DGIT # 2-Krafty Koreans

ready when you are :)

I'll join...
Never played an SG before, and I'm not thrilled with the direction this game is apparently going to take (because I usually win peacefully, through alot of warfare), but I'll give it a shot... Put me last in the play order please...

@Blasphemous

Welcome to the team, dont worry about this game being peaceful. We will probably do our fair share of warmoongering throughout our games, the last DGIT game was spent trying to conquer the world with rome.

Also this is regent level so we would probably have to do a bit of fighting to achieve our goals.

I'm also slightly daunted by the difficulty level, since I just recently moved up to Warlord (even though when I first played Civ3 I got to warlord, I've had months and months of no civ between that and PTW, and between PTW and C3C... Ended up having to re-learn some stuff. ><)
Anyhow, why Korea? Their UU won't be too useful, and the Commercial trait really only comes into its own late in the game... Wouldn't an early-boomer trait such as Agricultural (Sumeria) or Industrious (Persia, Ottomans) allow us to become powerful early and stay that way throughout the game?

I've played as Korea several time, and both times I had reasonably-sized empires. My second game was pretty good-- I followed a "no-wonder" strategy and that allowed me to grow pretty large. (I also went to war against Carthage early on, with chariots)

You aren't the only one daunted by regent, Blasphemous i havent won a regent game yet, guess there is no time like the present.

We just had a really agressive game with the romans so we picked a civ where we would have to be more peaceful in order to win.

Dont forget also that all civs can build the standard units as well so we aren't completely limited.

The commercial trait is useful all the way through the game, if we roll a river start, we will have a great start. It gives each square anextra unit of commerce along the river as well as the river bonus (i think).

Anyway the key to being a good civ player is to be able to beat the game with any civ, not just to be limited to your favourites.

Just give it a try, the worst we as a team can do is lose. And if you make mistakes then they can be picked up and corrected by the next player so its not so much of an emergency anymore.

SolarKnight.

I liked Sumaria myself, but was outvoted. But it's a tie now. You have a choice in the matter Sandrock? Yours would be the tie-breaker vote. And as for no wonders, I'm not confident in the strategy. Some are essiental. We'll need Hoovers for sure, and The Internet would help greatly. Also we could really use Great Lib so we can let the others do the research on techs we don't want to go for. I really like the Ag trait of the Summarians. Has anyone else tried it and see how powerful it can be, especially in a despotic goverment?

Welcome aboard Blasphemous as the last member of our illustrious team</Delusions of grandeur>

As SolarKnight indicated even in peaceful games, war may be required. If someone has uranium or aluminum that we need and they refuse to trade it too us, then we are left with but one alternative.

We had a good UU last game so it will be interesting to see how we do with one that is not as powerful. As far as difficulty level, playing a succession game on Regent is like playing a Warlord game by yourself in terms of difficulty. Don't be afraid to lose, as its hard for any one person to be the sole cause of a loss in a SG. Also, we can learn more from a loss then a win. I've only beaten Regent once BTW. I'm most likely going to go with Korea.

The turn order:

1)SolarKnight
2)SandrockLQ
3))SpikeIt
4)-Oblivion-
5)alerum68
6)Smellincoffee
7)Blasphemous

Sounds good to me. :)

I am unable to get the save up tonight because the computer I have Civ3 is unavailable. I'll try to make sure I have the save up by tomorrow morning.

I am interested to join. I will answer the question that follows:

a-You must be able to beat Chieftan: We likely will be playing our next game on Regent, but don't worry if you haven't played that level. The nature of succession games usually prevents any one person from destroying the game.
I am able to beat Chieftain, but not with a Space Race. I was able to beat the last Chieftain game with a Space Race, but unexpectedly I won before the Spaceship was launced... because of Cultural Victory. The most often reason to beat is Cultural Victory. I would also be able to beat Chieftain pretty easily because I would destroy other civs.

b-You should not be able to beat a level greater than Regent(at least on a regular basis). When you sign up, just say what the highest level difficulty you have beaten is, and we'll let you know if you fit in. There is flexibility here, and its really more of a subjective thing. If you have any doubt just ask, and we'll let you know right here.
I have never played a difficulty level higher than Chieftain. See my answer to a.

c- You should not be a succession game expert. Chances are if you've played in a large number of succession games, you're pretty good already.
I am not a SG expert. If I fail terribly, you can download the savegame of the player that played immediately before me, and I will quit the SG, unless others say to me: "Please stay in our SG and and continue playing."

d-You need to have PTW patched to the latest version available. We will probably switch to Conquests at some point.
I have Conquests already installed. I downloaded patch 1.15 beta. It seems to have no serious errors.

e-As with all succession games you'll have to post what you did each turn. We are relatively lax about what you post about each turn as long as we get the important info.
Of course. I have lurked a few SGs (without really reacting) and the participants also descsribed what they did each turn.

