DMI IX - The Vampire Lord and the Tower of Mastery (FfH2)

The thing is, on turn 1 of the battle, the warrior was destroyed. However the axe was still sitting there, giving LoS. Unfortuately, on the next turn another meteor came out and destryed the axe itself. That is why I am worried.

I don't think an item can be destroyed, but we'll see. What's done is done, so it's no use grumbling. While the AXe is nice, its usefulness levels with the units getting more base strength...

The Roster:

Imhotep -- still savouring some chops of Thucydides for dinner
Ozbenno -- feasted on barb blood
reverend_oats >> JUST PLAYED and is cutting his nails with scissors instead of an Axe Blade
Ralph Jackson >> UP NOW as equal oppurtunity bloodsucker
Monkeyfinger >> ON DECK and sometimes plays with his food
Madtown -- still savoring his last meal

OK Got it, should have played / reported by Friday night,

Suggestions gratefully received.

Ralph

So Basically a quiet builderish turnset

Tried hard but couldn’t find a tasty neck to snack on no matter how hard I tried.

  1. Basically Capital will be tied up with Cat Lib for a while yet
  2. An extra worker or two wouldn’t go a miss+
  3. Grow our cities as we expand Happy caps
  4. Build a Stable so we can send a horseman out a fireball dodging and Axe hunting.
  5. Queue up a settler for when the fires free up a nice city site as our empire could do with expanding
  6. Follow the Council of Esus beeline

T 208 Sugar comes on line allowing us to grow our cities.

T 210 Writing in onto Philosophy as we start the beeline for C of E.

We take the civic switch to Slavery as it gets unlocked
civicswitch-1.jpg

The fire has freed up a nice looking city site down south
flamingdotmap.jpg

With Trade in opening borders should now make some sense and seems an appropriate point to hand off.
tradein.jpg

  1. Deception and Cat Lib should finish in 9
  2. Horseman en route to look for the Axe
  3. Settler due in 5

Looks like we'll need our adepts for Spring rather than Scorch.

I'd say we should start expanding down towards Acheron quickly.

I still wouldn't be adverse to a quick OO of ROK grab (we can always change later). Shrines can give us the mana we need for Tower of Mastery and Bambur or Saverous can take down Acheron.

Got the save. I will probably have my turnset up tonight, since I was ready for it this time.

Tradan gaems first.

(In case you are wondering why Sandalphon was willing to trade for two bananas: The trades were not simultaneous. Presumably he traded away the first batch we traded to him, then asked for more.)

On turn 230 the horsemen arrive at their destination and don't find what they were looking for.

DMI9-2-C.png

How lame.

On turn 232 a pair of pieces of bad news hit:

DMI9-2-D.png

So we miss out on one of the best wonders, and perpentach won't be our religious brother. But life goes on. Couple turns later:

DMI9-2-E.png

Giggity giggity goo. I revolt to it. Afterwards I do a dual civic swap: God King + Undercouncil. I also awake the prophet and found that shrine.

DMI9-2-F.png

I don't have screenshots of this but we met Mahala. Council passively spread to Mahala really, really quickly. She adopted it. We have a buddy.

Shortly after this, we become chair of the overcouncil. A disappointingly large number of turns later, we got the option to pass a resolution. We passed the slave trade, of course. We have our cheap rushbuying, which I have so far only used to rush some minor infrastructure like granaries and libraries. But I'm getting ahead of myself here.

Turn 237

DMI9-2-H.png

Balls. Now perpentach's hueg liek xbox. Shortly before Cassiel died I traded with him for a bunch of techs, including construction; we can now chain irrigate. Oh by the way I self researched Masonry after deception and quarried that marble by our northwest city. Shortly after that we met Sheelba. She's butthurt over our trading with cassiel; -4 demerit. There's an ocean separating us so she won't do anything about it.

I use our starting nightwatch as a missionary. For future spreading purposes, we can train scouts or something till one is born with CoE and give him mobility.

Later I hover over a border city and see this

DMI9-2-G.png

GEE, SURE IS PERPENTACH BEING OBVIOUS ABOUT HIS INTENTIONS AROUND HERE.

The last tech I research is the rather expensive Summoning tech. This unlocks the council of Esus hero, Gibbon Goetia, a summoner with a useless novelty ability. We want him for his summoning ability. I stop after researching it.

We got like 10 techs through trade this round, too many to count. Didn't even have to trade elementalism! I self researched deception, masonry, and summoning, as well as part of archery to make a trade deal possible. This deal got us Mahala's world map.

Perpentach's looking mean. My current tech choice is stirrups. I built quite a few troops, including horsemen; my thought was to give them their 6 strength upgrade. I'm cool if someone changes this though.

Gibbon is, I believe, queued up in Prespur behind a Moroi. If he is, let that go through. If not, put him there.

I have a Combat 3, Shock 1 Moroi going after a barb city to the west. I'm scared shitless of Perpentach; I dare not send many more troops.

Strategy discussion.

Perpentach will probably take the fight to us. We should be ready.

Once gibbon comes out give him the following promotions in this order.

Law 1, 2, 3
Extension 1
Mobility 1
Combat promotions

Law 3 lets him summon Einherjar. They have 10 strength, 2 move, and get 1 extra turn of life per unit killed in battle. Kick ass. These guys can hit the top of perpentach's stack and retreat. Then next turn 2 Einherjar can do that. Then 3, then 4, etc.

