[dev thread] Mad Max Fury Road

Hmmmm i am not sure it's connected, but there were threads on similar trouble a while ago...

Try to copy the original nifs (NextWar_Cyborg.nif in this case) in the same folder where the unit and the anims are. Just so they are there, no need to reference them in the art defines or something.

This is because the original nif is referenced in the KFM, and sometimes it beeing missing will cause trouble.

this worked. go download the new version :)

@garret: got the new madmax, I will try it out later today.

@refar: got the new motorcycle with punks, awesome! I will try it out later today. Any chance you could separate out a "foot" punk with crossbow?

^^ This goes to fixing MadMax animation.

Finished the Motorcycle, final units are here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=279463

I recommend you delete the previous version compeltely, before unpacking the new files, otherwise some garbage that is not needed any more will be left over.

Oh... David was faster than me^^

I will have to look if i can rig chuggies punk on crossbowman skeleton. If they are not to different in shape, proportios and mesh subdivision it should work.

Here's yet another punk
crossbowpunkby2.jpg

There is something awkward in the way how he holds the crossbow when idle (not fortified) and the wrist is twisted a bit, but so it is with the original Chokonu - would need a complete new set of animations to fix it, which i would rather not do concidering the scale it will have in the game :mischief:

You can have teamcolor on the punk (Mohawk i am thinking :D) if you want - all it takes is to paint alpha chanel dark (transparent) where you want it. (Same goes for the bike and the punk there btw)

We are making great progress on unit artwork. There is always a little chicken and egg problem between the game designer and the game artists. I want lots of units! But you guys are volunteers! Here is the status of which units have "good" artwork in the current game.

Survivor Warrior - (EDIT: yes, new one from Refar)
Punk warrior - yes, chugginator "Punk"
Survivor settler - not yet
Survivor crossbowman - (EDIT: sort of, reskin of crossbow punk)
Punk crossbowman - yes, Refar "CrossbowPunk"
Survivor rifleman - yes, Garret "madmax"
Punk rifleman - not yet
Survivor flamethrower - yes, seZereth "firefighter"
Survivor machine gun - not yet
Survivor motorcycle crossbow - (EDIT: sort of, reskin of biker punk)
Punk motorcycle crossbow - yes, Refar "PunkBiker"
Survivor jeep crossbow - not really, using WillysJeep with machine gunner
Punk jeep crossbow - not yet
Survivor jeep rifle - not really, WillysJeep has marines, not survivors
Punk jeep rifle - not yet

Once we have a survivor body/skin, then the missing units can be filled in with different combinations of the parts we already have. The WillysJeep and flamethrower unit are on the forum download site.

There is also the "pickup truck" unit created by asioasioasio. The one I put into the game uses gun attack animations but has no visible weapon or gunner, so it isn't quite right. I have in mind a pickup truck with four different weapon mounts - crossbow, machine gun, flamethrower, and some kind of antitank weapon.

On those punks... Basicly i could go and rig the punk now on a Rifleman (maybe rather infantryman) and give you a punk rifleman.

But somehow it would make 4 times the same punk... (Not to mention the 2 x jeep-pun...)
what i am aiming at - perhaps we need more different Punks (Reskins might do ?) or maybe some kind of replacement/upgrade... Like say - Punk with schoulder-pads/armor...

Well, variety in the punks is good. In terms of required techs, the units come in different branches of the tree, so there is no strict progression. However, I would rank them like this.

1. base warrior
2. crossbow and crossbow motorcycle
3. rifleman
4. flamethrower, jeep crossbow, jeep rifle

The lowest level ones should have the least armor, the higher level ones should have more armor. Like shoulder pads and such. Garret's madmax unit (which I am using as the survivor rifleman) has shoulder pads. His unit is on the download forum, it came from the Next War cyborg unit.

It is possible that the jeep crossbow may not be used much. By the time you can build jeeps, you can almost certainly build rifles.

