Do you have the impression that you always get the same leaders as AI opponents in your games ?

I had that feeling. Into my 6th full game, I'm already feeling like I always get the same ones.

So I reloaded all my games to check. Turns out I was wrong. Thought I'd let you peeps know about it. It's probably a reflection of not enough leaders in the game yet.

FWIW, here's the breakdown from my 6 games (5 standard map and one small):

- Leaders I got 3 times: Ashoka World renouncer, Ibn Battuta
- Leaders I got 2 times: Himiko HS, Trung Trac, Augustus, Harriet Tubman, Amina, Hatshepsut, Napoleon Emperor, Pacachuti, Xerxes achemenid
- Leaders I got 0 times: Friedrich Baroque and Tecumseh

All the others I got 1 time

I myself played Isabella, Augustus, Ben, Xerxes KOK, Confuscius and now playing Hapshepsut for a wonders games

Seems like sometimes a 'feeling' is not always automatically confirmed upon deeper checking

I‘ve yet to see some leaders, and I‘ve played quite a few games. Tubman? Appears almost every game! Battuta and Isabella? Haven‘t met them. KoK Xerxes? At least 4 times. Achaemenid Xerxes? Never.

Randomness feels strange to humans.

There are only 19 base leaders in a game with up to 8 players. And since there are only 10 Antiquity civilizations, those leaders that are strongly associated with those civs are going to appear more often. So yeah... you're going to see some of the same leaders (like Ashoka) every game.

Yes, and every time I get either Napoleon or Harriet Tubman I roll my eyes and groan knowing that there is an inevitable war in my future.

(Same applies to Xerxes King of Kings and Amina, though I've gotten lucky and haven't seem them in as many of my games)

Lucky you...

Spoiler Meanwhile in my current deity game... concurrent invasions :crazyeye: :

My distribution across 7 games is less even, but probably still within the realms of normal distribution.

Harriet was in 5 out of 7 (and usually menace)
Confucius in 4 out of 6 (as I played one as him)
Pacachuti was 4 out of 7 (and usually declaring war in antiquity)
Amina and Friedrich, who I played, were both 3 out of 6

I'm yet to meet Hatshepsut

The rest is fairly evenly split between 1 and 2 games

As for personas, can anyone confirm they are in the leader pool? I've got Emperor Napoleon in my first two games, but I disabled him and only left Revolutionary on, since I prefer to see one of each leader on the selection screen, and the latter was never in, either.

I've seen a bunch of leaders in both personas already so that's fine, at least on my end.

I'm getting different opponents, but everyone seems to get their "historical" pairing even though I put everything on Random! I wish there were an option to get them to select their later Civs with strategy instead of "historical" pairings, but the Antiquity Civs should actually be random at least, if I select it!

I also had this feeling but with different leaders

Having almost the same leaders next to you twice in a row is weird. I suspected there was a bug where it used the same leaders than previous game

Maybe they should change the random to make it more likely for leaders less picked yet

I am so tired of seeing Freddy (Oblique) in every single game I play.

I really do not think that is worth development resources when there's actual gameplay and design to improve...

The one unnerving thing is that every time I transition into Exploration I get the - frankly quite boring - Normans as neighbors, and the first music that is played is their superannoying middleagy organ + flute track.

It's fine the first time, but it slowly drives me crazy if I'm subjected to it five times an hour. (In fact that's my only reason for temporarily turning the music off so far.)

I want to say I'm 3 games in (2 small, one standard), and just naming the leaders I distinctly recall, I think I've had Himiko in all 3 (I don't remember which variation), Machiavelli in at least 2, Frederick (some variation) in at least 2, Hatshepsut in 2. I think those are the only ones I distinctly remember having in multiple games. It's certainly possible that like Ibn was a distant lands leader in my first game and I didn't pay attention.

Feels like a fairly standard random distribution. Especially since some of the leaders I remember more are ones with personas, my guess is that they pick evenly from the full pool, they don't like pick evenly from the leaders and then do a fifty-fifty on the personas.

I was seeing Isabella a lot. I was happy my last game I finally got Hatsephut instead of Isabella.

Xerxes and Napoleon I feel I always encounter, and I've seen Napoleon as the Maya specifically a few times which is peculiar.

Unrelated to that fact, I wish we could select how the AI picks civs as historical pairings are getting very repetitive/predictable. At least the global leader distribution is eurocentric enough there's always a couple that are forced to be really unusual - but conversely you're never gonna end up with a non-european leading the normans! I'd enjoy if there were strategic (by which I mean ai leaders picking civs based on matching attributes) and true random ones as well.

I finally had Tubman on my...7th? Game.

Human brains evolved to find patterns even where they don't exist. So, yeah, most people are going to "feel" that they are seeing repeats.

There are 21 leaders and 5 alternate personas. More leaders than in Civ 4/5/6 at launch.
