DisNES II "A Twist of Fate"

Orders will cum tonight hopefully unless my internet connect spazzes out as it usually does in which case it will cum tommrow morning.

Screams and gunshots echoed across the frozen battlefield. Men and horses lay dying on the icy ground. Distant cannon fire sounded getting steadily closer. Alexius stumbled dazedly among the bodies that littered the ground.
Where had it gone wrong? Everything was ruined. At first he had taken power in glory and triumph his enemies had been repeatedly defeated again and again, his armies fought with loyalty and ferocity. But then his fortune abandoned him. His offensives faltered and turned back. And now here he was. The Poles and Swedes had annihilated his army and the Dalanrossians were clawing their way into his unprotected country. It was all over. He fell to his knees weeping. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a pistol clutched in the arms of one of his fallen Lieb Guard who had fought for him valiantly to the last. He picked up the pistol. It was fitting that the Last and Greatest Tsar of Muscovy should die among his men. He placed the pistol against his temple and pulled the trigger.

****************************************************************************

The French Prince Alexius awoke with a start his head throbbing with pain. He glanced around the extravagant room in shock. He stumbled out of the bed and walked to the window. Where was he?

The view from the window was one of a massive sprawling garden with fountains, pathways, and marble statues. This was nothing like he had ever seen before. He clutched his head which was experiencing continued shooting pains. He collapsed back into the bed and fell into unconsciousness.

Alexius awoke wearily, and propped himself against the pillows. His blurry vision eventually cleared and the face of an old man who was sitting at the foot of his bed materialized. He worked his dry tongue over his cracked and swollen lips and croaked out “Who are you?”

The man handed him a cup of water in response that he hastily gulped down. “I am your physician, you have been suffering from a touch of the fever my lord”

“Where am I?” asked Alexius

”You are in the palace of course,” he said looking at Alexius curiously

“And where is the palace?”

“Paris of course, are you still feeling ill my liege?”

Alexius glanced down at his at his hands flexing them. He was alive and well. Yet he had somehow ended up in France. Suddenly a thought struck him. “A map!” he shouted

The physician stared in confusion “What my lord?”

“A map! Bring me a map immediately!” He convulsively clutched the forearm of the physician “I must have a map!”

“Um… yes of course!” said the physician calling for the servants at the door to carry out the prince’s request.

The servants came in an unrolled a map of Europe on his bed. He stared at it for several moments and tears rolled down his cheek, “Oh Muscovy, you have survived and triumphed!” then he frowned “Where is the Federate Kingdoms? And Dalanrossia? It simply disappeared? The Ottoman Empire has revived?”

The servants glanced and one and other and hastily withdrew. “What year is it?” Alexius asked

“The year seventeen hundred my lord”

Alexius stared at the map for several more moments before understanding finally dawned on him. This was a different reality. Muscovy did not exist nor any history he knew. He had a completely different life in a completely different country. Yet he was alive and he remembered all. He had a second chance now. And he would not fall this time.

The Kingdom of France announces a wrecthed conspiracy between the Holy Roman Empire, and Aragon to to invade and destroy France. France will take suitable measures against this, any invasion by Aragon and the HRE will be utterly destroyed. Be warned we will not tolerate threaths on the power and sovergnity of the Kingdom of France.

OOC: In other words this calls for Alexius. Whats the French equivlaent of that?

There once was a little nation which cried and cried and cried.

Then it got invaded.

Alexis would be the french equivalent. Alexandre would be an ever more french name, however.

Alfonso VII, King of All the Crown of Aragon

Prince of Naples

As the second son of the recently deceased King, Alfonso VI, Alfonso was created at birth the Prince of Naples and was raised at the Royal court in Naples in accordance with the long-held traditions of the Crown of Aragon. There, he was tutored by both Neapolitan and Aragonese tutors, as well as a Venetian, a German and a Greek exile. He showed an early proficiency for language, and quickly developed fluency in the learned tongues of Latin and Greek as well as in Aragonese, Castilian, Neapolitan, Catalan, German, and French. At the urging of his Greek tutors, he also took up the study of Arabic so as to better understand his foes, and a Christian tutor from Egypt was hired. Far from focusing only on languages, Alfonso also became well-versed in the physical sciences and became an accomplished alchemist, publishing a study of his own. He also showed a flair for diplomatic finesse, exemplified by his exemplary handling of his first courtly visit by the King of England on the English king's tour of Italy.

Prince of Barcelona

Upon the untimely death of his elder brother, Stephen, Prince of Barcelona, Alfonso succeeded him as heir apparent to the Crown of Aragon and removed his court from Naples to Barcelona at the age of seventeen. Shortly thereafter, he was wed to the beautiful Joan of Genoa, daughter of the Lord Protector of Genoa and a vassal to his father. At the age of eighteen, his first child, a son, Prince Martin of Barcelona, was born, securing the succession to the throne.

King of All the Crown of Aragon

In the year 1700, King Alfonso VI, now aged 71 years, died in his sleep in the Royal Palace at Palermo, where he had been making a Royal visit to the island of Sicily. After a period of mourning lasting one month, The Prince of Barcelona was invested as King of the Crown of Aragon in the city of Saragossa. With the tragedy of his brother's and father's deatsh behin him, the twenty-two-year-old King of the Crown of Aragon now had a bright future ahead of him.

