DGIT4-Maelstrom at Sea

Aww, schmugiggles.
I'll play it later today.

K, got it, gonna play it now, should be done quickly I think.

Turn 0 (3000BC):
All seems to be in order.

IBT: Arabians kill both barbarians, two Arabian warriors have 2/3 hp, other Warrior and Archer head towards us (or towards Damascus, depends how you look at it. ;) Chinese are moving in our general direction with a warrior and a settler.
Turn 1 (2950BC):
Worker starts to mine the tile he's on, curraghs and warriors explore.

IBT: Arabian units move around way down south.
Turn 2 (2900BC):
Exploration, nothing interesting.

IBT: Arabian Warrior+Archer keep moving towards us and not towards Damascus, two Chinese archers are seen heading towards us as well.
Turn 3 (2850BC):
Island to the north turns out to be mostly jungle so far, then some plains and a hill with the chance of a few grassland tiles. Only way Settler will come in with growth (in two turns) is to work a mountain instead of a BG... Should have done this last turn and we'd save a turn on both growth and production, but it's too late for that now.

Turn 4 (2800BC):
Potential grasslands in the northern island turn out to be marshes. Yay. =|
Once galleys come in we may want to attempt some suicide runs north of the chinese, there's a sea corridor there that probably leads to some land.

IBT: Arabian Settler+Warrior move in our direction out of their western chunk.
Turn 5 (2750BC):
Settler -> Spearman
Settler heads NW to grab a spot in forested in plains before the Arabs do.
Incense, hills, and forests sighted north of marshes and jungles in the island up north.

IBT: Arabs keep moving towards us with both of their stacks. I hope getting our spearman in a few turns will dishearten them, cause otherwise we're dead meat.
Turn 6 (2710BC):
Warrior discovers Silks (two sources) in southern tundra forests.
Arabia are ahead of us by Mysticism and The Wheel. We're ahead of China by Pottery and CB. Our 90 gold will buy us nothing.

IBT: Arabian Warrior+Archer reach our border!!!
Turn 7 (2670BC):
Worker completes mine, moves to nearby hill to mine that as well. Spearman due in 3, Arabs can capture the undefended city by then if they want to. Switch to Warrior which will be in next turn. Warriors will have to do till we're safe enough to get spears.
Grasslands discovered west of hills and forests in northern island (which is in fact a continent by now.) Coast is seen east of China, it's probably the western coast of our chunk, but I'll head over to it over the small sea gap next turn.
Settler pops Barbarians out of goody hut. Holy crap. Sorry gang, I was absolutely sure I read a post by a Firaxis guy saying huts only pop barbs when there are no settlers or workers nearby. Argh.
Checking if the Arabs want our 91 gold for their tech I absent mindedly accidentally threaten for it rather than asking if I can trade something for it. They refuse of course, and are now Annoyed at us. I am a failure. :'(

IBT: Arabs settle a bit SW of Damscus, barbs kill our settler and move into our territory, arabs move towards barbs rather than into our city radius.
Turn 8 (2630BC):
Warrior -> Warrior
Worker starts mining hill.
Ottomans contacted in northern continent. We have Alphabet and they don't, tehy have the wheel and Iron Working. They don't wanna give us Iron for both the tech and the gold so I'll wait a bit - Iron Working can be an important bargaining chip.

IBT: Barbs keep moving into our territory towards our worker, Arabs keep moving around outside (and a stack appears on our eastern border.)
Turn 9 (2590BC):
Our warriors start heading home where they will soon be needed.

IBT: Barbs kill our worker. I am a failure, please shoot me. I can't believe I forgot to move that guy.
Turn 10 (2550BC):
Nothing.

Summary: Basically, I screwed up badly, twice, and we're toast.
I don't consider this a total disaster because this is our first game on Demi-God and it's quite a leap to here from Emperor.
Still, I'm sorry I screwed up our attempt, and I hope we somehow manage to recover from the loss of both of our non-combat units. ><

Ouch. Rough set of turns, Blas. A settler and a worker? Oooh. That stings. Well, maybe SK can pull us through. And as you said, its our first attempt at DG. Try, try again. On the bright side, no one attacked us yet. :D Don't worry about it Blas. Its all part of the learning experience. :goodjob:

I haven't looked at the saves, but with both the Arabs and Chinese getting close already, we may want to settle a bit tighter than OCP to optimize unit movement and to be able to build out a number of cities. The thing is, at the higher levels especially, the extra defensive strength you can gain from a somewhat tighter build offsets the loss of future optimal growth since you won't be able to work your 21 tiles for quite a long time.

Someone remind me. As a seafaring civ, don't we get some sort of bonus when it comes to curraghs and sea lanes? Or just extra movement points?

Good point.
Along with the movement point I think Harbors are cheap, and we don't sink as easily at sea.
China's still far off, they're just heading our way.

Ouch! Blas, the rule is this... a settler CANNOT be popped if you have a settler, or a settler in production. You CANNOT pop a hut and get barbs if you don't have a warrior or spear. If you have any kind of military, you can almsot be esured getting a barb, unless your expansionist.

