Deity please! #3

What AZ says, as soon as you have a unit that is superior on open field to what the AI has, you are in no danger at all. That is basically the whole secret behind winning a Deity game, you can abuse the city hugging (and splitting their defenses to cities miles away..).

one thing that I am not clear long time too is... you seem to use a lot "sleep" instead of "heal". is there some reason for it?

If I hit sleep then usually I don't want to be bothered with that unit for a while. If I hit heal then I want to use the unit as soon as it's finished healing. These two buttons do mostly the same thing and so I sometimes just hit rest when I mean heal and vice-versa.

not sure why i could not upload a save (says upload failed)

@ABigCivFan Looks good.
You guys love farming matured villages/towns, do you? In my game Uruk was good fin city as it was (it had Academy though).

not sure why i could not upload a save (says upload failed)

There is a problem with uploading saves right now. You can use some 3rd party files host service and put link in your post.

Fun map and good thread; don’t give in too quickly GKey!
More players may be playing and following, but not posting due to whatever reason, than you realise – the starting save has some 50 views by now.

Part 1: Barbarism and music
Spoiler :

My expansion pattern got completely shut down by marauding barbarians.

Literally hordes of warriors and archers block the eastern elephant/horse sight. They even dance down from the north and delay my Sparta location. I had archery but bows and arrows don’t do well in forcing back barbarians.
I take a barb city to the south. Forced by Gilgamesh I don’t get the time to farm a level 4 swordsman (he was 9/10 experience!) so no heroic epic boost either. Poor little me :(

I still have room for 6 cities so I sit back and tech up.

I go the aesthetic route for Glib, settle a quick academy in Athens. In 175 bc I win the music race and bulb philosophy.

Sadly Germany has already seen the birth of philosophy so no monopoly for me. Frederick is racing through the tech three with Civil Service done.
The good news is that while Gilgamesh for a shot time was Buddhist, he and Joao decided it would be for the best to plummet their empires into a lengthy tug of war, to settle a dispute about a few acres of unworkable jungle.

Saladin, being religiously isolated and thus hating and world and everyone in it, is in war-mode. He can’t get to me though so I’m fine with that.

Part 2: Horses with boom-sticks
Spoiler :

Monopolizing paper and keeping AIs away from philosophy, I bulb education once and fuelled by a golden age make my way to liberalism, self-teching nationalism to pick up Military Tradition. Build the Taj Mahal.

These are the years of the whip. “Visit Greece and see the red mist of blood in the air” or so the travellers guide says. But I think I made a grave error here – I wait for Rifling. Capitulating Gilgamesh was easy enough but the other AIs are quickly advancing through the tech three. Goody two-shoes AI won’t take war-bribes!

Gilgamesh cities hold absolutely no structures of significance.

I stopped Saladin from crushing Germany but much to my alarm Frederick peace vassals to Sitting Bull.

Attack Portugal.
As you can see I take some good cities, but alas I cannot break him into submission.

He just now got Rifling. Add to that, he had a machine gun sitting in the last city I took and more will likely be ready in Oporto.

I throw in the towel at this point.
The tech situation is horrid. The remaining civs are strong. From here on it would be an uphill battle to take the win. To much trouble, if possible at all.

The deities take this one, but I will make sure to return with sharpened claws, foaming for revenge should you choose to host more “Deity Please!”

^^ Have fun and good luck!

Meanwhile I rolled a few starts and kind of like this one.

Only 1 gold this time. ;)
Should we start #4 with this one?

Loved your report. :) See you in #4!

I'd loved to play that next start. I was going to give this a go put multiplayer is so addicting.

@ AbsoluteZero
I agree with the cuirassier/rifling situation. I give protective trait to much credit.

@ GKey
Thanks!
Nice leader choice for #4. Will be tuning in.

Played until 1130 AD
Spoiler :

I suspect the easiest/safest way to play this map is block Sumeria and give them a junk city early. Then run to an extremely early lib and rush over Sumeria somewhere between 600 and 800 AD with cuirassiers. But with phants and great commerce a cat war seems like fun. 200 BC i'm ready for Gilga who is already at war with Joao. I'm still chopping so there's more to come

375 AD Sumeria destroyed, i'm behind in tech but that's not a problem with 10 cities + 2 good city spots. I did work cottages near the capital. In a situation like this winning the lib race is almost completely irrelevant.

