Dawn of Civilization General Discussion

Alternatively, one of them could be :commerce:, and the other :gold: and :science:, which would be slightly more powerful (1,35*1,35=1,82) and also boosts other sources of :gold: and:science:.
I like this idea!

Anyone also observe this? Religion almost always stay, and barely disappear now

If you build a city in Iceland and have a Great Artist create a Great Work, you can move through the ocean tile NW of the whale - nicely evokes the Sagas, 10/10

If you build a city on the tip of Greenland, you can bypass the strategically placed ice sheet which otherwise blocks your path - nicely evokes Norse settlement of Greenland, 10/10

However, once past that point, there's NO WAY TO ACTUALLY GET TO VINLAND! The tile two spots below the Greenlandic whale is designated as "cape", so there's no way of getting past it without researching Compass, which makes the whole previous effort moot :(

Am I missing something?

Speaking of traversing the ocean, does the Arctic Coast prohibit trade routes, or why is this city not trading with my cities in Malay?
Spoiler Siberian City :

PS, does anybody have any insights on winning the Malay game that doesn't involve settling Siberia or getting lucky with AI trading? No Jade, Silk or Tea hung me out to dry in my first attempt, but I'm thinking I'll need to send a scout to the Europeans for some Wine, perhaps.

Until you wont settle Imeratorskay gavan or on Sakhalin and get your culture borders conected - you wont get trade routes. Same problem with cities in Canada

Is it still Imeratorskay gavan for Malay?

Try to make contact with the Turks/Mongols, as they have lots of resources to trade. Jade and Silk are usually possible, but Tea is very hard.

With a bit of luck Arabia or the Turks have wine for trade. Else try to meet the Byzantines (send out one of the initial galleys with a (weak) unit).

So this is a property of the Arctic Coast, or what's going on there?

I must've just had bad luck, unfortunately. Arabians collapsed early, Byzantium as well, China collapsed to core early and never had Silk or Jade to trade, Mongolia converted to Islam quickly and was my worst enemy within a couple of turns.

I think next game I will try to tech a technology to gift to Mongolia so he likes me, and I will send a scout to go meet the Europeans.

How do you handle bad luck for your recordings, actually? Just playtest until you have a reliable strategy?
I usually only playtest the starting 10-30 turns or so, to get an idea for how I want to open the game. After that, I'm pretty confident in my ability to carry things through to the end, once my opener is figured out. But as for dealing with bad luck, I'm usually able to just work through it, or minimize the degree to which luck is involved in my strategy. Unfortunately, I think this Malayan 2nd goal, and that Congo Apostolic Palace are the two most luck-dependent goals in the game, as they depend on AI circumstances that are mostly beyond your control.

Speaking about city of slaves. Well, it's not easy to get so many slaves. I sent legions to Africa in classical era (I was running Slavery until got Colonialism) + i was able to byu only 5 slave and still short in slaves :wallbash:. Especially, then natives cites became Indy, and i got bad luck with capturing slaves after that time. Also you need strong culture (maybe not, if you don;t mine unhappiness). Anyway, there is not much sense about such city for Rome game (you cant settle slaves in Rome :crazyeye:).
Portugal - you UHV short-termed, not sure you can benefit from it, maybe France and England could benefit from it, if you settle Africa early and will run slavery
Mali, hmm? As Rome in classical era i was able settle slaves in Maghreb, so it was as different continent for me, so maybe as Mali you can settle slaves in Egypt?
Ofcoz in Cross modmod where much more slaves - you can made really productive city with slaves (as with Azteck)

Has the minimum year for conquerors changed? I know it used to be 1300 but I saw an AI with conquerers in North America earlier recently.

It's 600 now.

Ethiopians UHVs are so ... different. The 1st and the 2nd are fun and require some action. The 3rd one though is so sluggish. It is the turn 400 (so I have 100 more turns), but so far there are only 2 colonies in Africa. Even Egypt is independent (I planned to liberate it from Turkey, but they do not bother).
Am I expected to gift cities to non-African civs to liberate them later?

Im gonna be honest, there should be a conqueror event or a big increase their war values in africa in 1800s to represent the Berlin Congress, even if it means giving Congo to the Dutch since Belgium doesnt exist.
Resource and capital wasnt just the drive for colonization for the Europeans. Also their senselss pride for having these lands was also a drive. France being the prime example of sunk cost fallacing its colonies and refusing to let it go because it would be a hit to their pride and "prestige".

The problem is that “liberate city”, if mali and Congo are not alive, is impossible. But also with mali and Congo still alive, if french or england does not start colonize that area, how can I liberate city?
Maybe it could be changed in conquer European African colonies (no ottomans) and give indipendence to them.
4 time i tried but everytime I failed with this new 3HUV.
