DGIT4-Maelstrom at Sea

Sorry about the late pickup guys. Fortunately I still have a day off to play this on. Expect a post sometime Saturday. It looks like we've already reverted to 10 turns so I'll take that as well. Looks like I get to hook up some iron.

Only Arabia is up a tech(Mathematics)
We are on par with everyone else

I see a couple of luxuries available. The most promising is the spices to the SE. We're still a ways away from getting another settler. The Arabs are also making me nervous with all of their units. We are going to have to be really lucky to survive this one. Land is disappearing fast.

And sorry about the non-zip. I'm having a little trouble with the computer.

Wow. We are hurting. Only two cities.
Arabs: 8 cities, up math.
Chinese: 7 cities, even in tech.
Russia: 7 cities, even in tech.
Ottomans: 4 cities, even in tech.
England: 5 cities, even in tech.
Luxures - none at the moment. Spices to our east. Silks far south, will likely be taken by Arabs.
We have No settlers on line and we are not growing fast at all. We need settlers or we are toast.
Either that, or build for very limited war and grow by aquisition. If we last that long...

Both of our workers are on the iron. I'm unsure if this is the right move as we need growth and commerce, but I'll let it slide to attach the iron. It may be our only shot.

[0] 1750BC
We have three curraghs and are building another? I think not. Switch Trondheim to spearman. Will start settler afterwards.
Bergen switches to rax.

Okay. Have to ask. What upgrades to beserks? Archers or warriors? Beserks are longbow replacements, are they not? Maybe we should be pursuing an archer rush on the arabs, knowing the troops can be upgraded in the future?

There's a mine next to Trondheim with no road?

IBT
Pirate ship comes in view of a curragh.

[1] 1725BC
Moving around. Curraghs exploring. Iron will be connected in two.

IBT
Spear completes in Trondheim. Settler due in 8, growth in 6. Not the best timing, but we need another settler ASAP.

[2] 1700BC
Explore more...

IBT
Iron comes online. But its not connected to the capital. Sword rush?
Arab settler pair comes our way. England has math now.

[3] 1675BC
Moving around some more.

IBT
Arab troops are milling around. Settler pair heads south.
Pirate boat chases us around 1 tile island off English coast.

[4] 1650BC
Our curragh, being pursued by the pirate, flees back to English coast and spots Spain to the English north. Isabella is up Math as well, has 6 cities and iron and wines hooked up.
Another exploring curragh, heads north and on last turn spots another pirate ship. Arrr.

IBT
Hmmm. Abu would like a gift of 29 gold. Why, sure Abu. In the spirit of peace, afterall.
Two of our curraghs come under siege. One meets Davy Jone's locker. The other lives, barely to continue its explorations off the Ottoman mega island.

[5] 1625BC
Spain knows horseback riding now. Russia knows math.

IBT

[6] 1600BC
Curragh off Ottoman super island spots a yellow border. We may hang around to hopefully make contact. Chinese have city on chokepoint separating themselves from us and the Arabs on the other side of the tundra expanse.

IBT
If I didn't know any better, I'd think the Arab settler pair is heading for the spices to our east.

[7] 1575BC
Curragh continued on and spotted a Mongol city to the north. Nice. We can work with this. :goodjob: Temujin is up Horseback, but lacks Masonry, alphabet, and Mysticism.
Masonry to the Mongols for Horseback riding and 93 gold.
Arabs have the most money, but they'll likely demand some back...
Trade Horseback to Russia for Mathematics and 87 gold.
Mysticism to Mongols for 147 gold.
We are even up in tech, and have lots of gold for sword upgrades.

IBT

[8] 1550BC
MM Trondheim to get settler 1 sooner.

IBT
Trondheim produces settler (and there was much rejoicing!), starts rax.
Bergen rax -> sword
English start SoZ
Arab city of Fustad appears to our immediate south.

[9] 1525BC
Arabs have Polytheism and 10(!) cities. Ahem. We have... 2.

IBT
Mongols would like us to move our Curragh along. Okay. See some arab archers moving east.

[10] 1500BC
Settler moves into position on coast to the east of Trondheim. Curraghs move along.
Switch Berger to settler, due in 9 with growth timed the same. We need to think about how to get settlers out more quickly. We may be forced to expand overseas as the Arabs are going to make things tough to do much here. We need a lux which is available to our east so that should be a priority. But with our cities pop 1 and 2 right now, no lux is needed. :D

We are far, far behind. But who knows. Maybe we can still dig out of this. Diplo win? Small, small wars maybe and grow out? But we NEED settlers asap.

