Lol, first, nail eating is a anxiety symptom, i know, i bite mine since 38 year.
And no , it is not anti-hygienic, in fact, you got your immune system boosted over time, because you innoculate yourself with everysingle bacteria/virus that go around.
I am very rarely sick, i dont recall last time i got flue, or a gastro-intestinal disease, ect...my immunity is top shape, no allergy as well.
So it is mainly a anxiety problem, and if i try to use benzodiazepine ( like valium) then it have a negative effect on my memory. So i prefer to live aanxious but with a wonderfull photogenic memory.
I have a lot of problems with insomnia. Nail biting helps me clear my mind so I can fall asleep. The downside is I often bite too far and it is painful.
I did for over 35 yrs , but in the last couple of years have been able
to MOSTLY quit . My 13 yr old daughter has the problem now . She
plays middle school sports year-round and this sometimes makes her fingers
hurt. We recently bought her fake nails (short ones) and it has helped her
alot though she still messes with them. Maybe she can quit too, I surely
know how difficult it is .
I do it occasionally; in later years often deliberately because my nails* are too long and I don't have scissors around. I associate it more with boredom than with anxiety.
* My nails are about the only part of my anatomy that gets described as "feminine". I think this is amusing, cause they're big, hard and sharp** - hardly the properties we normally associate with femininity.
** I've unintentionally drawn blood, mine and others', with them.
I'm not a biter..I am an eater...my nails are an extra source of nourishment for my body and I am too weak willed to stop!!!! No amount of scolding, cajoling, beating, is ever going to get me stop my habit...
My toenails are tempting, but I think I'll get a hernia if I try to chew on them
A bad habit of mine, I admit. It's never something one does consciously, but rather some nonsensical semiautomatic subroutine kicking in when one is otherwise distracted but not using either hands or mouth. Unfortunately, it's a habit which doesn't quite stop at the fingernails. An examination of my hands would reveal irregularly textured skin on each fingertip around the nail, and some interesting callouses on each knuckle of both little fingers and on both thumbs. Given the context, no prizes for guessing the cause.