Formal Regnal title: His Royal and Most Pious Majesty Alfonso, King of Aragon, Barcelona, Naples, Valencia, Sicily, Sardinia, Genoa, Corsica, and Majorca,* the Seventh of His Name, Duke of Palermo, Duke of Otranto, Duke of Tunis, Duke of Algiers, Lord and Guard of Saragossa, Lord of Menorca, Lord of Montpellier, Lord of Oran and Defender of the Faith

*OOC: The "Crown of Aragon" was considered as one entity, but Kings of Aragon were in fact kings of numerous realms considered independently rather than together. Thus, "Crown of Aragon" means the entire realm while the King is king over each individual realm, including Aragon proper. The Princedoms of the heirs to the throne are ordered in the order of precedence of the kingdoms; thus the eldest son is Prince of Barcelona, the next is Prince of Naples, the next Prince of Valencia, etc.

He could be Alexandre II after his father, and people call him Alexius to distuish him from the old man ;). Up to silver of course.

Nice story Cuivienen, you forgot "Lord of the Barbary Coast*" though in that list of titles ;).

*Or something along those lines

Aodhan was sitting in his boat, fishing away the sunny day. All was peaceful and happy, Aodhan was humming a peaceful tune, oone handed down by generations, about the Irish Homeland.

Although in cloaths, company, buildings faire
With Ireland, Affalon cannot compare:
Did some know what contentment I found there,
Alwayes enough, most times somewhat to spare,
With little paines, lesse toyle, and lesser care,
Exempt from taxings, ill newes, Lawing, feare,
If cleane, and warme, no matter what you weare,
Healthy, and wealthy, if men carefull are,
With much-much more, then I will now declare,
(I say) if some wise men knew what this were
(I doe beleeue) they'd live no other where.

His friend Rhyan was tooting on a pennywhistle, and Aodhan went into full blast.

Though ye suppose all jeperdys ar paste,
And all is done that ye lokyd for before,
Ware yet, I rede you, of Fortunes dowble cast,
For one fals poynt she is wont to kepe in store,
And vnder the fell oft festered is the sore :
That when ye thynke all daunger for to pas,
Ware of the lesard lyeth lurkyng in the gras.

When sun rays crown thy pine clad hills,
And summer spreads her hand,
When silvern voices tune thy rills,
We love thee, smiling land.

We love thee, we love thee,
We love thee, smiling land.

When spreads thy cloak of shimmering white,
At winter's stern command,
Thro' shortened day, and starlit night,
We love thee, frozen land.

We love thee, we love thee
We love thee, frozen land.

As blinding storm gusts fret thy shore,
And wild waves lash thy strand,
Thro' spindrift swirl, and tempest roar,
We love thee windswept land.

We love thee, we love thee
We love thee windswept land.

As loved our fathers, so we love,
Where once they stood, we stand;
Their prayer we raise to Heaven above,
God guard thee, Affalon

God guard thee, God guard thee,
God guard thee, Affalon

And when he tired out, they kept on fishing, and they brought in a good catch. Tonight would be a merry night around the firelight with bagpipes and Cod all around. It made Aodhan want to do a jig, but he knew that would tip the boat, so he giddly started humming again. Another beautiful day in Affalon

Since its come up a few times in the orders sets, I'm going to quote this section of the rules again

Naval Routes

In the "Misc" section is a list of naval routes you can or have unlocked. Who gets to uncover them is dependent on luck (A RNG number generator), some nations have higher chances than others, but it is out of the player control. Until you stumble on the new lands, play as if the Old World is the only world - fancies of fairy kingdoms across the seas is for dreamers, not important statesmen/women such as yourself :).

Sorry to those of you who disagree with this but there are a number of reasons both IC and OOC

a) IC: the great Iberian scientist Abraham Zacuto proved (a roughly correct) estimate as to the diameter of the earth - since then it has been assumed the western ocean is 4 thousand miles of storms and emptyness, and certainly not a shorter route to the east.

b) OOC: I'm sorry but I just don't want players using their prexisiting knowledge to fast track to the best sites in the new world - I don't want it to follow the original history, but I would like it to be realistic.

c) I won't give you the precise values, but it won't be that long before someone finds a way, so don't fret ;)

Have a nice day :D

I know I know I know that my orders are last . . . by half an hour, but please do accept them. Stupid work running late, Arg!

17 out of 22 orders so far, missing ones from Isrealite9191, Alex994, Symphony D, Stormbringer, silver2029, Thomander, Tommy_Toon, BananaLee.

Isrealite9191, since your lucky enough to be completely isolated from all other players, I can wait on your orders and do a add on to the update whenever I get them.

You other guys aren't so lucky :( - I still plan to do the update tomorrow, and if I don't wake up in about 7 hours with your orders I may have to proceed without them.

@Tommy_Toon: no probs, as you can see your in good company ;), unlike das my dealines are not absolute, but if I've done your section of the update before I get them...

Well, Stormy does have a fever....

My Internet has been dead for roughly 36 hours until just now, not exactly something I can predict in advance. You will get them when I complete them. Sent.

Orders sent, hope no one invaded me :(
