Dawn of Civilization General Discussion

Feedback on the new West Africa: I played a Mali game, and I like the reworked region very much! The Mali UHV is definitely easier than before, which is good. I still lost, but it was close.

Great to hear, I agree that things fit much better now. Maybe I need to slightly increase the gold threshold for the third goal though.

By the way, I don't think I mentioned this anywhere: Mali starts at Djenne now as opposed to Timbuktu.

I think the 3rd goal is already the hardest of the three, but that may be just me.

By the way, I can't build settlers in Timbuktu (1W of the cotton). Might this have to do with North Africa being a different continent than Subsaharan Africa?

The rewriting of RiseAndFall.py isn't the thing that is holding it up. The Warmaps and Settlermaps mechanics will be rewritten somewhere in the future. At least, IIRC Leoreth mentioned that once.

I see. So I guess those, at least, really should wait. But we can start working on other aspects! :D

Can confirm that. Timbuktu's region is included in the Maghreb region while cities to its south is included in the West Africa region. We can either shift the border between Maghreb and West Africa one tile north or define a new exception to the settler restriction rule for Mali and possibly Morocco.

5. A number of displays don't take into account the extra bonuses from specialists in high culture cities. If you aren't aware of this, I could post some screen shots to show you what I mean. I believe the effects are still counted, nonetheless.
I asked for screenshots for this, unfortunately I never heard back (or did I miss a post?). Does anyone know what they're talking about?

Paris has really low production, but historically had quite a lot of wonders built in it. Is there a reason for this weird dichotomy? Or did I allocate my improvements wrong and we're supposed to build watermills in the surrounding grassland instead of cottages?

The reason is real life geography and how Civ4 relates geography and tile yields.

Northern France is relatively flat and lacking in significant metal. Cows? Horses?

I've always kind of appreciated the geography of France and how it interacts with gameplay. Like, getting those wonders built in Paris is meant to be a bit of a challenge. If the area had more production we'd have to make the UHV harder :)

Paris has access to both pigs and wheat, one could be change to a cow if we wanted to trade a little food for production.

@Caesar Augustus True, but I feel like it's easier just to build the wonders in Rome and SE French city and build a bunch of culture buildings and settle GAs in Paris.

Which tech is it that allows for settlers to be built overseas now? Exploration?

Honestly I should just spend some time reading the pedia and suggesting edits, some of it is out of date and that sort of task meshes well with my (lack of) technical knowledge :)

Yes, Exploration.

For the people getting crashes with the 1.15 prerelease, please try continuing the game without the VD module (saves are compatible). I am very confident the error is caused by broken unit art in that module.

When does the japanese core area change happens? Is it based on time?

Yeah, Industrial era.

I updated my files and it really did it, I could continue my Roman game with no problem! Great job man for solving this problem!

There was a Reformation in my game and this error text game up. The save is 2-3 turns away from this error.
