[Development Thread]WW1 Mod: Blood and Iron

Yeah, it's going to be a tough one to get to. Maybe I'll just make the HMS Queen Mary (not to be confused with the RMS Queen Mary) instead.
But wait... the HMS Queen Mary is a Battlecruiser! I thought you were tired of Dreadnoughts? Battlecruisers were much closer-kin to Dreadnoughts then Cruisers. The Queen Mary carried 13.5" guns! That's bigger then the Helgoland!

I thought you wanted to do smaller ships, not more Dreadnoughts!?!?!

My research is clearly not as good as yours... Are there any other cruisers (protected or armored) that you can find better pictures of? It doesn't matter who built it, I just need something I can stick in as a place holder.

I can probably find better pictures of a British or German cruiser... yeah... let's just concede now... it's always easier to find German and British anything when it comes to the World Wars.

Shame too... that was an exhausting search to come-up with WWI French Cruisers...

Also, units like the 'Storm Trooper' aren't just an infantry model, but a composite of several different units in a formation - in this case, storm stroopers include light (portable) machinegunners, flamethrowers, grenadiers, standard infantrymen, etc.

The difference between pre-war units, and mid-later units will not be done through new classes (except where appropriate). In the case of infantry, by changing the era limits, infantrymen change uniforms depending on how far advanced you are. If you haven't researched Trench Warfare, you're men won't wear helmets. To make up for the improvement in safety, a promotion is given to them. In general, I think this keeps things a little cleaner.

I'm liking the idea of Storm Troopers even more. Much better than how I had envisioned them in my tech tree notes. 1 question is, has anyone modeled a flame thrower in action? I know there was one from CIV III, looked nice, but the flames needed to shot out a lot farther...Would this unit also be a multi-unit (is it possible to have a multi unit that is composed of different types of units, say a flame thrower, grenadier, and infantryman?)

To make it easy on you unit wise, you might want to consider the 1st level of infantry units to use the rifleman graphic. When WWI started out, the french had some nice brightly colored uniforms.

as soon as smitty supplies me with pictures and references, I will take care of the Infantry section. already looking forward to it ;)

Martock@ A flamethrower unit was just released, look in the Unit section. :)

Ok, I trimmed down my tech tree. Got rid of all the prototype this and that bits. It's closer in line with what you originally had Snafusmith but still a bit bigger.

I was wondering about events. Can event be triggered if you research a particular tech? If so, I could come up with some nifty tech triggered events for this mod.

Glad to hear a flamethrower unit was just released. I'm off to see what it looks like.

If you need a Visio viewer, I have a link to one in post 57.

I got one for you to do -- a reskin of a soldier to accomodate the Albanian faction Smitty will have in the Balkans ;)

Ok all, I sent this out to a few of you, but more will see it here...

If you've noticed I've been a little slow at responding or getting promised pictures/research to you, it's not that I haven't been getting your messages or seeing your posts. Work has really picked up this week (12-14 hr days) with the possibility I'll have to work some weekends. Modding, though fun, is tough with all that going on. Hopefully life will settle down in a week or two.

Don't fret! Every day, no matter what, I try and do something on the mod. A little graphics/XML at a time adds up. Things are just hecktic now, so please don't be surprised/frustrated if it takes me some time to get back to you. I definitely will, eventually.

On uniforms...
If you would like to help get things along (and can do research) try looking up pictures of period WW1 uniforms - I've found quite a few, but I'd like to get seZereth a good amount for his work on the infantries. Send me a PM, and I'll give you an email address you can send them all too. After that I'll compile them and get them to seZereth. We're incredibly fortunate to have him working with us on the mod, and want to support his efforts as much as possible. After all, he is the best figure-unit maker out there for CIV!

I know the feeling snafu... I've just had back to back long days... 14hr and 13hr respectively... back to work!

Though I figured as much, thanks for the heads up dude.

When searching for references to do the Canadian WWI Infantry I came across a fairly helpful site on Canadian Uniforms and weapons and stuff. Might it help?

It's still coming - I haven't had much time to work on it. Between my work crunch I managed to get sick on my only day off- I'm getting better now, so work will resume. I'll make sure to keep you all up to date.

Something I like to keep in my mind......

Don't worry if it takes a long time, just worry if it's right and good. ;)

That's the mantra I follow for all my code. :)

Amen :)

In the begining when i was learning models i tried to make things fast - but than it appeared that i need to do things twice.

The ultimate modder is one who can combine quality with speed. ;)

But overall quality does top speed, unless it takes really freggin long... :p
