Do you honestly think there will be an expansion pack?

I think there will be an expansion. Whether or not it includes existing DLC is anyone's guess. I wouldn't be surprised either way.

No matter what, everything on Steam goes down in price eventually. There will be a better deal for those who wait (the only question is how long). Civ V has been on sale a few times already.

I got Civ 5 for something dumb across the Christmas/New Year price slash Steam always has.

I'd say a mix of 1 and 2. If you bought BTS, if you didn't have Warlords, you got Wang Kon the leader and the gameplay features (vassal states, I believe). I voted 2, but I suspect that some of the things from DLC (possibly leaders and and gameplay features) will show up in the expansion.

Also, 1/2 vs 3/4... Couldn't the expansion pack BE download only, making the either/or divide a bit pointless?

I voted for the last option, but given the choice I would have voted for "I suspect Civ5 is just about dead."

The announcement of the GotY edition with the complete (current) DLC leads me to suspect that the GotY will be the "Complete" edition.

You mean, despite the precedent of them releasing a GOTY edition for a past Civ game prior to any expansion, and then proceeding to release two expansions after that?

In other franchises, GOTY usually means 'okay we're done, here's all the DLC to make things easier for people to find down the road' - Fallout 3, and Borderlands (which is 2K as well) did this, to name a few.

Personally, I feel it's pretty obvious that Civ 5 isn't done just yet, but I can see where the notion comes from.

I dont like DLCs too.

I think they are contributing for the games becoming more "dry".

For example, I cant see a reason why spain and the mongols arent present on vanilla other than the thought of "this civs would sell well on DLCs".

Almost everygame released on the last 2 years gives me this impression.

I hope that this extra money, or part of it, go towards a good expansion. im pretty sure CiV will have at least one and I dont think will bring the dlcs.

they probably just wanted to try out some other civilizations first, like siam. that and mongolia was free anyway.

My bad, did not remember that.

but you get my point. I think DLCs are bad for the players, because some things are kept out of the game to be selled later. things that used to be part of the games. Maybe is because of this that now we classify most of the games as "shallow".

That because there weren't expansion packs for FPS in the last 5 years? Sports and Rancing games usually don't get expansions either.

I know many RPG and strategy games that did (or will) get an expansion (e.g. Dragon Age, StarCraft 2).

That's my point DLC is the norm these days and expansions are the exception unless you count The Sims ;)

If DLCs are developed after the fact, then sold as bite-sized expansions i.e. you're paying for additional development costs past the main game, then that's 'fine'*. Borderlands did this well. Fallout 3 did this well. However, the problem is that in general they're so small in comparison, in terms of development cycle and transaction that it's much easier to 'cheat', and poop hits the ceiling when you get cases like Mafia 2 where the DLC already exists on the DVDs, and are unlocked later for an extra fee. That's just plain dirty.

*By "fine" I actually am being the devil's advocate here. Bite-sized content updates really just are inferior for the community in the long run. Anywhere from running contests/HoF-type things to plain finding other people to play with, anything that requires a standard content set benefits from bigger packs than having to keep track of 5 different little DLCs which each party may or may not have.

If you play WoW or are familiar with the raid/dungeon model there (or at least have some idea of what it's like, which is pretty hard not to in this day and age :P) imagine if a bunch of dungeons were DLC and you were trying to put together raids - imagine trying to keep track of which people had access to which dungeons.

Yeah.

I hate DLC

DLCs could be very cool if they did them right. The way they are done it makes it seem like they are just money grabs, the DLCs are providing content that largely should have been there to begin with.

Now I don't play CoD anymore, but if BC2 had DLC map packs like that I'd be all over it. If they kept offering new, fresh content with a DLC for $5-9 I'd be all over that too. I would have killed for that stuff back in the day PC gaming was flying.

They probably saw how much money games like COD or Halo make off DLC. Its a gold mine, and thats why everyone does it. I'm totally ok with DLC civs, and it doesn't matter to me if someone doesn't want to buy them since I don't play multi-player. The only thing I don't like about it is the price point, I think $5 a civ is way too much. Considering I paid $1 for Tiny wings and I've played that for endless hours, I don't think I can justify that much for a civ, especially since someone can just mod one exactly the same.

The reason I started this thread though was because I was thinking of buying some DLC but didn't want to buy it and then rebuy it again in the expansion pack.

does anybody who's been suing the internet for more than 3 months actually use the term "noob" anymore?

I didn't realize the internet was an entity that you could sue.

I voted 2 btw. That will make them the most money in all likelihood.