Do you like golden ages? Hell yeah you do. Here's how to get one. Turn the gold slider to 100%. Get like 500 gold. Use it all to buy slaves in one city. Have them rush the bone palace. Simple, yeah?

Really should do a military tech next. Stirrups is an option. Another is smelting -> iron working. We lack copper, so why not take a step up from it? Also feasible is code of laws -> feudalism. This gets us vampires. One of them can gift Vampirism to Gibbon, making his growth much much faster.

I'd go for stirrups and after that the path to Feudalism. Losha Valas is great to have, but I guess defense will be easier with those mobile horses right now...Oh, and great turnset, Monkeyfinger :goodjob: !

The Roster:

Imhotep >> ON DECK for unleashing Losha Valas the Great
Ozbenno -- feasted on barb blood
reverend_oats -- cutting his nails with scissors instead of an Axe Blade
Ralph Jackson -- burning jungle is better than burning sands
Monkeyfinger >> JUST PLAYED the Vampire Trade Whore
Madtown >> UP NOW probably getting an invite to a clown's show

BTW I lost the axe 1S of Acheron's city, iirc.
I vote we head toward vampires.

I get this error when trying to load the save.

DMIIXerror.jpg

I had game freeze issues during my last turnset, so I did a reinstall of CIV, BTS, and 2030k. I've double checked my work and all appears to be correct. Anyone have any ideas? Does the save load for others?

Edit: Got it, problem solved. I had forgotten to update BTS to 3.13 :hammer2:

So, I agree that perpentach is gonna attack us. We have 3 choices for military.

Stirrups for HA's

Smelting --> IW for iron weapons.

CoL --> Feudalism for vamps.

Sadly, I would be surprised if we can tech any of them before he DoW's. Hopefully I can hold him off with Gibbon summons, because I don't think the troops in Nubia are enough to hold off his stack. Gibbon will take 12 turns in Prespur, so i may have to slave rush him instead of BP in a pinch (is ist possible to rush a unit?). The problem is that if I turn down the science slider to build gold, then we tech the military techs even slower. So, do I amass gold for BP rush or Gibbon if needed, or do I keep science up to tech whichever military tech we decide on faster?

Speaking of slave rushing, I've never used CoE as a main religion. How does one buy slaves?

To buy a slave, you click on a unit in a city. He'll have the "buy slave" spell, which costs 10 gold. Use it to get a slave. This can be done unlimited times per round. Slaves have the same rush command as great engineers, only with 1/40th the effectiveness.

Units cannot be rushed by Council of Esus slaves. They can be rushed by conventional whipping, which we also can currently do. As far below happy cap is prespur is, you could probably get away with rushing gibbon by whipping the mine workers, and regrowing quickly. Be sure to give him at least 1 turn of conventional hammers though, because whipped citizens contribute less hammers to things which have no progress yet.

I hate to do this, but I'm going to have to withdraw from this SG. My game still freezes at random moments, and it makes it too frustrating for me to try to play through. I had hoped that the reinstall would fix the issue, but I guess not. I've never had this much trouble running FFH, only the occasional crash with known bugs. What makes this symptom even more aggravating is that it freezes my whole comp requiring a reset to break.

My apologies to the team. Perhaps I can join you for a different adventure in the future.

Good luck with the mad clown, I'll still be lurking.

Sorry to hear this Madtown, but it can't be helped if you have such nasty problems with the game. Thanks for joining anyway :) ! Guess we need a replacement player then. I'm up, but won't be able to play until Tuesday. If anyone can play before that, feel free to do so and post a got it.

Hi folks and friends
I'll report the ends
not of this game
but of a set really lame.

We expect a broohah
so we need Mr. Goetia
and as is our habit
we whip 'em to grab it.

99721121ir9.jpg

I made this crazy song
like the clown, he is strong
and now even stronger
as Rosier is away no longer.

65806810bg3.jpg

The Council was great fun
as by us alone it is run
we selected this one
and went back to the fun.

91335934gy0.jpg

Look at this crack
he's really whack
he'll open the fray
while having a GA.

17709008ok9.jpg

We were aware
that he would declare
the air now grows thin
who will win ?

47239318pt6.jpg

It's first blood to us
as the Clown gets nuts
and kills his hero
with chances like zero.

49193295ou8.jpg

Mahala comes with an offer
he has sheep in his coffer
but we sent him away
sheep's no use in this fray.

11091912ti0.jpg

And we captured a city
but it's a real pity
it's barb land we claim
yeah, that's really lame.

99369945at4.jpg

The first waive is done
the Clown had much fun
he sent a reminder
we're like corn in the grinder.

68257385fi5.jpg

He took our city
shame and pity
strong units we lack
but we'll still fight back.

OOC stuff:

There was nothing I could do about it. Our summoned hosts of Einjehar did kill units of course, but he was bringing well promoted units and lots of them, including Cats. These 40% cultural bonus don't help really if you got only unpromoted cannon fodder. I've selected the way to Feudalism and Vampires next, no beakers invested yet. For some reason we no longer can build horse units - it says we needs nightmares now (WTH ?). Gibbon's summoning may hold back the tide for a while, but I'm really pessimistic now...
