DG01 - Snake eye

Turn 0 1970 AD:
Change civics to Representation (instead of Universal Suffrage) and Free Religion (instead of Theocracy). This will drastically decrease our upkeep. We might want to switch to Police State later on though if WW becomes worse. We go from -29 Gold/turn to +14 Gold/turn @90% science. Trade Composites for Mass Media and 210 Gold with Frederick, sell Composites to Caesar for 900 Gold and deer for +2 Gold/turn. I sell Ecology to Huayna Capac for 590 Gold and last but not least… Coal to Mao for +4 Gold/turn. Our Economy is healthy to fund this war! We’ve got 2366 Gold on the bank now and making 20 Gold/turn.

image034.jpg

Dimychicalco is the only city with unhappiness after these changes. I make some changes in the city screen of Dimychicalco and start building a Theatre, it’s due in 5 turns.
I check out the map and notice our newly captured city of Marseilles is only defended by 1 Armor…that’s a bit too optimistic I fear. But new troops will arrive in the next turn.
We’re going to need airports, so I’ll start building some of those during my turns.

IBT:
A French Armor arrives at the gates of Marseilles.

Turn 1 1971 AD:
Stealth Bomber finished in Teotihuacan, starting Airport (due in 5 turns). Another Stealth Bomber finished in Karakorum, we already have an airport there, so I’m building another Stealth Bomber. The stealths are rebasing to Marseilles. I attack the Tank outside Marseilles with a Gunship, odds are in our favour, but the Gunship gets destroyed nevertheless… I send in a 2nd Gunship for the kill.

image035.jpg

I use our bombers in Rheims to do some collateral damage on the defending units in Tours. I attack Tours with two City Raider II Modern Armors and a City Raider II tank, Rheims is ours and we pillage 222 Gold. We bombard Lyons, our next target with a Destroyer and a Battleship. Next round I’ll upgrade those old Bombers to Stealth Bombers. I realised I made a mistake earlier… I thought Rheims was still under French control, but it’s ours, that one Tank in Marseilles will do fine, although I do intent to replace him with a Mech Inf.

IBT:
A French Battleship arrives at the coast south of Gufnorkopia.

Turn 2 1972 AD:
A Mech Inf is finished in Tenochtitlan, I will airlift it to Marseilles to release the Tank from City Guard duties. I start the SDI in Tenochtitlan (due in 7 turns). I start an Airport in Atzapotzalco and in Golden Iron. We continue the bombardment of Lyons, first with our battleships and destroyer, then with our stealth bombers. I upgrade 3 old Bombers to Stealths for 615 Gold and a Veteran tank to Modern Armor. Lyons should fall next turn…and Paris is next!

Turn 3 1973 AD:
The French Battleship moves towards Teotihuacan…we have a bomber there so I start bombing the battleship. One of our own Battleships is on it’s way to intercept it. A Stealth Bomber is due next turn so we can bomb it twice next round. I also upgrade one of our Frigate’s near Teotihuacan.
Meanwhile our navy starts bombing Paris. As I really don’t know what to do with the workers on our mainland, I’m automating them to Build Trade Network. When we need them, we can always wake them.
I’m using 6 Stealth Bombers to attack the units inside Lyons, 1 bomber is intercepted by a SAM, but the others are successful. Then it’s time for our tanks and modern armors, we have no casualties and easily take the city and 156 Gold. Paris should fall in the next couple of turns and then there’s only Orleans remaining on the French homeland.

IBT:
The French are attacking Lyons with no less than 4 Artilleries and do quite some damage…although we have no losses, we have many wounded.

Turn 4 1974 AD:
Tlatelolco starts building an Airport and Golden Iron finishes it’s airport and starts on Modern Armor. I also start an Airport in Calixlahua.

image036.jpg

Our destroyer (the Frigate I upgraded last turn) sinks the French Battleship outside Tenochtitlan after we bombed it twice.

Turn 5 1975 AD:
image037.jpg

We start bombing Paris. The Battleships are good for reducing the city defences while the bombers do collateral damage.

Turn 6 1976 AD:
We continue bombardment of Paris, 4 Modern Armors are ready to attack Paris, but the city has 6 defenders, as our Armors used 1 movement to get to the city they can attack only once… I have 3 nearly healed Gunships in Lyons and decide to use them…hopefully we can take the city this turn. Our Gunships do a great job and each kill a defender, our Modern Armors take care of the 4 remaining defenders and we take Paris! Orleans is next!

Turn 7 1977 AD:
A French sub is moving trying to attack our Battleships/Destroyer enroute to Orleans. I bomb the sub with one of our Stealths and sink it with a Battleship. The rest of our Stealths bombard Orleans, city defences have already been reduced to 0% by the Roman Navy, so we attack the units. Our Modern Armors will roll in the next turn. I have a transport ready near Lyons to ship units over to Chartres.

