSE? I guess that's up to the player.. Personally I never lightbulb after Education.

But Hell Yeah, I would like to see another SE vs CE thread! But I'm pretty sure Dave isn't going to do it since he hasn't even responded to this thread yet.. And I know he reads everything here.

The CE player has to be permitted a GP-farm; otherwise you're comparing 'normal' SE's against crippled CE's.

And the SE/Farm economy has to be allowed to Axe rush the CE player and kill him before any of the cottages have the opportunity to mature into Towns; otherwise you're comparing 'normal' CE's against crippled SE's.

If "crippled" means that the SE/FE player in one game cannot launch an offensive against a player in an entirely different game, then I admit I'm primarily interested in "crippled" SE/FE's.

Ok then let's start a game. Here is my vote:

Leader: Liz (Phi/Fin)
Level: Emperor or Immortal (higher is better for SE)

SE cottages only in the capitol
CE max 2 GP Farms (1 NE and 1 NP later in the game)

Continents and no isolated start

BTS 3.13

I've only seen one post by this DaveMcNorris guy. That was after reading this thread the first time. He sounds like the Isaac Newton of cottages. Did one fall on his head? If he does do a walkthrough or play a game I would really enjoy reading along and learning.

once and for all: It's called Capital

Since the greatest strength of an SE is the ability to leverage the early advantage that it gets into greater success in the later game, a real head to head game that would compare SE vs. CE would allow the players to interact directly (i.e. attack each other). I'm not going to say that the "real" game is in multiplayer, especially since I only play single player games myself. The SE's ability to identify and eliminate the most troublesome adversary takes on greater significance when your most troublesome adversary is another player.

That would, of course, make the logistics of the game nightmarish and make taking the time to grab screen shots and take notes while planning moves during the game more trouble than just about anyone would be willing to put up with, but I at least wanted to put it forward as a factor in whatever game actually does get played.