If I just confused you with all of that double talk, let me put it simply. If you can't beat Deity, and you want to learn with us how to do it, then you're in the right place. You also don't have to know a lot of acronyms. We're all here to learn, and I picked up a ton of new tips just from my first succession game. I learned a few tricks in DGIT # 1 alone.
No, for me it is not double talk, you sound pretty clear to me.

I fill in my preferences. No changes of preferred settings or question marks means that I resp. agree or that I also don't have opinion to it.

Oh, we are playing on C3C 1.5b, right?

Oops, I would be the 8th player. Am I still able to join?

If not, no problemo. I would start a new SG with almost the same settings and conditions that was set up by Sandrock LQ.

If yes, count me in as the 8th.

Wait a second, shouldn't we go for Greece rather than Korea? Greece's UU will be excellent for expansion (since we spend less turns producing each defender in the age of Pikemen) as well as keeping our cities safe from barbarians and rival invasions...

4000 BC DGIT #2

I don't have time for a screen shot, but I think we got shafted on starting position. We have a river, but there are four tundra squares, 2 grassland shield squares, a mountain and a hill if I remember correctly. Maybe SolarKnight can put up the start position picture if he has extra time.

We are playing conquests 1.15(stilll comsidered beta, but will show as 1.15 on title screen.

hanskamp-unfortunately we've reached the limit. I would keep an eye on this game, we may have a need to add someone at some point. Thanks for the reply though.

I'm off to work, good luck SolarKnight. BTW, send the worker north to see if there is some better land before you settle the capital. We can always irrigate up from the river.

As I said, that is not a problem. I will start a new SG, but I will keep myself available for this game.

If you want, you can also join my game, that I have in mind: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78499

Got it. Will endeavour to play tonight

Here is our start position guys.

DGIT-2_Start_Position.JPG

And here are the initial turns:

Turn 1 4000 BC: Move worker onto the mountain to the north to reveal a much nicer, greener area than we first anticipated.

I Move the settler onto the Forest tile to the NW, this looks like a much better starting position. There are only two tundra tiles:D).

Turn 2 3950 BC: Seoul Founded, set to warrior. Begin max research on pottery so as not to waste anymore precious time.

Begin improving the capital by starting a mine on the mountain tile.

Turn 3 3900 BC:

Turn 4 3850 BC:

Turn 5 3800 BC:

Turn 6 3750 BC:

Turn 7 3700BC: Seoul :Warrior -> Warrior.

Turn 8 3650 BC: Warrior explores.

Turn 9 3600 BC: Warrior explores.

Turn 10 3550 BC: Warrior explores.

Turn 11 3500 BC: Warrior explores (see a pattern emerging yet? :p). Borders expand.

Turn 12 3450 BC: Seoul: Warrior -> Warrior.

Turn 13 3400 BC: Warriors explore.

Turn 14 3350 BC: Warriors explore.

Turn 15 3300 BC: pop Goody hut and get Ceremonial burial.

Turn 16 3250 BC: Seoul: Warrior -> Settler (fortify warrior).

Turn 17 3200 BC: Warriors explore, im starting to think that we actually have a rather descent startingarea as there are a fair number of cows, bonus grasses, wheat and rivers appearing now.

Turn 18 3150 BC: Discover Pottery, Switch to Writing.

Turn 19 3100 BC: Pop goody hut near Seoul and get barbs  :aargh:

Turn 20 3050 BC: Manage to save the day by killing the barb warrior nearest to Seoul and ensuring that our worker survives.

Well thats it for now, I think the land we started on is actually quite good, we just need to settle as much as possible to make good use of it.

I haven't met anyone else yet so that probably means that there are no expansionist civs anywhere near (although i wouldn't bet on it).

Here is our world as we know it.
