Personaly I belive in retaliation only revenge just doesn't feel right but I'm no pacifist either.

Retaliation is an immediate counter attack after a wrong is done to you.
Example the US invasion of Afghanistan or WW2.

Revenge is hurting your enemy just to hurt them and avenge the pain they caused you.
An exaple would be torturing someone without actualy asking any questions.

Poll coming...

I think that both retaliation and revenge skip the rational phase and are emotional at best, instinctive at worst, responses.

Hitting back because you've been hit, without asking why you've been hit, or if you've really been it, will very often turn more disastrous.

That does not mean you should never hit, it means you should never hit without thinking long and hard first.

I support just punishment and information.

As long as retaliation is preventive of any further attack, I do not see any problem with it. Revenge only leeds to more revenge.

I don't support revenge or retribution for their own sake, but I do support self-defense; i.e. hurting/disabling someone until they stop hurting you. Then logic and maybe diplomacy can kick in. The other two are, as others have said, purely emotional and/or impulsive.

I believe in love, friendship, happiness, and sunshine! :)

But what if that first attack was preventive?
And can you retaliate to a preventive retaliation?

I don't support an eye for an eye. I am in favor of two eyes for an eye.

So retaliation? Or are you going to spend the next twenty years plotting the ridding of his eyes:crazyeye:

what do you mean by believe in them? it's quite obvious both things exist and are used...

if you mean have i done either, then the answer is yes. I'm not going to stand there and ask poliely why someone is trying to beat me I like most people will react and attack back.

In that case I wouldn't support retaliation ofcause.

I don't really see how retaliation and revenge are different...

Unless revenge is more emotionally charged while retaliation is the same thing done with a cooler head...

In which case revenge is more mature.

I'm not sure how that follows, did you mistype that?
