Important Words on the Update and all future Updates
This update only reflects the first twenty-four hours of the Change and the chaos which takes place, meaning no food is consumed and we are within the critical first stage of the failure of modern technology. Governments are more or less still functioning on a local level and though things may be bad in some areas, the majority of the world still isn't quite sure what is going on.
Updates will generally present your character's group with a dilemma or problem which they must confront and preserve against. This is fully linked to your own critical thinking and choices, choose poorly, and you will die. Your orders can be in whatever format you choose, there are no spending orders to be made or units to build. The question at hand is truly what your character will do to survive in the course of the apocalypse. I greatly encourage creative writing, and you're going to have to be clever to make it through this one alive. For the bare minimum of orders, all I ask is that you answer the dilemma present to you in the form of the update. For this first update, it'll be pretty simple, most local governments will be declaring martial law, and it'll be up to you whether you stay where you are or flee for whatever hills may be nearby. That is the first choice of the NES, and perhaps the most critical. Anything else you put on top of your decision is entirely up to you, there's no real limits except avoid the impossible, i.e., flapping your arms to fly to safety.
Each update will be a week's time chronologically, and in order to avoid real life time being equal to NES time, I hope to go for two updates a week, at the least. Ideally, updates will be on Sunday and Wednesday evenings, so keep that in mind when you're planning on sending or posting orders for the NES.
Any geographic aids you wish to provide for me in your orders would be greatly appreciated, otherwise you'll have to rely upon the accuracy of wikipedia and google maps from my end.
One last thing, I did change the date of the Change, mostly because problem with New Year's is that it would have been during a bunch of parties. May as well not interrupt the celebrations.
Prelude: The Change
You've just got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
Antioch, California, United States of America
A little past midnight on March 8th, 2010, the community of Antioch was awoken by the brilliant flash of light which would eventually become known as the Change. As a sleepy suburban community, many of the local population attributed it to unknown phenomenon and soon returned to bed. Several car wrecks took place among the various roads and highways, and local authorities responded the best they were able. Upon awakening the next morning, the locals soon discovered that their vehicles would not function to take them to work in nearby San Francisco or Oakland. Regardless, local businesses opened as usual as the population wandered about, trying to figure out what was going on. An emergency meeting was held by the city government, leading to the mobilization of all reserves by the police and fire departments. Later in the day, the fires which had begun to consume the larger nearby cities began to send their smoke to the sky, and a few battered bicyclists arrived in town, claiming that the disaster may have been worse than anyone in town believed.
Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
Eight o'clock in the morning on March 8th, 2010, proved to be the bloodiest day in Belfast's brutal history of conflict and violence. The citizens of the community who were not already awake soon were disrupted from their rest by massive explosions from Belfast International and George Best Belfast airports. Planes crashed in takeoff or landing, and the gasoline fuelled fires quickly spread to the terminals, catching many in the great flames. In the morning commute, numerous cars crashed into each other, though the early traffic rush meant mostly just small fender-benders. The fires caused by the failure of modern technology and the lack of working fire engines, soon led to the local emergency response teams being overwhelmed. As the day drew towards its closure, and authorities continued to be overwhelmed, the local members of radical branches of the former Irish Republican Army attacked old rivals, adding human violence to the growing problems. Arson and murder ran rampant as retaliations took place throughout the day. Without guns and British support, the local police were easily overwhelmed by the sectarian violence, leaving many people barricading themselves in their homes as conflict and looting grew in the streets.
Reykjavik, Iceland
As with most major cities at the time of the Change, Reykjavik was interrupted in the morning by explosions at the local airport. Fortunately only two planes were in the air at the time, leading to easily contained fires, which failed to spread to the local terminal. Several car wrecks did take place, but results were minimal. Though the Icelandic population of the community were concerned about the incident, the only result was the deployment of the police reserves and an immediate city council meeting, along with the national government's leaders being called into emergency session, of those which could be located. The government has declared a nation-wide curfew, sending out couriers to establish the status of the other communities of the island. Food stores were closed during the day, as the police were rallied to prevent looting and civil disobedience. By the end of the first day, Reykjavik was one of the few cities in Europe in which order remained at the hands of the government.
Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
As most families were gathered around the television or otherwise engaged in dinner or going to bed, the brilliant flash of white light known as the Change struck Hobart, Australia. With most people home and no nearby airports, the average individual remained unaffected or unaware of the Change and its effects. Though some elderly individuals were killed when their pacemakers failed, no one really knew what to make of the sudden lack of lighting. The local police remained vigilant and several would-be looters were arrested when they attempted to use the cover of darkness to burglarize several businesses. The night passed mostly uneventfully, and most people slept soundly. With dawn the next morning and increasing concern over the situation, it became obvious that the problem may not quickly restore itself. The local government hastily met and various stores were placed under guard, as the authorities attempted to determine what occurred. Several crowds ultimately converged upon the Tasmanian state capital building, and no answer was given, as the governor appealed for calm, promising that all efforts were being made to ascertain the problem.
Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America
In the early morning hours of March 8, 2010, the people of Atlanta were jarred out of bed by the searing light which heralded the Change. The airport soon shattered the immediate silence of modern machinery, as explosions ripped through the night, as numerous planes crashed, and fires spread without any form of control. Fast moving cars and traffic on the local interstates soon resulted in other explosions and chaos along the roads, as the notorious speed of the city's drivers resulted in high speed crashes into several buildings. Downtown Atlanta soon raged in an inferno and chaos as parked cars exploded from the flames, and drowsy but panicked citizens fled in the streets. Civil authority was quickly overwhelmed, as the police were incapable of dealing with the rioting and looting which soon interrupted. Officers who attempted to preserve order were usually murdered by those they were attempting to halt. The suburbs of Atlanta initially escaped unscathed, but as the day progressed, the chaos entered into the surrounding areas around the downtown of the city.
Park City, Utah, United States of America
Park City was fast asleep at the time of the Change, as the people rested easy in the early morning hours of the day. As a quiet community, after the flash of light which was felt all around the world, only the telltale silence of modern machinery marked any difference for the small town. The morning power outage was attributed to many to a small earthquake or perhaps another natural phenomenon, and business continued as usual throughout most of the day. A small crashed plane outside of town did lead some to believe that the problem may have been more severe than otherwise believed, but the city government promised that help would soon be on its way from the outside world.
New York City, New York, United States of America
New York City was arguably the hardest hit urban center in the United States of America in the first few hours of the change. The first casualties were those who became trapped, perhaps indefinitely in the city's innumerable elevators and subway cars, halted by the lack of electricity. Inevitably fires started in numerous apartments and houses, as candles fell and fires became out of control. This was exacerbated by the usual array of car wrecks, and even an unfortunate plane crash into several buildings. Without working modern equipment and proper organization, fire department response was inefficient and unorganized. The fires of the disaster continued to rise and rise, and people fled their homes. Looting began quickly and the New York Police Department was overwhelmed, as the officers found themselves stabbed or beaten to death by street gangs and unruly citizens. Looting quickly rose up throughout the city, and throughout most of the day, the disorderly mob which the city became drowned in a orgy of blood and violence. Refugees fled into the surrounding parts of the countryside, overwhelming other smaller communities, and bringing looting and confusion with them.
Mexico City, Mexico
As the seat of Mexican government and easily the largest city in the country, the Mexican government declared martial law and deployed nearby military units to maintain order throughout the metropolitan area. The lack of viability of guns as a weapon ultimately became obvious to looters and locals gains, and smaller units were overwhelmed by thugs in the various parts of the city. Street gangs took the opportunity to both avenge themselves upon their enemies as well as looting various jewelry stores and malls. As in other countries and cities, the community was plagued by several plane crashes, which left the airport in ruins, and leveled several city blocks before several buildings were demolished by determined citizens. Though some resemblance of order has been maintained where the gangs were unable to overwhelm the military and the government is somewhat functioning, panicked looting of food stores soon led to growing unrest and violence throughout the city.
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Sydney was hard hit by the Change, as five different planes fell short of the International Airport, leading not only to the typical destruction on the tarmac, but massive fires and devastation in the city center. The situation grew worse as the water pumps which fed the city soon ran dry with electricity shutting down, and fires were far too much out of control for any repair. Military forces attempted to preserve order in areas where they were located, but panicking mobs and looters soon overwhelmed their best efforts. The impotency of modern law enforcement quickly became apparent and local gangs and criminals hastily began rampant looting and chaos throughout the community. As March 10th approached, the city continued to burn out of control and the populace remained in a state of frenzied panic.
