I quiet turnset for me, which is odd considering this is an AW game ...
Anyway, Civil Service came in and I switched to Bureaucracy
Metal Casting came in a few turns later
and Machinery will come in 2 turns.
Had a bad event at Madrid.
We've finished exploring that entire Northern island, so I've started ferrying the scout to the next island.
We can move all those swords sitting on their arses in Madrid to clean out that barb island. Even though this is AW, I think infrastructure is important to keep generating enough income to settle enough to win by domination. Or we have to find the other 3 civ and take them out completely. What do y'all think? Domination or conquest?
We will have to find the fair lady Shez first before we win ... "else all is doomed". We can move some forces in Madrid to clear the barb ... provided it does not affect the happiness of Madrid.
We're a bit worker shy and we have a happiness resource begging to be hooked up so I build more workers.
Machinery in. I'm tempted by Philosophy as Taoism hasn't been founded but more tempted by Engineering.
Pop a GS, Alphabet he will bulb Leave him be.
We're also not in slavery I don't change this.
Engineering in, I pick Alphabet (just to get it out of the way so we can bulb something else ). No beakers invested so can change (maybe Drama for an extra happy with the now-hooked up dye).
Otherwise we should start settling north in desert land and take over a few of the barb cities.
I have some troops on their way to another unexplored region.
We are not in slavery caused someone thinks that having Merchant specialist is necessary. Personally, I don't think so, since we are not in representation, and merchant can't do trade mission here. Rather grow and work on cottages.
Who's turn to tell a story to save the poor virgin lass? Well, let's have a updated roster, shall we?

Very strange decisions you'd made, perhaps you'd like to share with your strategy.
Firstly, why lightbulb Philo? Usually we lightbulb it for 3 reasons: (1) Taoism, (2) Pacifism, and (3) Lib Race. However, here, (1) Taoism is already founded, (2) we may have gotten to Shwedagon wonder thereby not needing Philo for Pacifism, and (3) you then decided to go for Nat and not the Lib Race path.
Secondly, why Pacifism? We have pitiful number of specialists. Isn't OR or theocracy more useful?
Thirdly, why do we want to draft? We do not have lots of food ... as far as I see, we have more hammer than food in most cities.
Haven't checked the save but must agree with Mr Fox there.
Are we in Pacifism (isn't in report)? That would be bad, for the military upkeep alone. Organised Religion would be best I think. Ditto for drafting (being bad that is)
Are we in the race for Liberalism? If so, no problems with bulbing Philosophy but as mentioned we're now researching Nationalism??
Its best to produce full reports that contain reasons behind your decisions, rather than incomplete ones that leave us guessing.
I'll play & report tomorrow Anyway, as we're facing no real action right now (which was intended and is partly due to the map) I suggest we're playing 15 to 20 turns from now on, until the heat finally arrives...
ah. good point about pacifism, i forgot we had the shwedagon paya in a couple of turns. my bad there. i switched primarily for lower upkeep, i think. sorry
however, i think i can defend philo better. i wanted nationalism, it is an important military tech (not only for drafting but also for military tradition etc.)
also, i weighed up the other options for the scientist. i don't think that the academy or settled would be as beneficial. that was a tough call, maybe i made the wrong one. i guess that's for you to decide.
I played 20 turns. A pretty successful turnset with some action if I may be so bold. Proof:
Battle Stats: Units victorious while attacking : 18 Units victorious while defending : 13 Units defeated while attacking : 2 Units defeated while defending : 1
But one thing after another...
First of all I switched civics: I switched to Free Religion (out of Pacifism) and to Slavery (out of Caste System). The reasoning behind it: Pacifism did cost us a whole bunch of money (~10 gpt) due to unit costs. FR gives us some happiness and moreover +10% research. Slavery was taken as it didn't cost us another turn of Anarchy and Caste system is utterly useless right now - we have no cities capable of running lots of Specialists, and in any case this is not attractive without Representation anyway. As for research I switched immediately to Paper as I saw that the others are getting closer to it as well. Better doing things full-heartedly than halfway !
Spies from Zara are pretty annoying at the moment. In regard to that I constructed some Castles for notching up our overall EP output and built a Spy at Madrid.
I then decided to settle the Merchant at our future Wall Street city Madrid. I saw no point in withholding him (we won't build Sid's Sushi or Cereal Mills on this map).
Zara decided to give this another go. I saw his stack early enough and placed some counter in the jungle.
We lost one unit each and he then retreated cowardly to the jungle again. Later he came back and had added 5 Cats to his stack, but managed to loose all his units as they got cut down in the woods .
Meanwhile there was barb business on the other continent:
I kept the city as it will pay for itself even without a Courthouse immediately (whip the Courthouse once it's possible nonetheless !)
We got another GG through Zara's first attempt. I decided to finally get a unit with Level 6 for the HE. I then saw we lack Polytheism (sic!) and therefore Literature in 1600 AD. Cool.
The only weed move of my turnset was probably this one:
Could have whipped it for 4 pop earlier but decided that it was safe *sigh*. well, Notre Dame isn't that game breaking fortunately.
We hit the Renaissance with the discovery of Education !
We got another GS. I settled him in our future Oxford City.
More barb action on the other side of the Great River:
Liberalism should be pretty safe:
I sneaked Polytheism and Literature in (both 1 turns), the next player can then build the HE at Edirne (which currently already has an Instructor). Our cities can grow a bit now, espacially Edirne has some room under the happy cap left. I was on the way of assembling a pay back bill party for Zara, I guess it's about time we take the war to him and cripple him severely. Just add some Maces and Trebs to the stack and get some units for border defense, and then visit him !
Imhotep