Turn 8 1978 AD:
I thought our Armors would have movement left to attack this round, but they don’t…so I keep bombing Orleans.

Turn 9 1979 AD:
SDI finished in Tenochtitlan, start Bomb Shelter, I recommend we build these in all our cities, they’re cheap and will help us defend against possible nuclear attacks in the future.
We bomb Orleans and Chartres with our Stealths. We capture Orleans without losses.

Turn 10 1980 AD:
We discover Fiber Optics, Fusion is due in 6 turns. I use all our stealth bombers to attack Chartres..we do maximum damage to the units in Chartres as our last bomber cannot attack anymore. I land our troops outside Chartres, we can start attacking next turn… as there’s 9 defenders as 4 Modern Armors, in order to take the city the next turn we need to attack the last defender from our transport (a transport with 4 more Armors is arriving next turn outside Chartres).

Well...the french have 2 cities left now, one of them is due to fall next turn. I suggest we make 10 turns peace with him in exchange for all his gold. After that we can take their last remaining city easily and maybe have a few rounds of peace to start preparing our next war. I suggest Huayna Capac. We're gonna need some Mech Infs, you can put them in the former french cities. There's a lot of highly promoted Armors on the french continent that we can use in our next war, so they need to be shipped back after putting the mech inf's in the cities over there. We can always fly in 3 or 4 newly build Modern Armors back to the French Homeland for protection. This war was quite easy... but I'm expecting the things will get tougher with Huayna. The French hardly had any defense against our Bombers, that helped us a lot.

looking good, and to fight modern warfare sounds nice too.
I hope we can get some allies for the next war.

Maybe I have 10 turns of preparations only...though I would love to fight myself

save

Pre-Turn
ok, so peace with France and prepare to fight Incans
they seem a good target and maybe we can pull in other to fight them
will properly MM once we have peace and WW is gone

1. 1981AD
defeat 9 units and Chartres is ours
dg011981a.jpg

make peace with France for 360g and 1gpt, that's all he has
we now need to shift our units to that Island that Persia shares with Incans to start the attack

2. 1982AD
sying on Cyrus and sending our units over to Persia

3. 1983AD
zzzz

IT Cyrus demands that we cancel deals with Inca, I agree this time

4. 1984AD
this is a slow process, but nothing can be done, plan to ship over 8 MA to Rome and start to attack from there

5. 1985AD
will start attacking using Cumae as a base with stealth bombers and the MA'a

6. 1986AD
final preparations for the strike

7. 1987AD
the last French city has been captured by Rome...bye bye France
time for us to move in to Incans
want to dial them up but they don't even want to talk to us, well, no issue

unfortunately this triggers war with China as well
ask Caesar to join in the war aginst both of them for fusion
Frederick would be willing to join but we have nothing to offer to him for it

attack Macao in the far north, but there is one infantry left
bomb and attack Arequipa on French Island, raze it after defeating 3 MI
attack Cori..., naval forces cut down the defenses
dg011987a.jpg

decide to raze it since Roman culture pressure would be too high anyway

in the north march towards Vilcas and pillage the uranium

IT China comes sailing with some transports towards France and attacks Chartres where we have only 1 tank, but we survive
Incans do not attack at all

8. 1988AD
sink one transport full of troops
start to attack Shandong, also found a city in place of Arequipa before the AI takes it again
recon Cuzco, it has only 5 defenders, our chance next turns

in the north take Macao and Vilcas and keep both

IT the AI seems a little too tame, no attacks

9. 1989AD
defeat another 4 units and Shandong is gone, no need to keep it since our borders already cover that corner of the Island
slowly advance towards Cuzco

10. 1990AD
take Ica in the north

we can attack Cuzco next turn, there are 6 stealth bombers to support
dg011990a.jpg

we should try and advance in the south from Chartres, there are some more units there now
dg011990b.jpg

I would also go and take out those 2 remaining Incan towns in the northern arctic
dg011990c.jpg

this game is fun so enjoy

by the way, we have built quite a few bomb shelters already, almost all major cities, we might have to fear them once we attack Cyrus or Caesar

Excellent! I got it, but probably won't be playing before tomorrow.
By the way, i will go on a two week vacation from friday to 6th of January.
Sorry about this, but i will need a skip for that period. Where i am going, the computer won't be able to run Civ4. ;)

Inherited Turn:
Put Teotihuacan back on growth. It is 6 bellow happiness maximum. Order another engineer for Tlaxcala.
Turn research down to 80%. We are not in a rush to get those future techs.

