I'm wondering if you guys still find games like Age of Empires .. a challenge in the strategy and tactical sense?

Playing online is definitely a challenge, but you cab usually find ways to win over the bots quite easily with some practice and knowledge.

I find the AI in AoE2 to be fairly challenging, such that it makes the game more fun. The AoE3 AI, on the other hand, I find to be pretty poor - I almost always win on Hard (whereas in AoE2, Moderate is a good challenge), and only Very Hard consistently beats me - IIRC the only difference from Hard is that the AI gets a 100% production bonus, so it doesn't feel like the AI has actually earned its victory.

For multiplayer, it is too much of a clickfest for me. I only ever played AoE3 online, and while it was fun at first, it became increasingly boring as time went on, and I don't think that I've played a single game of it in the past year.

OMG I used to play AOE2 all the time. Then I moved onto Civ IV and then I moved onto Crusader Kings.

I found that in AoE3, terrain, or the map in general, had much less importance, which brought the game down for me. What I mean is that I found myself building stuff pretty much wherever my cursor fell upon, and all I did was produce huge mass of units to send them across the map. There was a constant stream of units walking across the map, from all directions. I dunno... It didn't feel exactly like that in AoE2.

AoE 2 was so hard! I still have memories of playing Arabia, 8 players, teams of 2, and taking a good 3-4 hours to win it all.

I enjoyed Iberia myself. :D

But yeah the games still are a fun challenge in my opinion.

The thing with AoE2 was that it was fairly formulaic, in that once you had a winning strategy it'd work almost every time if you pulled it off correctly.

AoE 1&2 were hard. :(
I had to cheat to pass several missions.

Great games nonetheless.

I remember playing the Genghis Khan mission involving Persia and failing completely to beat them because of their massed elephant tactics. So what I did was make a massive army of horse archers (the UU of the Mongols) and just picking off all of their settlers until they had no more resources with which to make Elephants. After that, victory was a breeze :D

@Own Glyndwr: I found that one is the easiest mission in the Genghis Khan campaign. I used a combination of horse archer and pikes.

For the most of the part I found the game to be a fun challenge. I never like the French campaign I not sure why. It could be that I hate Frank civilization or I do not found any thing Interesting about the campaign. Or it could be a combination of both.

I had a lot of fun with the scenario maker in AoE1 back in the day :)
It was still harder than heck, RTS's just aren't that easy for me. I had to use cheats to keep up a lot of the time.

I have always liked RTSes better than shooters and platformers, and I still play AOE2 from time to time. I recently picked up a copy of age of mythologies from half price books, of all places. Too bad ensomble studios is no more