Columbus, Ohio, United States of America
The light of the Change brought down fiery death upon the city of Columbus, as the city's large amount of airfields and airports soon led to numerous crashes throughout the region. The proportionately small population and emergency services did their best to contain the growing flames, but uncountable thousands likely died asleep as the fires consumed their homes. The devastation grew throughout the day, leaving many dead as the remnants of local civil authority disappeared into the chaos. As in other parts of the United States and the world, local gangs and ordinary civilians, in the initial panic began swarming over local stores, searching for food and other supplies. The average citizen has barricaded himself in his house, loading his guns, as most seem to be unaware of the full extent of the Change.
Smokey Mountains, Alabama, United States of America
The tranquility of the mountain ranges of the southeastern United States proved mostly undisturbed by the onset of the Change. Though some few campers were awoken by the searing white light, many returned to bed after assuring that the situation in their immediate vicinity had not changed. The next morning, the obvious failure of cell phones and vehicles caused further concern, but campers mostly stayed in place in their little section of the wilderness.
Western Maryland, United States of America
Moderator's Note to the Player: I had a devil of a time trying to figure out where "Tri-Towns" is supposed to be, and I proved unsuccessful in my efforts. Therefore, your section is generalized for the whole of western Maryland.
Western Maryland suffered several plane crashes after the change, starting some small brush fires, but urban areas were left fairly untouched by the Change. Despite the awakening of the great white light, many local residents soon returned to sleep, to awaken to the stark reality of the new world the next morning. Local community governments kept a close watch, as the first refugees from the eastern coast of the United States began to arrive. By the closure of the day, it became more and more apparent that what happened may not have been an isolated incident.
Tel Aviv, Israel
Tel Aviv was fortunate to survive the initial onslaught of crashing vehicles that plagued much of the world during the course of the first stage of the Change. Though the fires and smoke from Ben Guron International Airport were eventually seen, the city itself only suffered through several minor car crashes, which produced no initial fatalities. The power outage and failure of modern technology resulted in several deaths scattered through the urban area, and martial law was soon declared by the local military garrison, and police and soldiers were deployed in full riot gear. Without working cars or public transportation, the home commute occurred essentially the same, but slower. When night fell, the true bloodshed began for the Israel city. Islamic agitators used the opportunity to attack the Israeli soldiers, who were unknowningly left weakened with the lack of working firearms caused by the Change. The Islamic leaders discovered this earlier and used it to their advantage, and several Israeli police and military units were overwhelmed. Fires started during the evening from botched civilian efforts to provide lighting as well as civil disorder. Tel Aviv soon became backlit by a series of gruesome urban infernos, while religious violence began to dominate the streets well into the morning of March 9th.
Estacada, Oregon, United States of America
Estacada was small enough not to grasp the whole consequences of the Change in the early hours of the day. While not far from the larger city of Portland, the lack of any overhead planes or significant automotive traffic meant that the rest of the evening passed essentially uneventful. The next morning, upon the discovery of the failure of modern technology, a town meeting led to no cause, though the town government deployed police guards to the local grocery stores and banks. Limited normal business occurred during the day, as most of the population awaited word from the outside world, word which had not yet arrived by the next evening.
Miami, Florida, United States of America
As the fourth largest urban area in the United States, Miami was quick to devolve into the fiery chaos which typified the world's cities during the change. Miami International Airport became a cauldron of flame, as did any surrounding suburbs and businesses, causing a spreading fire which began to consume much of the outskirts, pushing fleeing people into the urban frying pan. Gangs soon overwhelmed any police attempts to maintain order, and South Beach and other wealthy parts of the city were overrun by looters. In a way, Miami was fortunate as only two plane crashes occurred within the metropolitan area, but fires spread out of control throughout much of the day as people tried to flee or embroiled themselves in the erupting gang violence.
World Map
As a word of advice, it'll be hard to actually locate the dots on the map which represent players. My recommendation is to simply use the text location description in the stats post over the map. I'll be simply updating the world map on the first post, until we reach the second phase of the NES.