*enter*

(1) 1991 AD:
A Chinese gunship withdraws after taking a shot at Chartres.
We take Cuzko. It seems far enough away from roman settlings to avoind culture pressure, so i keep it.

(2) 1992 AD:
Chinese attack us with a tank and a SAM Infantry, but lose both.

(3) 1993 AD:
Rebase units. Will attack Machu Picchu first to allow our battle ships to get to Vilcabamba and bombard it. Unless Caesar gets it first, which would be ok as well.
civ4screenshot00004gk.jpg

(4) 1994 AD:
Huayna attacks with a mech inf and promtly loses it.

(5) 1995 AD:
I start the attack on Machu Pichu. It goes well (no losses on our side), but it is going to take another turn to take it.
Our fleet is still too small. The dam nets keep getting ripped up. Seems like this is what the AI is good at.

(6) 1966 AD
A fighter shoots a stealth bomber of ours down. Some bad luck there.
We conquer the city nevertheless.
On the Chinese front we manage to conquer Xian.
civ4screenshot00014wm.jpg

(7) 1997 AD:
We lose a modern armor to an attacking mech inf after defeating an artillery.

(8) 1998 AD:
The mech is feeling lucky and tries again. This time we prevail.
We take Vilcabamba. It is going to be trickier now, as some cities can't be reached by our navy.
The siege of Guangzhou starts. Artillery batters down the defences.
Wow.. we have hit +7 war weariness already!

(9) 1999 AD:
Guangzhou
IMGAE

(10) 2000 BC:
Reshuffle and heal units. We need some artillery in Inka land to cut trough the +80 defence bonus in Tiwanaku. Some of our units are stuck on islands. Either send a transport to fetch them or just rush an airport in the cities there. Oh yeah, we are in representation. A change to to universal suffrage might be a good idea.
Things go smooth in China, but we could do with more bombers there. Not all cities have bomb shelters yet, so that is something to keep in mind as well.
This war really is a cakewalk thus far. :)

---------->The Save<----------

I feel like a complete idiot for asking this, but how do you take screenshots? I do it by pressing "print", but that seems to work only about half of the time. Of the 6 screenshots i took, only 2 were saved. That is pretty annoying.

Since this is probably my last turnset before i leave for my vacation, i want to take the opportunity to wish you guys merry christmas and a happy new year! :)

Representation? At this stage Police State is the only option. Police State, Vassalage, Emancipation, State Property and Theocracy is the best Civic setting at this time, I believe. Jails is a priority now in all large cities.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too, in case you read this post in 2005.

Yeah we should definitely change to Police State, I switched to Representation during my turn when we were still fighting the French, at that time Representation was the best civic, but now we'll probably be at war until the we finish the game so WW will start to bump in. I'll switch to Police State immediately when I start my turns.

About screenshots...PrntScrn is the correct button for that, but I had it fail many times as well... I think it's a bug, many people have this problem.

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to you too!

Gufnork: Did you ever try loading a save again?

No, didn't dare. Heading home for christmas though, will try and load it on my parents computer, should work. So I can probably jump back in from then on and finish this.

Sorry it took some time, but I finally did my turns and here's the log of events.

Oh...before I start, I have installed the new Civ IV Patch, so the save game will probably no longer be compatible with version 1.09. One odd thing when I loaded Till's save occured... we magically appeared to be in 1980AD again rather than 2000 AD :). So I think Firaxis updated the Epic game speed as well, giving it a couple of more turns.

Turn 0 1980 AD:
Research is really not important anymore, we had many unhappy cities and running deficit at 80% science and 0% luxary. I changed this to 50% science and 30% luxary, I’m also swapping from Representation to Police State.

IBT:
An Incan Mech Inf attacks Machu Pichu but get destroyed by our Modern Armor.

Turn 1 1981 AD:
Mao made peace with Caesar. Bombarding the Chinese city of Hangzhou and the Incan city of Tiwanaku with our stealths, also advancing our units towards these cities. Besides the bombings, not much action this turn.

Turn 2 1982 AD:
Continue bombardments, our units are closing in on the cities… City defenses down to 0%, started bombing their units.

IBT:
The Chinese attacked our stack outside their city with a Mech Inf, but lost… the Incan did the same with an Artillery causing collateral damage.

Turn 3 1983 AD:
We’re ready to attack Hangzhou, Modern Armor beats Gunship and does collateral damage, Modern Armor kills Mech Inf, Modern Armor kills SAM Infantry, another Modern Armor kills the last remaining defender, SAM Infantry, and we take the city.
Tiwanaku is next, it’s heavily defended by a City Garrison III and II Mech Inf! But we managed to take off some of their hitpoints with our bombers. We should have enough units to capture the city this turn. I start the attack, 1st Modern Armor gets himself killed, 2nd one wins as does the 3rd…both Mech Inf’s are destroyed now. Another MA kills a SAM and finally we kill an Artillery and take the city, the Incan’s are down to 1 city on their home continent and a few cities scattered around the Globe.

