I really want Denmark to be a viable civ, but can not find any way to make them work. Im not a noob, check my sig, but this civ just seems so completely worthless.

The plan was to play it to its strengths, but who the hell builds up an army just to plunder for gold? Might as well just quit the game and play a real civ?
By the time you have reached your target across the sea you're facing musketmen, and reinforcements are always 20 turns away.

Domination? There are better civs.
Science? No bonus what so ever.
Culture? Dont think so.
Diplomacy? Will never happen.

Can someone give some new ideas? Or is Denmark just made to be bad at everything?
Emperor - Deity level, BNW, standard or large continents map, everything on standard settings.

The biggest bonus about Denmark is the UA's moving from sea to land only costs 1 movement point, because with the various boosts to embarked movement speed you can have extra movement when going from sea to land. For example you plan to settle the island nearby for a resource you don't have your can, if it has at least 2 moves when it is ready to disembark, disembark and immediately settle the new location instead of having to wait a turn. Or, your siege units are able to land, set-up and fire on the same turn as if they had be on a road on land.

The benefit to no movement cost when pillaging isn't just for the gold, it's also for the healing if you're playing G&K or BNW.

The siege engine trick is amazingly useful.

I used to think Denmark is completely useless, but after I figured out how to use them better (including the siege engine trick) I found out that they can be a lot of fun. Yes, even when you use them properly they're still a bottom tier civ, but there is a certain joy in fielding an army of berserkers & trebuchets.

If you do play them, make sure to emphasize melee troops, (I had about half melee, quarter archers/CB/crossbows, and a quarter siege in my conquering army.) rather than using almost exclusively archers/CBs. (which is what I use when playing most other civs.)

3 move Longswords are cool ...
Double move over hills from rifles on is even better ..

Early iron reveal was a buff for them (for all civs) .. The water tricks are more situational than the 2 above ...

Liberty start - get 8-9 warriors hoard cash - beeline steel (manage to somehow stay alive until then and also get a few catapults/trebushets) - then you are set :P

The thing is, how often do you use the "Move from water to land"-UA? Once per game? Twice? And if you do, is it only because of the UA, or because its better to use land troops than ships to take a coastal city...? I personally always use ships to take coastal cities. Then ferry over troops.

And the Berserker is really cool, but Ill rather have the same thing with Rome (Legions), AND a very powerful UA...

I just cant see Denmark being anything than the absolute bottom civ sadly. :(

That's the thing, though: if you want to play Denmark well, you'll do that all the time. Danish troops are faster on the water than on roads for most of the early game, so they should be travelling on the water whenever possible. And even if they are travelling by land for whatever reason, you can (and should) hop into the water when you get to the enemy so you can land on the opposite side of the enemy city. What's more, when landing on any terrain, including rough terrain, you only spend 1 movement point leaving you with 2 more point to... run inland, or set up a siege weapon and fire, or whatever.

And if you do, is it only because of the UA, or because its better to use land troops than ships to take a coastal city...?
With Denmark I pretty much only use ships to A)eliminate the enemy navy, and B)cover any troops that are still embarked. All city-taking responsibilities fall to my land forces, and I focus most of my production on land forces, not ships.

They're not a particularly powerful civ, I'll give you that. But I prefer Denmark over Japan, Germany, or Sweden.

While I haven't played them yet in BNW, I feel Sweden got better with Brave New World, since you should be able to gift Great Writers/Musicians/Artists to City States. They're all rather easy to generate since they're each on a separate counter from other great people.

I wouldn't say they're clearly the worst civ, but yeah, they probably are. I think Japan comes close. They both suffer from being dependent on melee units in a game where melee units are almost worthless, but Japan's saving grace is that Bushido actually becomes useful when air units appear, whereas Viking Fury is never more than a gimmick (also, the AI literally can't use Viking Fury to save its life).

It's a fun gimmick, though. I'd generally rather play Denmark than the (similar, better) Songhai.

The Japanese UA at least means your melee units are much harder to kill since they always fight at full strength. Also Samurais keep Shock on upgrade, I don't believe Berzerkers have any carry over on their promos.

Don't get me wrong, Japan aren't much good either, but they're much better than Denmark IMO.

Berserkers carry their Amphibious promotion over, don't they? Of course, Shock is better than Amphibious, and the Danish UA actually makes Amphibious kind of redundant, so. Yeah. Poor Denmark.
