Hi, just wondering if the people here in the OT believe that we are alone in the universe or that there could be other life forms out there.

I personally believe in this ever-expanding universe that there is no way we could be alone. There has to be life out there besides us (it doesn't even have to intelligent just proof of other species in the universe).

Human arrogance alone can account for any belief that out of the entire universe, God chose earth alone to populate with sentient life.

That's exacly what I was thinking. To belive that only one planet in an entire universe has life would be dumb.

I doubt that there is life in the universe outside of earth, especially intelligent life. (Why would God put intelligent life on some other planet when he didn't put any here? :p ) I think God certainly could have created more life if he wanted to - but just because it could exist isn't reason for me to believe that it does.

I'll wait until ET comes knocking before I believe.

That same argument can be said for why people question the existence of a god.

God is alone. [/Birdjaguar] Or God alone is or something like that :S I should just leave it to Birdjaguar himself...

Anyway I find it hard to believe that there aren't other lifeforms out there.

When ET comes knocking along with ~5000 of his little buddies with ray guns and other "evil world domination type stuff" I will make sure to point them in your direction:p.

I never believed we are alone, and now I believe that many races begin and all destroy themselves within a few hundred/thousand years after the nuke/science age.

This seems to me the most likely theory to explain why noone seems to be signaling anything.

Thus, there was other life and there will be other life, but probably not now...
(and I know "now" is auckward for communication, so :p )

:hmm: Maybe they just don't like us:rolleyes:!

What person said they have been abducted:eek::lol:!?!

Somewhere out there, there is probably other living creatures.

Giant space beavers abducted me and implanted a mind control chip in my brain, in order to help them conquer Earth when their intergalactic invasion fleet arrives in a few years...I mean, not me. :mischief:

But really, I didn't actually vote for that

On the issue of life in general: I definitity think there is other lifeforms in the universe. Scientists are current exploring Mars, Europa and Titan for extraterrestrial microbial life. Considering that it is only our solar system, I gather the chances of life forming are good.

On the issue of intelligent life: I am more skeptical about its prospects. It took about 3.8 billion years since the formation of water for intelligent life to evolve, but only 0.300 to 1 billion years for simple microscopic life to form. Such would indicate that it takes a greater amount time for intelligence to evolve, which would limit the number of civilization that form.

However, unless the odds for the development of life and intelligence are very small, the massive number of solar systems could make life a very frequent phenomenon in the universe. Also, we don't life is limited to just our aqueous carbon-based biochemistry, if other biochemistries are possible.

BTW, I just finished reading a book on the subject: Lonely Planets : The Natural Philosophy of Alien Life. It is a good book, if you ignore the bad jokes and tedious pop culture references.

Of course there's life elsewhere in the universe.

Of course there are aliens. Look at the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Each speck is a galaxy. Now do you believe?