As for seafearing a few tricks....

1) Get another curragh out, and make contacts. If we met everyone first, we get a tech monoply. Hopefully the other civs in the game aren't seafaring. I live when expansionist civs get stuck on archeplego maps.;)

2) Build along the coast first, then settle inland. Any coastal city gets +1 gold in the city radius, which means our tech pace will be doubled for the first 10 turns. We should be able to learn another tech just by city placement.;)

3) We're probably goners in this game. Lossing 30 food, and 40 shields by turn 30 is a death scentence. We're going to be basically 30 turns behind the AI at this point. The Arabs will probably kill us in 20 turns.

I don't know. I like tricks 1 and 2. But trick #3 I don't think I'm too fond of. ;) Well let's see what happens.

I got it guys, sorry for the silence, was nursing my fiance for a few days, she has just had her wisdom teeth removed, and could hardly talk, but she is a fighter and will be better soon.

Well here is my first try at Demi - God level, here goes nothing. :D.

SK.

How are we placing cities, my idea was to place them close enough for warriors etc to travel between them in 1 turn, is that too close?

No, that's PERFECT! I doubt most of these cities will get beyond size 12, so anywhere between 9-12 tiles to work is more then plenty.

If we go a cities radius of 9, next to another, and keep using that, it will give us no overlap, with very little sprawl. And NO it's not ICS.

Thanks Alerum, well the capital is now barb free, so we are on the way up again.

Pre - Turn thoughts:

Tech situation:

The chinese are down pottery and CB,
Arabs down Alpha, Up Wheel and Myst
Ottos up wheel and IW, down alpha.

Diplomatic Situation:

Peace with all. (for now)

Military Situation:

Weak compared to all :(

We have 1 warrior in capital, another due in a turn, another 2 exploring to the sw.

1 curragh out exploring to the NW, another to the extreme W.

Plan:

If the capital survives the barbarian raids, my priorities will be to get a settler out, and establish a second city, then to get our worker back asap, then we shall see from there.

Here goes everything.

IBT: one of the barbs to the west of the capital is killed by the arabs, the barb warrior to the east of capital beats itself to death on our defensive warrior, redlining it but then promoting it to vet.

phew!

Turn 1 2510 BC:

Trondheim: Warrior -> Settler.

exploration.

IBT:

Our capital is now barb free :D

Turn 2 2470 BC:

Just notice we can turn lux off, till capital grows again, so i do.

Looks like the arabs have alpha, ah well, i think i missed an oppurtunity there, so Im going to trade with the ottos before I miss it again, so wheel and 20 gold for alpha.

Turn 3 2430 BC:

Chinese start collosus, maybe it will help them get out of the hole they are in.

Exploration.

Turn 4 2390 BC:

Exploration, dont like thelook of that arab archer, warrior pair near capital, so bring exploring warrior back closer to capital.

Turn 5 2350 BC:

Meet Russia, trade alpha and 10 gold for Myst.

Russia moves from annoyed to cautious.

Pottery and CB gives us IW and 5 gold from china, they go to polite.

We have Iron near the capital!! Woohoo!!

Turn 6 2310 BC:

Trondheim: Settler -> Warrior.

moving settler into position near the iron.

Turn 7 2270 BC:

movement.

Turn 8 2230 BC:

Our settler is in position.

more exploration.

Turn 9 BC:

Bergen founded, next to the iron, set to warrior, we are coming back guys!

Turn 10 2150 BC:

Trondheim: Warrior -> Worker.

more exploration.

Summary:

Well, I think we are on the way back, sandrock its up to you now, there is a worker on the way in trondheim, bergen is too small for a worker, until the warrior is built it will be impossible to build one.

we have Iron in our radius, so we need that online ASAP, time to get back into the game.

Good luck to the next player.

SK.

Very Nicely done SK. Good tech trading to keep us alive. Lets try and get cities along the coast though, for the +1 gold.

I agree alerum, just couldn't risk the AI stealing our Iron, there seem to be a lot of arab units around, which made me a little uncomfortable, although most are probably their free units.

Nice job SK. Way to grab that iron. Hopefully we can get some sort of settler factory going to try and make up some ground. So that leaves Sandrock up next. If he's not able to play until Thursday, I might be able to swap a turn in the mean time. I'll let him state his preference first though.

Well saved, SK!
I propose we rename the new town Phoenixburg in honor of the occasion. :D

I'm here guys, just got power and phone back. I have one medium tree and one small tree down in my yard, not counting the hundreds of smaller limbs...

Hurricanes aren't fun. :(

The important thing is that you're okay and it doesn't sound like y'all suffered much if any damage. I just received a bit o' rain way up here in Jersey, but less than 30 miles to my west, along the Delaware, a lot of people are having problems as the river spilled over its banks and is flooding out a lot of homes. At least for now, there don't appear to be any more storms immediately threatening. :)
