DGIT # 2-Krafty Koreans

Hey, guys, I'm back from vacation. Sorry I didn't get a chance to tell anyone, but we left two weeks earlier than expected. Looks like I've got a LOT of catching up to do...

Welcome back! Just in time too. You're up:

1)SolarKnight
2)SandrockLQ
3)SpikeIt
4)-Oblivion-
5)alerum68 <== Just Played
6)Smellincoffee <== UP
7)Blasphemous <== On Deck

Someone give me an idea of what's going on and what I should do, because I'm in four SGs and you people talk quite a bit. ;-)

Hmmm. Let's see...
  • Complete railroads
  • Improve low production cities
  • Clear any remaining jungle
  • Continue city improvements in the undeveloped lands
  • Use infantry builds to disband into improvements
  • Build up a defensive navy
  • Tech, tech, tech. Continue toward space

We're in builder mode. Try and keep our luxuries via trade. I don't think we are all in agreement about whether to pick a fight anywhere, but the above should keep you busy for 10 turns. Have fun moving stacks of workers! Yawn.

I'll be honest here:
The real reason to have a world war is that late-game Builder-style gaming is just so damn boring.
We can afford to build up a huge military since we're raking in piles of cash and still manage to get techs in four turns. A war means we can use this cash for unit support and for good ol' Commie Espionage.
And with sufficiently organized strike forces, we can cause enough damage to get cities for peace, with no need of ever landing a seaborne unit on enemy shores.

My style of play is generally Builder. Only I use alot of warmongering all the time to provide for building up a fancy empire with nice infrastructure. :D
I hardly ever fight simply for the sake of victory and conquest. Even my most enormous and idiotic wars are just strategic builder-oriented descisions, often intended to defuse a major threat.
So I don't really want an AW game.

Anyway, how about we wait with DGT3 till we're all ready to patch to 1.22?
It's a shame to hold ourselves back from this important patch.

I would like to sign up for DGIT#3....Thanks

Hold yer horsemen. ;)
DGT3 is still a while off, methinks.

Oh, good. Builder mode, thank goodness. I think all of the other SGs are having wars. But I wouldn't know, haven't been ablle to read these things in a month. :(

Regarding boring... I'm pretty much the same type of player, fighting out of necessity. But the boredom factor does sometimes creep in where I feel the need to hand out some :hammer:. I like a game where there's a goal in mind, but all victory options are enabled. That type of games opens up more strategic possibilities sometimes forcing wars to fend off the AI. But with this game's only option being space, there is no strategic reason to fight, even if the turns are kind of dull at the moment. I think the appeal of the AW game is the forced strategic situations they create. Its guaranteed that an AW game will be frantic (ie fun) at some point. But without being civ experts, I imagine the same result can be seen if the difficulty level is pumped high enough. Hopefully the game would be more strategically engaging too.

Our next game should leave all winning conditions available, but should be played on emporer. If its too easy to get ahead of the AI, the game eventually becomes like this.

As for 1.22: I'm playing with dual booting between the two. There are some posts about setting up to play either version. That way we can move on to 1.22 even if 1.15 is still needed.

I think we should play on emperor. I just played on emperor and i learnt so much from the game !

I recommend you read an article in the war academy first about moving from Monarch to emperor.

Yes, we may lose. But what does it matter? We will learn more from playing a higher difficulty game than playing Monarch.

I know Solar has beaten Monarch. I have beaten Monarch. We are all competent enough to beat Monarch, and i know some of you have but i just don't know it.

So i am all for an emperor continents game, as the celts perhaps. I am happy with patch 1.22, i have a version with both.

We will become demigods so much faster if we play above our difficulty level, not below it.

It's possible to set it up with both 1.15 and 1.22 without installing the whole game twice?!!? HOW!?
I MUST KNOW!!!

I agree about Emperor level... I've never yet won a full game on Regent or Monarch, but that's just cause usually by the middle ages, I've already assured victory and often just abandon the game out of boredom.
Anyway, I think it would be awful waste to build the Doom Fleet of Continental Defense without setting up a war or three to test our defenses... It would sure make the game funner!
I'm gonna probably have to skip this round though... I have another important test in just two weeks (with part two a week later) and I barely know the stuff at even a basic level...
I regrettably doubt I'll get a chance to play again on this SG... A few days after part two of the big exam, I'm going off to Germany for two weeks.

Consider this a got-it.

I have not yet finished an entire game on monarch, but I have completed the only ages that matters, the ancient age. It is my experience that if the human survives the ancent and middle ages, the game is his- and this I've done.

DGT webpage updated. :)

If you don't mind, could you guys post your ids for whatever messengers you have? It'd be great if we could communicate with one another outside of the forums, should they ever go down for maintainence or something.

MSN: smellincoffee at Hotmail is my address for this.
AIM: Smellincoffee003

I can use Yahoo, but prefer not to. I'm on that as smellincoffee, as well.

Seems the simplest way is to make a copy of the conquests directory under Civ3 and label it Conquests1.15 or something you like. Install the 1.22 patch and then launch the proper conquests exe from the proper directory. I've seen mention that this works fine, without the need to move the directories back and forth. Again, I haven't done this yet myself so I'm not entirely convinced. I know the developers recommended moving the files back and forth when they were deploying 1.15 over 1.12.

I've also seen mention of just installing and uninstalling the patches as needed. That just seems crazy to me though. Yuck.

Anyhow, it sounds like Oblivion has proof of concept done, so he should be able to chime in on the best way.

Off to Germany? Sounds like fun. Enjoy.

Moi?

I copied my 1.15 folder to a new folder, which i called C3C1.22
(psst, delete all your 1.15 saved games first)

Then i patched this extra version of 1.15 up to 1.22 then put two shortcuts on my desktop called 1.15 and 1.22

Easy Peasy

Thought it might be something like that... I'll try it out tomorrow. :D

I'm expecting Germany to be an adventure in the worst case, more likely a pleasant visit... The catch is, the couple that invited me and my sister over at their expense speaks only German and Schwebisch - the local dialect - and because of this we are going through a crash course on the German language... I doubt my grammar and vocabulary will be up to the challenge of day-to-day types of conversations, so I am a bit anxious about the whole thingy... Luckily, about half the time, perhaps more, we will be staying with other contacts in the area, who conveniently know English. ^_^

EDIT:
My contact info:
ICQ: 117270057
Yahoo!: michsapsf
AIM: SF266
MSN/Email: msappir -at- gamer -dot- co -dot- il
Feel free to contact me in any of these ways, just make sure to tell me who you are - I use Trillian and have a few hundred contacts... I realized a bit too late that I should be careful about adding all and sundry to my list, so now I'm working on over-compensating. :P

Cool, i hope you enjoy Germany :)
I myself speak fluent German, but don't worry about the language. When i went to Germany two years ago the people were very friendly about it. They knew i was nevous about saying something completely ridiculous and were good about it.

And believe me you can say some ridiculous things by accident in German. I meant to say to the people i was staying with 'its hot in here' once. Unfortunately i accidently said something to the equivalent of 'i'm feeling horny'. Ah well, we all had a good laugh.

I only wish I would have started earlier. :(
I like the language, I learn quickly, but they only invited us just a few weeks ago...
Anyway, our hostess says that if we have to speak with our Haenden und Fuessen then that's what we'll do. :)