1130 AD Almost tech parity, most ais have demo + a whole load of small techs on me. From this point i will easily overtake most of them in tech. I can win by attacking Joao in good time with either Infantry/cav(promoted)/artillery(promoted) or cavs/fighters/bombers. But i've enough land for a space win too.

What's with the save upload functionality, it doesn't work anymore?

Updates to 1260AD

Spoiler :

1180AD: 45 Cav + 11 Airships ready to invade Jao

1190AD: 11 Airships soften Jao's Rifles. They bring down the Rifles' strength from 14 to 11.2 (-20%). Not bad at all.

1190AD: Attacking each rifle with a Flank 2 Cav first, 6 withdrawns! Only lost 1 Cav taking the first Jao city.

1210AD: 2nd Jao City fell along with 7 Rifles, 6 cannons and 1 Phant.

1260AD: Lisbon fell (4 best Jao cities are captured, he is done)

^Convincing

Spoiler :

I generally try to avoid cavs vs rifles even if i have airships. You show here that it's perfectly sound to do this. I think this may get too hard if the victim is protective less you're willing to sacrifice a lot of them.

I see Civfanatics is aware of the problems with file upload, hope they fix it soon. Imageshack is great for pictures but you can't host saves there.

have a question. If you make elepult warfare do you use cats as suicide or is the ele strength so high that you can attack without collateral?

I saw in the ABigCivfan stack something like 8 cats. From my experience after 2 cities i wouldn't have enough siege with suicide

i usually use 2 cats first, second sometimes survives. Then phants have usually >70% and i'm beginning to take out top defenders with them. Sometimes after phants i use cats again but now they're winning, then other units mop up.

Sacking cats when phants are > 70% is a bit of a waste imo. Phant is only 10H more than a cat so losing one is not that much worse than losing a cat. And it was my stack btw :D. ABCF shot for lib and went with curis.

8 cats is reasonable for initial assault but you have to keep making reinforcements as i did. I really had 0% trouble this war.

Phants vs archers are fine, but vs longbows you usually need siege. Watch how "AbsoluteWhipping" handles this - there is no such a thing not enough siege. ;)

well different people have different techniques. I think I overuse the siege a bit based on the description from Dirk and then happen to have "not enough".
That's probably why I suck with siege warfare and get better results with mobile cavs/tanks warfare

It comes to luck at some point.
Suicide 2 cats - My main force got 60% chance to get these longbows. Question - suicide 1 more or attack? Mathematically you should attack, but to me 60% chance = I will sure lose. So it comes to amount of redundant forces - can you afford lose some? How many?
And here Absolutewhipping's tactic can't fail you.
On the other hand I just can't stand sometimes keep whipping cities working decent tiles.
Would be nice to see less cruel but not less efficient techniques.

@vranasm, vs longbows you need significantly more siege. Also you have to monitor the defenders closely. There's often one or 2 heavily promoted longbows. This can cost you loads of cats without them seriously making a dent. Better to sack one or 2 c2 phants against these to soften them up, then return to cat collateral. Fighting against protective lb's on hill is definitely no fun party.

@GKey, i haven't seen AZ's video's yet. I whip a lot myself but i tend to plan in advance that i have grown cities so big that they keep on working key tiles at all times. In this game i whipped that cow/corn/horse/double phant city several times but never below size 5. Most of the whipping was done in the south western cities that only had 2-3 good tiles at first as i didn't have time to get mines up early there .

I think if you plan a cat phant war well you should generally succeed because the window of opportunity is so large. The strain on the economy is very big though, it usually takes some time to recover, more than after a war chariot rush for instance.Consequently a stalemate where you have to sue for peace should absolutely be avoided, your new cities will be worthless due to cultural pressure and you will have to build new units to take the rest of the cities, the deity ai will have new units as well and it'll all end in tears. So i think you should attack with overwhelming force in these sort of wars.
