Department of General Musings

better yet, we could do a game with a few permanent alliances. That way the more experienced players could be matched up with the in-experienced players. with Perm. Alliances you can see what your teammate is building in his/her cities and even research the same tech to get it 2x as quick. The AI below Monarch aren't worth playing IMO and I don't have the time for a SG, but I do for a PBEM or a pitboss game.

A moment of silence please, as another Cubs season is dead. The game last night typifies this season. They were up 5-2 going into the top of the 6th and then
Cliff Floyd and Carlos Beltran hit grand slams, and David Wright added a two-run shot in an 11-run sixth inning as the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 13-7 Sunday night.

:shake: I might take a day off from work to grieve

That even made the news in the local radio sports update at 6:40 this morning, way down here, in Big D.

Let the dirges begin.

(There are records and then there are records...)

yeah wait til next year. that'll be the year of the cubs. ;)

I hung my Cubs flag outside my office (a.k.a. cube) with the headline posted at the top.

We Cubs fans have got to stop financially supporting an organization that has no interest in winning.

as a Phillies fan, i commiserate w/ Cubs fans the world over - we share a commonality me thinks - our teams' owners care not about winning!
El J....I (subliminally my dad Butterball) feel your pain.

How did the Bard put it?

'Misery loves company and Cubs fans' ?

Or was that Howard Cosell? ('I'm just telling it like it is.')

Hey, I just noticed. Hope I'm not too late.

Happy Birthday, Grahamiam!!!

The only problem with PBEM is that they take so long. Loook at this thing. We are approaching the first anniversery and we're only on turn 155 (or is it turn 156? :crazyeye: )

I don't have any experience with a pitboss me. Don't we all have to be on line at the same time? Unless we're in the same room, I can't see that happening very easily.

With Pitboss, no you wouldn't have to all be online at the same time. You could play your turns when you needed to and each turn would have a time limit. if you don't log in and make your move in that time, any queued actions are executed and then the pitboss ends your turn.

I agree that PBEM might take too long, but to be honest, that's all I have time for. I only get ~ 1 hour a day to actually play any games that I'm in. And as many of you know 10 turns in a SG could take more than that. I had to back out of the SGOTM 10 for this very reason.

I had E-train sitting with me yesterday for ~ 30 minutes though while I was paying bills on the computer so that's an improvement :D

thanks for the cake gmaharriet and bugsy :)

@ bugs: pbem games take long, but if you want to play a 1v1 (with or without AI), they can be done more quickly. for instance, I'm playing Romeothemonk and we started in April and we're up to 1320AD as of last night. In a 1v1, you tend to get powersessions going, where you'll play 10-20 turns in one night, especially very early where you only have to hit the spacebar. Of course, another option is to play over gamespy. I was playing a Tuesday night game with some old friends/relatives. We'd play for 3hrs (8 to 11PM) every Tuesday night. The host can save and rehost the game every week. It's very interesting and fun :)

Happy b-day Gman!

@Bugs I have to say I'm finding I don't like civ4 in a SG format however I really enjoy the pitboss and pbems games I'm in. I can't put my finger on why.

@ graham, happy belated bday.

@ whomper, the problem with C4 SG's is that there are too many ways to win so that it is almost impossible to develop a coherent strategy from one player to the next. my two cents

That's the second coherent thought that you've had. You are on a roll
