This is kind of random, but does anyone know the origin of this film/literary meme?

Protagonist is talking with a presumed friend/advisor. The presumed friend/advisor warns, "Don't trust anybody."

Later, the trusted friend/advisor reveals themselves to be a traitor, and smugly quips "Didn't I warn you not to trust anybody?".

A recent prominent example is Game of Thrones. Another one that sticks out in my mind is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

I know this happens in many stories, but off the top of my head I can't think of an older example. Google hasn't been much help so far.

What's the oldest example you can think of of this occurring in film or literature? Is it just one of those things that's as old as story-telling?

There's a site solely dedicated to this sort of stuff. What you're describing sounds like what they file under I Lied.

That's an interesting site. Never been there before. Their entry for "treacherous advisor" also sort of fits the bill. Thanks

You're welcome. Don't blame me for lost hours though ;)

I think that phrase was from the last Indiana Jones movie. I saw in movie theaters at the time.

I really wish I could find Rainier Wolfcastle's line about the cake on YouTube, but it seems like they're pretty good at keeping out Simpsons clips.

Oh, not TVTropes!
There goes any chance I had of being productive for the next couple hours.