Our empire. Heh.

Whoa. Make three separate posts and they merge? How cool (unless we get a max pic limit error...)!

Yes, Zerks upgrade from Archers but are very expensive. Will need to build leo's to make it managable, so need to plan for a prebuild at some time. This game isn't very promising, but I'm not ready to give it up yet.

SC, you're up? Can you take the save?

Not promising, true. But if we can somehow hold on and survive, we might be able to squeeze out a diplo win. Thankfully its a sprawling archipelago at least. We should only have to contend with the Arabs and Chinese to any great extent. Then again, two chivalry age UUs to contend with...

If we can somehow crank up our expansion, we should be able to lay down an number of cities on this landmass, and we should try and get a city or two started on the landmass just across from us. Its close enough where corruption won't kill us there. If we don't, you know the Arabs will. Unfortunately, most of that land immediately north is a jungle mess.

This game will prove to be a rather interesting DG game and a great test for our team. :D

In between classes now, will grab sometime later today. Discussion?

Not much to discuss at this point. With only two cities, the turns go by quick. We have a handful of warriors. With iron hooked up and some money in the bank, we could perform some upgrade and setup a small attack. But with the Arabs at 10 cities and China at 8, we will probably be overwhelmed very quickly. Maybe not the best direction to take.

I say figure out a way to start pumping settlers. Settle cities on the coast for the extra commerce. You won't have time to do much. It might be wise to build a granary to help settle quicker. Currently settlers take quite a while to spit out of our little towns.

I think if you stay out of wars for your turns, settle a city or two (one settler is pretty much in place to share the wheat) then you've done your job. I think writing should come up in your turns as well. The AI doesn't seem to be researching it yet.

Got it, playing shortly.

Inherited Turn
"Demigod". Wow, that's the first time my game has ever seen that "Loaded" message. Swap Trondheim over to Granary.

Turn 1- 1475 BC
Copenhagen founded. I'm going to hope that our Arabian friends are going to whack a barbarian camp.

Turn 2- 1450 BC
Nada.

Turn 3- 1425 BC
Writing done, go after Philosophy. Arabians building Artemis.

Turn 4- 1400 BC
English building Oracle. English done with Pyramids. Chinese switch to Oracle. Arabs switch to Artemis. Spanish swi- oh, never mind.

Turn 5- 1375 BC The Intrepid spots the Chinese founding Tatung.

Turn 6- 1350 BC
Nothing much.

Turn 7- 1325
Nothing much...

Turn 8- 1300 BC
Nothing much. Arabs will give us 200 for HBR.

Turn 9- 1275 BC
Settler done, will head for those fish north of Trondhiem. Establish embassy in Russia. They're at war with the Ottomans. I find this out when Russia asks me for an alliance versus the Ottomans. We of course politely decline the offer. Spanish complete Oracle.

Turn 10- 1250 BC
Settler and warrior depart the city. Where they go next is up to the next player's decisions, but I personally like the fish NE of Trondhiem.

You may be wondering why I opened an embassy with the Russians. The answer is this. When I was playing the set, she demanded Writing. I made a misclick. :( Since I hadn't been saving, I was forced to play the set over again, relying on my notes for what I did. This time I decided to avoid having to make that decision (if Russia decided to demand again) by making nice with them. You decide: out of war with Russia, the loss of Writing, or the loss of 52 gold, which would you prefer?

Heh. And a whole lot more fun when you see our two lone cities... :D Nice set of turns. The granary switch was the right move, too.

Hmmm. Not knowing the above? Seriously, my personal preference is to try and replay the turn exactly as it was playing out, expecting the Russians to demand again. But it would be hard to overcome the urge to avoid that situation again upon replay. I'm obviously fine with the results, although I fully expect we'll be handing over writing not too long from now anyhow. As much as war would have not been ideal, they are a bit far from us and it probably would have been phony... then again  .

Anyhow, nice set.

I think that leaves Alerum up next?

They're a sea away. I didn't want to risk them bringing in other nations (like the Arabians, for instance) or depriving us of a potential trading partner... :D

Potential trading partner? Hah! Um, Catherine. How would you like some of our our, er, grass? Yeah. We have lots of it. Sea water too. Have you heard about the benefits of some fine Scandinavian Salt? No? Okay, you have us. We've been holding out. Sure, we'd be happy to open an Ikea franchise in Moscow! :crazyeye:

Anyways, I hear you. So when would Abu like our writing?

Alerum? Skip? What's next, pigs flying?