Also, I had forgotten that I would like a survivor/machine gun as one of the highest level units, and a survivor/settler family which fits the same style.

Here's another one from the silly department.

vaultdwellerhw5.jpg

It's not 100% done yet (i.e. not rigged) since i don't know what use (and if at all) you could have for it... I am thinking along the lines of non-combatant - perhaps kind of great person: "dug up scientist/technician with lost knowledge"...
Could go as survivor type of unit as well...

I will not be mad if you don't have a use for it, so tell me what you think.

Another in-joke like the two headed cow. One of the ideas I have floating around is exactly related -- an Event, in which a Great Scientist pops up in one of the ruined cities. This could be used for that. So if it had the same rigging as a real Great Scientist, that's all we would need.

Of course it is your choice, but what I "want most" is the Survivor Warrior.

Before I released version 0.4, I updated my leaderheads page to show the 18 LH I am using. As you may recall these are all 3D animated LH available from the forum download page, in most cases I have stuck some other backgrounds behind them.

I have searched around the web and found a bunch of post-apocalyptic backgrounds which I have collected on this link. The page may take a while to load the large images, and you may recognize some of them such as Fallout 3 concept art. I could stick these backgrounds behind the 3D LH. That would be some long repetitive work to update the files and make the different resolution output which is needed (button, 2D leaderhead).

What I would "like" is to have an artist update the 3D LH to look post-apocalyptic. But that is a lot of volunteer effort.

Do you think it is worthwhile to update only the backgrounds? Or is that just wasted effort on the current 3D LHs?

Here is a shot at the basic survivor with a really big wrench.

survivorgl5.jpg

Unfortunately i was not able to produce a credible looking "rugged" look for the pants, so i left them intact. Overall the texture could be better (Hair and vest around the shoulders.) If he's appoved, i will rig him on a suitable combat animation. The wrench is big, but not as huge, as this picture make it look.

cool stuff guys.

keep in mind, that I already have a set of custom modelled punks started (with football armor and the like). so, concentrate on something else and just be a bit more patient, uni is putting a sh*t load on me ;)

I might use the trainride time today to progress on them.
More time tomorrow.

So, maybe refar can work on the stuff i cant, like the vehicles or the rigs for vehicles.

And about LH´s. I would consider working on 3d heads a waste of time, but thats just my harsh opinion.

Thats good news. I was thinking hockey helmet or something as well, so footbal gear sounds nice.

BTW. What are those black stips coming form Max legs in Davidlalens screenschot ? Is MadMax glitched or is the bolt effect i used on the biker brocken

@seZereth: We will certainly be patient to wait for your set of units. It sounds exciting. Refar's particular unit fills my biggest immediate need, since in the current version, every player starts out with a vanilla ancient warrior. That really hurts the "look".

@Refar: Approved? Sure, it looks great. That wrench is certainly big. Is it easy to stick him and a crossbow onto the WillysJeep?

@Garrett: (are you there?) I had not noticed the black lines on the madmax unit before, I think it only happens when they die and fall over *and* they are on a hill. Can you take a look?

Ok, i will rig him then.

Not sure with the jeep. Just put him with a crossbow there is certainly not a big deal... Make the crossbow actually shoot is another issue...

i am definitely fine with refar doing the survivors :D i just wanted to say, dnt rig this one punk to everything, you will get variety ;)

about the mad max issue, i think some vertices are not rigged properly, or are right to Bip or to pelvis. and this way are not animated with the unit, but stay where they are.

About the crossbow, maybe simply replace the gunshot effect with the arrow effect?
(dont know how simple that really is, but both effects exist, and you managed to do that with the bike, too ?!).

Here is the bunker, now working on silo ;)

EDIT:
The "silo" is definitely not good for civ! too many textures, textures are tiling and high polies.

what about asios purex as a depot: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=9348 ???
Or, I´ll do a custom one, if you can send me a rough reference.

Edit 2:
I am working on a survivor Flamethrower unit, you´ll be surprised ;)