IBT:
The Chinese manage to destroy 1 of our Modern Armors in Hangzhou with a Mech Inf.

Turn 4 1984 AD:
Huayna Capac made peace with Caesar. Healing units and picking out some scattered hostile units here and there…including a Chinese settler and worker.

IBT:
Mao offers peace and 290 Gold. I tell him to go screw himself.

Turn 5 1985 AD:
Continue Healing…not much happens.

Turn 6 1986 AD:
I discover a problem…we are never going to heal our units in Hangzhou as the Chinese keep bombing them! I have no choice but to move the stack backwards to let them heal.

IBT:
The Chinese keep bombing that stack! Have to move them even further back.

Turn 7 1987 AD:
It’s time to attack Ollantaytambo, I shot their defenses down to 0% with our navy and bombarded their defenders to shred. We got 5 Modern Armors at their gates ready to take the city. Our first Modern Armor takes down 2 Mech Infs. The 2nd one killed 2 SAM Infantries and a 3rd Modern Armor killed another SAM and an Artillery, we take the city.

IBT:
Amazing…the incans take back Machu Pichu by attacking with a Mech Inf that was left to protect a Uranium Mine…

Turn 8 1988 AD:
I take back Machu Pichu with a Modern Armor.

IBT:
Huayna Capac offers a peace treaty, as we have taken the most important cities, I accept the treaty for now so we can focus on the Chinese… they’re giving quite a struggle at the moment. The Chinese shoot down two Gunships and kill an Infantry in Hangzhou.

Turn 9 1989 AD:
I bomb the Chinese stack outside Hangzhou but have no units there to kill them off. Airlifted a Modern Armor to the city.

Turn 10 1990 AD:
Defenses of Shanghai are completely gone, I also caused max Collateral Damage to all of the units in Shanghai. Next turn we should have some healed Modern Armors and we can advance again. I do have a transport, destroyer and battleship waiting outside Guangzhou to use for the attack against Nanjing, but first I suggest to take out Shanghai and Beijing.
As far as happiness goes…there are no angry cities, so looking good. I’ve been building some jails during my turns and we swapped to Police State of course.

The war is going pretty well for us, but now we need a better defense against air strikes. We've got quite a big fleet om bombers but should increase our fleet of Fighters, ideally have 1 on Intercept mission in every city and a couple in spare for "hot zones" that need extra protection. Especially the Chinese airforce slowed down our momentum considerably... Our Armors are still healing far away from the front from their attacks. But I think we can start sending them to the front in the next few turns, I moved our first fighter to Hangzhou where it started it's Intercept mission.
Here's the savegame. Enjoy :)

Dimy, who should take this, Gufnork or me? I won't play today as I am celebrating xmas anyway.
We can wait for Gufnork to try whether it works on his parents system

Dimy, you posted the wrong save, that one is from my last turnset I believe

no it's not, with the patch the year changed from 2000 AD back to 1980AD. I only have one file called DG01-AD 1980 AD and that's dated 23-12-2005 when I did these turns. I loaded the 2000 AD save game from Till one more time to doublecheck and was back to 1980 AD again. I think they made the Normal game speed a bit "slower" and added extra turns to it.

My parents system proved to be too weak for Civ IV, even with the new patch. I'm afraid you'll have to finish this without me.

ok, I got it then, but it's too late here now, will try and finish this tomorrow night

save

Pre-Turn
MM and insert quite a few work boats for faster growth

1. 1991AD
moving towards Nanjing, also send a transport towards those northern Chinese towns

2. 1992AD
raze Nanjing, move on to Shanghai

3. 1993AD
capture Shanghai and start to bomb Beijing

4. 1994AD
march on to Beijing, in the north take Tianjin

5. 1995AD
easily take Bejing without losses
start to move towards Incans, which we should take our before taking on Cyrus

6. 1996AD
tansport reaches Circei, lose a tank but manage to take town

7. 1997AD
land 2 tanks next to Chengdu

8. 1998AD
bomb the city properly and take Chengdu, Chinese are gone as well now
set up attack on Incans next turn

9.1999AD
cancel deal with Incans and war it is
move forward on northern ice Island and take Huamanga on Island

10. 2000AD
take Andahuaylas and Incans have 1 city left that we can take out next turn

I started shifting units towards Cyrus, we should take him on next and try adn take out a few cities fast so that his resistance
get broken down. I built a few jets to counter bombers.
We are now at 46.6% domination, but some borders will still expand
